CHAPTER 11 THE HOUSE THAT REMEMBERED

Rain hammered the windshield as Richard drove through the darkness.
The road to the lake had disappeared beneath a curtain of water.
No streetlights.
No traffic.
No houses.
Only black trees bending in the wind.
Amelia sat in the passenger seat.
Elena was behind her.
For ten minutes, neither sister had spoken.
It was strange.
They had spent their entire lives apart.
Yet Amelia couldn't shake the feeling that she already knew her.
The way Elena crossed her arms.
The way she watched the road.
The way her eyes narrowed whenever Richard glanced at the rearview mirror.
Even the tiny habit of touching the birthmark beneath her left eye when she was nervous.
Amelia did the same thing.
She had done it since childhood.
Finally, Amelia broke the silence.
"How old are you?"
"Thirty-three."
Amelia turned.
"Thirty-three?"
Elena nodded.
"The archive said twenty-nine."
"The archive says a lot of things."
"Why?"
"Because Project Seventeen changed my records four times."
Richard glanced back.
"Four?"
"Four legal identities."
Amelia felt a chill.
"Why would they do that?"
Elena looked out the window.
"Because I wasn't supposed to exist."
Sarah sat beside her.
"You always existed."
Elena looked at her mother.
"I know."
Her voice softened.
"But they made sure no one could prove it."
Amelia turned back toward the road.
"Tell me everything."
Elena was silent.
Then she said:
"I don't know everything."
"You know more than me."
"That's not difficult."
"Elena."
The older woman looked at her.
For a moment, Amelia saw something behind those cold blue eyes.
Fear.
Not fear of dying.
Fear of remembering.
"I was eight when Thomas took you."
Amelia's throat tightened.
"You remember?"
"I remember everything."
"What happened?"
Elena looked at Sarah.
"Do you want me to tell her?"
Sarah closed her eyes.
"She deserves the truth."
Elena nodded.
"Then I'll tell her."
She looked at Amelia.
"Samuel Cross believed our family was the most important bloodline in Project Seventeen."
"Why?"
"Because of Alexander."
"My father?"
"Your biological father."
Elena paused.
"He wasn't just an operative."
"He was the first person who discovered what Project Seventeen really was."
Amelia stared.
"He discovered that it wasn't designed to protect military families."
"No."
Elena's voice dropped.
"It was designed to control them."
Twenty-nine years earlier.
The night Amelia was born.
3:11 a.m.
A young Sarah Mercer lay in a hospital bed, exhausted and terrified.
Thomas stood outside the room.
Alexander Vale stood beside him.
Neither man spoke.
Then a nurse ran into the corridor.
"Colonel Hayes."
Thomas turned.
"What?"
"We have a problem."
"What kind?"
"The second baby."
Thomas froze.
"Second?"
The nurse nodded.
"Your daughter isn't the only one."
Alexander stepped forward.
"Where is the other child?"
The nurse's face went pale.
"They took her."
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Military boots.
Thomas looked down the corridor.
Three armed men were approaching.
Alexander whispered:
"Samuel."
Thomas looked at him.
"You said he was dead."
"I was wrong."
The lights went out.
Amelia stared at Elena.
"You remember that?"
"No."
Elena shook her head.
"That's what I was told."
"What were you told?"
"That Samuel took me before you were born."
"But if you were eight..."
"I was eight when Thomas found me."
Amelia's mind raced.
"Where?"
"A facility in Virginia."
"Why were you there?"
"Because Samuel had been using me."
"For what?"
Elena looked at her.
"To find you."
Amelia went still.
"What?"
"They knew you existed."
"How?"
"Because I told them."
Sarah gasped.
Elena looked at her mother.
"I was a child."
Sarah whispered:
"I know."
"They showed me photographs."
"Of Amelia?"
"Yes."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"They asked me where she was."
Amelia couldn't speak.
"I didn't know."
Elena continued.
"But I remembered something."
"What?"
"Your father's house."
"The lake house?"
"Yes."
"I told them you were there."
Sarah covered her mouth.
"But Thomas had already moved you."
Elena nodded.
"That's why they never found you."
Amelia looked down.
"So you saved me."
Elena shook her head.
"No."
She looked directly at her.
"Thomas did."
The SUV turned onto a narrow dirt road.
Richard slowed.
"There."
Through the rain, the lake house appeared.
Dark.
Silent.
Abandoned.
Exactly as Amelia remembered it.
But something was wrong.
The front door was open.
Richard stopped.
"Nobody move."
He pulled his weapon.
Elena was already out of the vehicle.
Richard grabbed her arm.
"Wait."
She looked at him.
"If Daniel is inside, I'm going in."
"You don't know what's inside."
"I know."
"How?"
"Because I built the room."
Richard stared.
"What room?"
Elena walked toward the house.
"The one beneath it."
Amelia followed.
"There's a basement?"
"No."
Elena stopped.
"A bunker."
They entered.
The house smelled of dust and damp wood.
Sarah stayed close to Amelia.
Richard swept the rooms.
Empty.
No furniture.
No signs of recent occupation.
Then Elena stopped beside the fireplace.
She touched the stone.
Pressed once.
Nothing happened.
She pressed twice.
A hidden mechanism clicked.
The fireplace moved.
A staircase appeared.
