CHAPTER 8 THE SOLDIER WHO DISAPPEARED

"Daniel is already dead."
The words stayed in Amelia's mind.
She stared at her mother.
"No."
Sarah's fingers tightened around her wrist.
"You don't understand."
"I understand enough."
"Amelia—"
"You said he was protecting me."
"He was."
"You said he knew they would come."
"He did."
"Then why would he walk into a trap?"
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
"Because that's what Daniel always does."
A voice echoed from the corridor.
"Your mother is right."
Amelia turned.
A man's silhouette stood beneath the red emergency light.
Tall.
Straight-backed.
Perfectly still.
He stepped forward.
An elderly man appeared in the doorway.
Silver hair.
Sharp gray eyes.
A dark military coat.
No weapon visible.
But the confidence in his posture made Amelia immediately understand something.
He didn't need one.
Sarah whispered:
"Edward."
The old man smiled.
"Sarah."
Amelia raised her weapon.
"Stay where you are."
Edward looked at the gun.
Then at Amelia.
For a moment, his expression softened.
"You have your father's eyes."
Amelia's jaw tightened.
"Don't talk about my father."
"Why?"
"Because you don't deserve to."
Edward's smile disappeared.
"Thomas always did have a talent for turning his children against me."
"He was my father."
"Biologically?"
Amelia's hand tightened around the weapon.
Edward smiled again.
"Interesting."
Sarah stepped between them.
"Don't."
Edward looked at her.
"You disappeared for twenty-nine years."
"To protect her."
"You failed."
"No."
Sarah looked at Amelia.
"She's still alive."
Edward sighed.
"Alive isn't the same as safe."
The computer beeped.
14:32
Edward looked toward the screen.
"Ah."
His eyes narrowed.
"She opened it."
Richard raised his weapon.
"Don't come any closer."
Edward looked at him.
"Colonel Mason."
Richard froze.
"You know me."
"I know everyone who served under my command."
"That was thirty years ago."
"People like us don't forget."
Edward's gaze returned to Amelia.
"Especially when they become inconvenient."
Richard's finger tightened around the trigger.
"You ordered Thomas killed."
Edward's expression remained calm.
"Thomas made his choice."
"He refused your orders."
"Repeatedly."
"So you killed him."
Edward shook his head.
"I gave him an opportunity."
"What opportunity?"
"To surrender the archive."
"And when he refused?"
"Thomas was stubborn."
Amelia stepped forward.
"Did you kill my father?"
Edward looked directly at her.
"No."
Her eyes narrowed.
"You're lying."
"I didn't kill Thomas."
"Then who did?"
Edward said nothing.
Amelia took another step.
"Who?"
A faint smile appeared.
"You're asking the wrong question."
"What question should I ask?"
"Why did Thomas know he was going to die?"
Silence.
Amelia's heart sank.
"What?"
Edward continued.
"Your father knew his death was coming."
"He told me nothing."
"Of course."
"Why?"
"Because he wanted you to believe he was helpless."
Richard frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Edward looked at him.
"Thomas wasn't helpless."
He reached into his coat.
Amelia raised her weapon.
Edward slowly removed a small photograph.
He held it up.
Amelia recognized it immediately.
Her father's funeral.
But this photograph was different.
It showed Thomas three days before his death.
Walking alone.
Entering a building.
The building was unfamiliar.
Edward handed the photograph to Amelia.
"Your father went there the night before he died."
"Where?"
"An old military communications center."
"Why?"
"He was meeting someone."
"Who?"
Edward smiled.
"Daniel Cross."
Amelia stared at him.
"Daniel was alive?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"The night before Thomas died."
Richard stepped forward.
"You're lying."
Edward looked at him.
"Am I?"
He pulled another photograph from his pocket.
Thomas.
Daniel.
Standing together.
Alive.
Three days before the funeral.
Amelia's entire body went cold.
"Why didn't Daniel tell me?"
"Because he couldn't."
"Where is he?"
Edward's eyes moved toward Sarah.
"Ask your mother."
Amelia turned.
"Mom?"
Sarah looked down.
"Daniel was captured."
"When?"
"Last night."
Amelia's face changed.
"Before we escaped?"
Sarah nodded.
"He stayed behind so we could get away."
Richard cursed under his breath.
"Then he's alive."
Edward shook his head.
"Not for long."
Amelia raised her weapon again.
"Where is he?"
Edward smiled.
"Do you really think I'd tell you?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you came here for me."
Edward's expression changed.
Amelia continued.
"You need me."
