CHAP 11 — AFTER THE FIRE

Carmine escaped Pier Seventeen.

Barely.

Three of his men were arrested.

Elena was free.

But victory felt strangely quiet.

Mave sat beside her mother in a private hospital room.

Neither knew how to begin.

Six years of presumed death stood between them.

Elena finally said:

“You cut your hair.”

Mave laughed through tears.

“You missed a few things.”

“I know.”

“Why didn’t you find me?”

“I tried.”

“Not hard enough.”

Elena accepted the blow.

“You’re right.”

Mave looked away.

“I am so tired of everyone saying they left me to protect me.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

Elena’s voice softened.

“I was your mother every day I was away.”

Mave’s eyes filled.

“That doesn’t make you present.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then Elena said:

“Vincent?”

Mave looked toward her.

“What about him?”

“You love him.”

Mave nearly choked.

“You’ve been free twelve hours and we’re discussing my romantic life?”

“You make the same face I did around your father.”

“I do not.”

“You absolutely do.”

Despite herself, Mave smiled.

Then it faded.

“I don’t know if I trust him.”

“Good.”

Mave frowned.

Elena continued.

“Love without questions is worship. You should never worship a Costa.”

Mave laughed.

Outside the room, Vincent heard enough to understand he was not invited into that conversation.

He left.

At Costa headquarters, the crisis deepened.

Carmine had disappeared.

Half the old captains wanted Vincent to retaliate.

The other half were considering Carmine’s offer.

Vincent sat at the head of the table.

For years, he had maintained the organization through fear and precision.

Now he saw something he had resisted.

His father’s system was dying.

Maybe it deserved to.

Leo asked:

“What’s the move?”

Vincent looked at the men around him.

“We divide the legitimate businesses from the syndicate.”

Silence.

One captain laughed.

“You’re joking.”

“No.”

“We built this city.”

“No.”

Vincent leaned back.

“We built a machine that keeps producing enemies for our children.”

Nobody moved.

“You want to go clean?”

“I want to stop pretending criminal power is inheritance.”

A man named Rocco stood.

“Your father would spit on this table.”

Vincent looked at him.

“My father spent his last years trying to repair what his brother destroyed.”

Rocco scoffed.

Vincent’s eyes hardened.

“And if you want Carmine, go.”

Three men left.

Vincent did not stop them.

Leo watched.

“That hurt.”

“Yes.”

“You sure?”

“No.”

Leo smiled.

“Good. I worry when you’re sure.”

That evening, Vincent returned to the hospital.

Mave was alone.

He stood in the doorway.

“Can I come in?”

She noticed the difference immediately.

He asked.

“Yeah.”

Vincent entered.

She looked at his face.

“You lost people.”

“Three captains.”

“Because of me?”

“Because I stopped lying to myself.”

Mave studied him.

“What happens now?”

“Carmine comes for the company.”

“And us?”

Vincent looked at her.

“I’m done deciding for you.”

“That doesn’t answer the question.”

He stepped closer.

“What do you want?”

Mave considered.

“Truth.”

“Done.”

“Even when it makes you look bad.”

“That seems unfair.”

She raised an eyebrow.

Vincent sighed.

“Done.”

“And no more surveillance files.”

“Done.”

“And stop having boutiques secretly store my measurements.”

A pause.

“I can explain that.”

“Vincent.”

“Done.”

Mave smiled.

He reached for her hand.

Stopped before touching it.

She noticed.

Then placed her hand in his.

Small movement.

Huge difference.

May you like

Neither needed to say it.

They were starting again.