Amelia stared.
"You knew about this?"
"I lived here."
"When?"
"After Thomas disappeared."
Amelia's heart stopped.
"What do you mean?"
Elena looked at her.
"I was brought here when I was seventeen."
"By whom?"
"Thomas."
"Why?"
"Because he knew Samuel was coming."
Sarah whispered:
"Thomas never told me."
"He couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because someone inside the Army was reporting everything."
Richard suddenly turned.
"Who?"
Elena looked at him.
"That's why I don't trust uniforms."
Richard stiffened.
"What does that mean?"
"It means one of your friends betrayed Thomas."
The room went silent.
Richard's face hardened.
"Who?"
"I don't know his name."
"You must."
"I only know his voice."
"Where did you hear it?"
"Every time they came to interrogate me."
Richard stepped closer.
"What did he say?"
Elena looked at him.
"He always said the same thing."
"What?"
"Colonel Hayes will never reach her."
Richard's expression changed.
"Thomas."
Elena nodded.
"He was terrified of that man."
Amelia looked at Richard.
"Could it be someone from your old unit?"
Richard didn't answer.
Because his phone had started ringing.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
Richard answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a voice.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Richard."
Richard's face drained of color.
Amelia saw it immediately.
"You know him."
Richard couldn't speak.
The voice continued.
"You should have stayed retired."
Richard whispered:
"Samuel."
The call ended.
Sarah stepped backward.
"No."
Elena grabbed her mother's hand.
"He's alive."
Amelia stared at Richard.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"You never told us."
"I didn't know."
"You just called him Samuel."
Richard looked at her.
"I knew his voice."
"How?"
Richard swallowed.
"Because I heard it thirty years ago."
The house suddenly went dark.
Every light disappeared.
Then a projector came alive on the wall.
A video appeared.
Thomas.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting at a desk.
Amelia stepped forward.
Her father's face appeared in the darkness.
"If you're seeing this..."
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
"...then Samuel has found the house."
Amelia's heart broke.
Thomas continued.
"Amelia, if you're with your sister, listen carefully."
Elena moved closer.
Thomas looked at the camera.
"Elena, I'm sorry."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"I promised I would come back for you."
He paused.
"I didn't."
Elena whispered:
"Thomas..."
The recording continued.
"I believed keeping Amelia alive was the only way to defeat Samuel."
Thomas leaned forward.
"But I was wrong."
A folder appeared on the desk.
He opened it.
Inside were photographs.
One of them showed two newborn babies.
Twins.
Amelia stared.
"That's us."
Sarah began crying.
Thomas's voice continued.
"You were born seven minutes apart."
Amelia looked at her mother.
"Seven minutes."
Sarah nodded through tears.
"Seven minutes."
Thomas looked back at the camera.
"Those seven minutes became the most important seven minutes of my life."
The video changed.
A hospital clock.
3:17 A.M.
Then another image.
3:24 A.M.
Thomas said:
"Between those two times, Project Seventeen disappeared one child."
Amelia whispered:
"Elena."
"No."
Elena's voice trembled.
"They didn't disappear me."
She stared at the screen.
"They disappeared you."
Amelia turned.
"What?"
Elena pointed at the photograph.
"Look at the bracelet."
Amelia stepped closer.
The newborn on the left had a white hospital bracelet.
The newborn on the right had a red one.
Amelia looked at the names.
BABY A — AMELIA
BABY B — ELENA
Then Thomas said:
"The child Samuel took was not Elena."
Silence.
Amelia's blood turned cold.
"The records were reversed."
Sarah covered her mouth.
Thomas continued:
"Samuel believed he had taken Elena."
A pause.
"He had actually taken Amelia."
Amelia stared at Elena.
"But I'm here."
Elena nodded slowly.
"Which means..."
Thomas looked into the camera.
"...the woman standing beside you is not the sister Project Seventeen spent twenty-nine years searching for."
The projector flickered.
The screen went black.
Then one final sentence appeared.
ELENA IS NOT THE SECOND CHILD.
Amelia stepped backward.
Sarah whispered:
"Then who is Elena?"
Before anyone could answer—
A gunshot exploded upstairs.
BANG!
Richard shoved everyone toward the bunker stairs.
"DOWN!"
Another shot.
Glass shattered.
Elena pulled Amelia behind the wall.
Richard raised his weapon.
Then footsteps began descending the staircase.
Slow.
Measured.
Unhurried.
Someone was coming down.
Richard aimed into the darkness.
"Show yourself."
A man's voice answered.
"You really should have listened to Thomas."
Amelia's heart stopped.
She knew that voice.
She had heard it before.
In the archive.
In her father's recordings.
In the nightmares she had carried since childhood.
Samuel Cross.
And then the man stepped into the light.
Amelia stared at him.
He was older.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
But his eyes were exactly the same as the photograph.
He looked at Amelia.
Then at Elena.
And smiled.
"My daughters."
Sarah screamed.
"No!"
Samuel looked at her.
"You still don't understand, Sarah."
He raised one hand.
"The girl you call Elena..."
His eyes moved to Amelia.
"...isn't the child I took."
He pointed at Amelia.
"I took you."
The world seemed to stop.
Then Samuel smiled again.
"And now..."
May you like
He whispered,
"...I finally have both of you."