Silence.
"You need my identity to open the archive."
Richard looked at her.
Edward said nothing.
Amelia understood.
"That's why you didn't kill me."
Edward slowly smiled.
"Thomas taught you well."
"Did he?"
"He taught you to question authority."
"He taught me to recognize predators."
Edward's eyes hardened.
"Careful."
"You've been hunting my family for thirty years."
"No."
He stepped forward.
"I've been protecting something."
"What?"
"The country."
Amelia laughed bitterly.
"By killing families?"
"By controlling information."
"That's not protection."
"Sometimes it is."
Edward's voice became cold.
"You were too young to understand."
"And now?"
"Now you're old enough to be dangerous."
The computer beeped.
12:07
Edward looked toward it.
"We're running out of time."
Richard glanced at Amelia.
"What happens at zero?"
Edward answered.
"The archive broadcasts."
"To whom?"
"Everyone."
Amelia frowned.
"That's what Alexander wanted."
"Alexander was a fool."
"Daniel?"
Edward's expression changed.
"Daniel made the same mistake."
"What mistake?"
"Believing truth automatically makes people free."
Edward looked at Amelia.
"It doesn't."
"Then what does?"
"Power."
He stepped closer.
"That's why your father died."
Amelia's voice trembled.
"My father died protecting me."
Edward shook his head.
"No."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"Thomas died protecting the archive."
Amelia froze.
Richard stared at Edward.
"You said he knew his death was coming."
"He did."
"Why?"
"Because he planned it."
"What?"
Edward reached into his coat.
He removed a small recording device.
Pressed play.
Thomas's voice filled the room.
"If Amelia is hearing this, then I failed."
Amelia's heart broke.
Her father's voice.
Alive.
Calm.
Familiar.
"If you're hearing this, Amelia, don't trust the man who claims he protected you."
Edward's eyes narrowed.
Thomas continued.
"That includes me."
Amelia stared.
"I lied to you."
Her father's voice cracked.
"I lied because the truth would have made you a target."
A pause.
"I need you to understand something."
"Being your father was never a lie."
Amelia's eyes filled.
"That part was real."
She closed her eyes.
Thomas continued.
"You were my daughter because I chose you."
"Not because of blood."
"Not because of law."
"Because you were mine."
Amelia covered her mouth.
Richard looked away.
The recording continued.
"If they ever tell you that Alexander was your father..."
A pause.
"...believe them."
Amelia opened her eyes.
"But don't let them tell you what that means."
Daniel's voice suddenly appeared in the recording.
"Thomas."
The recording shifted.
Thomas answered:
"She's not ready."
Daniel said:
"She may never be."
"Then we'll make sure she lives long enough to choose."
Silence.
Then Thomas said:
"That's the promise."
The recording ended.
Amelia stared at Edward.
"What happened after this?"
Edward answered quietly.
"Thomas betrayed me."
"He betrayed you?"
"He took the archive."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Amelia frowned.
"You just said he died protecting it."
"He did."
"Then why don't you have it?"
Edward smiled.
"Because Thomas hid it."
"Where?"
Edward looked at Amelia.
"You opened the door."
"What?"
"The archive is beneath this building."
Richard looked around.
"This is the archive?"
Edward nodded.
"The computer you're standing beside isn't the archive."
He pointed toward the floor.
"It's the lock."
Amelia looked down.
"The key is me."
"Yes."
"And the archive?"
"Below us."
The ground suddenly vibrated.
A low mechanical hum filled the basement.
The floor beneath Amelia began to split.
Richard grabbed Sarah.
"Back!"
A circular section of concrete lowered into the ground.
A staircase appeared.
At the bottom was a steel chamber.
Rows of servers.
Hard drives.
Old military records.
Photographs.
Boxes.
Documents.
Thousands of them.
Amelia stared.
"The archive."
Edward smiled.
"Finally."
Amelia descended the stairs.
Richard followed.
Sarah stayed close.
Edward remained above them.
The chamber was freezing.
Amelia walked slowly between the shelves.
Names covered the files.
Some were crossed out.
Some had photographs.
Some had only numbers.
She picked up one.
MERCER, SARAH
Another:
VALE, ALEXANDER
Another:
HAYES, THOMAS
Then—
HAYES, AMELIA
She stopped.
The file was thicker than all the others.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
The first page contained her photograph.
Taken the day she was born.
Beneath it:
SUBJECT 17-A
Then:
STATUS: ACTIVE
Then:
BIOLOGICAL LINEAGE: VALE / MERCER
Then:
PROTECTION STATUS: HAYES
Amelia looked at Sarah.
