CHAP 12 — CARMINE COMES HOME

Carmine went public.
He appeared at a private investment conference in Manhattan under his own name.
The city exploded.
A Costa believed dead for fifteen years had returned.
He gave one statement.
“My nephew has lost control of the family businesses.”
Vincent watched it from Mave’s office.
Mave had taken over the conference room next to his.
Technically, as the Vale beneficiary, she now had authority over thirty-one percent of Costa Maritime.
The office staff had begun calling her Ms. Vale.
She hated it.
“Turn that off,” she said.
Vincent did.
“What’s he doing?”
“Making himself respectable.”
“Can he?”
“With enough money, people become surprisingly flexible about memory.”
Carmine filed lawsuits challenging the Vale trust.
He claimed Marcus had voluntarily surrendered his shares.
He challenged Alessandro’s restoration.
He froze several corporate accounts.
Then he attacked Mave publicly.
Newspapers printed photographs of her carrying coffee into Vincent’s office.
HEAD OF COSTA EMPIRE GIVES BILLIONS TO SECRETARY.
Mave stared at the headline.
Leo leaned over.
“You look good.”
She glared.
“Not helping.”
Vincent was furious.
Mave was not.
“This is useful.”
“How?”
“He thinks humiliation works.”
Vincent understood.
“Like he thought your father was only an accountant.”
“Exactly.”
She called a press conference.
Vincent objected.
She ignored him.
Cameras filled the lobby.
Mave stepped to the microphone.
“My name is Maeve Elena Vale.”
The room quieted.
“For three years, I worked as Vincent Costa’s executive secretary.”
Cameras flashed.
“I scheduled meetings, reviewed logistics, balanced corporate accounts, negotiated vendor conflicts, identified regulatory risks, and fixed mistakes made by men earning ten times my salary.”
A few reporters smiled.
“I am proud of that work.”
Vincent watched from the back.
Mave continued.
“My father, Marcus Vale, co-founded Costa Maritime.”
She presented the original charter.
“For seventeen years, his ownership was concealed.”
Then she presented Alessandro’s trust.
“I am not being given billions because I worked for Vincent Costa.”
Her voice sharpened.
“I am reclaiming an asset that belonged to my father.”
The clip went viral.
Public opinion shifted.
Carmine had underestimated the optics.
Again.
Then he retaliated where cameras could not help.
Costa Maritime lost insurance coverage on six vessels.
Two unions threatened stoppages.
A port authority opened a surprise investigation.
Mave saw the pattern.
“Someone is coordinating them.”
Vincent nodded.
“Carmine.”
“No.”
She studied the timing.
“He’s not this organized.”
Vincent almost laughed.
“You’ve met him once.”
“And I’ve reviewed fifteen years of his transactions.”
She pointed at the screen.
“This is Donovan’s work.”
Silence.
Donovan had vanished after Pier Seventeen.
Vincent had believed he was hiding.
Mave knew better.
“He isn’t working for Carmine.”
“Then who?”
Mave looked at an old payment record.
A new shell company had appeared.
ROSS MERIDIAN PARTNERS.
She searched corporate filings.
One director.
A woman.
Thirty-one years old.
Sofia Ross.
Donovan’s daughter.
Mave stared.
“He found her.”
Vincent stepped closer.
“And?”
“She owns the company attacking us.”
The truth landed.
Donovan had not simply betrayed Vincent to save his daughter.
May you like
He had joined her.
And Sofia Ross had spent fifteen years learning how to destroy the Costa organization from the outside.