"What does this mean?"
Sarah whispered:
"Thomas became your protection identity."
Amelia turned the page.
There was another photograph.
Thomas holding her.
Then another.
Thomas teaching her to ride a bicycle.
Then another.
Her first military ceremony.
Every important moment of her life had been documented.
She turned another page.
A red stamp appeared:
DO NOT TERMINATE
Then:
SUBJECT MUST REMAIN ALIVE
Amelia stared.
"Why?"
Sarah shook her head.
"I don't know."
She turned the next page.
There was a handwritten note.
Thomas's handwriting.
She is not the key.
She is the witness.
Amelia's eyes widened.
"What?"
Richard stepped closer.
"Read it."
The next line said:
The archive doesn't need Amelia to open it.
It needs Amelia to verify what is inside.
Amelia's breath caught.
"Then why did they say I was the key?"
Richard looked at Edward above them.
"Because he wanted you to believe that."
Edward smiled.
Amelia suddenly understood.
The entire hunt had been a manipulation.
They didn't need her blood.
They needed her testimony.
Her identity would authenticate the archive.
But the evidence itself was already there.
Her existence proved the records had been altered.
Her mother's disappearance.
Alexander's false death.
Thomas's forged identity.
The seventeen families.
Everything was connected.
And then Amelia found something that made her blood run cold.
A final file.
PROJECT SEVENTEEN — DIRECTIVE 00
She opened it.
At the top was a signature.
GENERAL EDWARD HAYES
Amelia stared.
"This is yours."
Edward's smile disappeared.
"Close it."
"No."
"Amelia."
"No."
She turned the page.
There was an order.
Dated:
SEPTEMBER 17, 1997
TARGET: SARAH MERCER
TARGET: ALEXANDER VALE
CHILD: AMELIA
OBJECTIVE: SECURE CHILD ALIVE
Her hands shook.
"Why?"
Edward's voice became cold.
"Because your birth was never an accident."
Amelia looked up.
"What did you do?"
Edward didn't answer.
Sarah stepped forward.
"You don't have to tell her."
Edward looked at Sarah.
"You've spent twenty-nine years lying."
Sarah's voice was steady.
"Because you spent twenty-nine years hunting."
Edward stared at Amelia.
Then he finally spoke.
"The night you were born, we discovered the final bloodline had produced a viable descendant."
Amelia's face tightened.
"Me."
"Yes."
"Why did you want me?"
"Because Alexander had hidden the final authorization."
"Where?"
Edward smiled.
"Inside you."
Amelia froze.
"What?"
"Not in your blood."
He pointed toward the file.
"In your identity."
"The authorization was encoded into your original birth record."
Amelia stared.
"So the birth certificate..."
"Was the final piece."
Richard whispered:
"They needed the original document."
Edward nodded.
"Exactly."
Amelia remembered the stolen file.
"They have it."
"Yes."
"Then why are you here?"
Edward smiled.
"Because the document is incomplete."
"What is missing?"
Edward looked at her.
"You."
The room went silent.
Suddenly every light in the archive turned red.
A warning siren began.
00:59
00:58
00:57
Richard looked at the screen.
"Someone started the countdown."
Edward turned.
"That's impossible."
Sarah stared at Amelia.
"Thomas."
"What?"
"Your father."
Sarah pointed toward a terminal.
"Thomas built a failsafe."
Amelia rushed to it.
A message appeared.
IF AMELIA HAYES HAS REACHED THIS ROOM, ACTIVATE FINAL PROTOCOL.
Amelia's hands trembled.
Another message appeared.
DO NOT TRUST EDWARD.
Then:
DO NOT TRUST RICHARD.
Amelia froze.
Richard stared at the screen.
"What?"
The final message appeared.
AND ABOVE ALL—
DO NOT TRUST DANIEL CROSS.
Amelia looked toward the ceiling.
Daniel.
Her biological father.
The man who had just saved her.
The man Edward claimed was captured.
The man Thomas had spent twenty-nine years hiding.
Then the archive doors slammed shut.
And somewhere above them—
A man's voice spoke through the intercom.
"Hello, Amelia."
She recognized it immediately.
Daniel.
His voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
"Your father was right."
A pause.
"You should never have trusted me."
Amelia's heart stopped.
Sarah whispered:
"No..."
Richard raised his weapon.
The intercom crackled again.
May you like
Daniel spoke one final sentence.
"Because I was the one who killed Alexander Vale."
