CHAPTER 19 THE LAST MISSION

03:59.
The underground facility came alive.
Lights flickered on one after another.
Metal doors unlocked.
Security shutters lifted.
Somewhere deep beneath them, machinery began to hum.
Amelia stood in the center of the room.
Her father was beside her.
Her biological father stood on the other side.
Her sister and brother stood behind them.
For the first time in thirty years, all of them were together.
And Project Seventeen was coming for them.
Thomas looked at Richard.
"How many?"
Richard checked his weapon.
"Don't know."
Matthew studied the monitors.
"At least twenty moving through the east corridor."
Sarah looked frightened.
"Soldiers?"
Matthew shook his head.
"No."
"What are they?"
He looked at Amelia.
"People who don't officially exist."
03:41.
The first door exploded inward.
Gunfire erupted.
Richard pulled Sarah behind the concrete pillar.
Thomas pushed Amelia down.
"Stay low!"
Amelia drew her sidearm.
"I can fight."
"I know."
He looked at her.
"That's why I'm afraid."
Two armed men entered.
Richard fired.
The first went down.
The second disappeared behind a steel column.
Elena moved beside Amelia.
"Left."
Amelia turned.
A shadow moved.
She fired.
Silence.
No celebration.
No relief.
Only another door opening.
Thomas looked at the corridor.
"They're not trying to kill us."
Amelia frowned.
"What?"
"They're trying to separate us."
A voice echoed through the speakers.
"Correct."
Samuel.
Amelia looked up.
"Samuel!"
His laughter came through the facility.
"You finally understand."
A monitor turned on.
Samuel appeared.
He was standing in a control room.
Behind him were dozens of screens.
Each showed a member of Amelia's family.
Sarah.
Alexander.
Thomas.
Elena.
Noah.
Richard.
Matthew.
Then Amelia.
Samuel smiled.
"You think this is about killing you?"
Amelia stared at the screen.
"What do you want?"
"Completion."
"You've already lost."
"No."
Samuel shook his head.
"You've finally become useful."
Amelia raised her weapon toward the screen.
"Come say that to my face."
Samuel smiled.
"I will."
The screen went black.
Then the lights died.
03:26.
Darkness.
Amelia heard breathing.
Someone moved behind her.
She turned.
"Elena?"
No answer.
"Elena!"
A hand grabbed her wrist.
Amelia spun and nearly fired.
Thomas caught the weapon.
"It's me."
She exhaled.
"Where is everyone?"
Thomas looked around.
"They separated us."
Amelia's stomach dropped.
"Sarah?"
"Missing."
"Alexander?"
"Missing."
"Noah?"
Thomas shook his head.
"Missing."
Amelia looked at him.
"What about Elena?"
Thomas hesitated.
Then—
a voice came from behind them.
"She's here."
Elena stepped from the darkness.
Blood covered her sleeve.
Amelia rushed toward her.
"You're hurt."
"It's not mine."
A body lay behind her.
One of Samuel's guards.
Elena looked at Thomas.
"They took Noah."
Thomas closed his eyes.
"No."
Amelia grabbed his arm.
"Where?"
"The old laboratory."
"Then we're going."
Thomas stopped her.
"Amelia."
"No."
"Listen to me."
She stared at him.
"If Samuel gets Noah into that room—"
"He won't."
"You don't know that."
"I know my brother."
Thomas looked at her.
Amelia's voice hardened.
"He spent his whole life alone."
She loaded another magazine.
"He's not going to die alone."
03:11.
They reached the old laboratory.
The doors were open.
Inside—
Noah stood in the center of the room.
His wrists were bound.
Samuel stood behind him.
And beside Samuel—
Evelyn.
Amelia stopped.
"Let him go."
Samuel smiled.
"There she is."
Noah looked at Amelia.
"Don't come closer."
Samuel pressed a hand against his shoulder.
"Noah has finally learned something."
"What?"
"Obedience."
Noah looked at Samuel.
Then smiled.
"You still believe that."
Samuel frowned.
Noah suddenly slammed his head backward.
Samuel staggered.
Noah kicked the weapon from his hand.
Evelyn reached for him.
Elena fired.
The bullet struck the floor beside Evelyn.
"Touch my brother again."
Evelyn stopped.
Samuel looked at Amelia.
"Still protecting them."
"Always."
Samuel laughed.
"That's what made you dangerous."
Amelia raised her weapon.
"You're finished."
Samuel shook his head.
"Not until you remember."
"Remember what?"
"The choice."
Thomas stepped forward.
"Samuel."
Samuel looked at him.
"Thomas."
The two men stared at each other.
Decades of hatred passed between them without a word.
Samuel smiled.
"You still don't remember everything."
Thomas's jaw tightened.
"I remember enough."
"No."
Samuel shook his head.
"You remember what I allowed you to remember."
Samuel walked toward the central console.
He pressed a button.
A recording appeared.
September 17, 1997.
The hospital.
Thomas.
Sarah.
Three newborn babies.
But this time the footage continued beyond the seven-minute gap.
Amelia stared.
She saw herself.
A newborn.
Then Elena.
Then Noah.
Thomas stood over them.
Samuel approached.
But Thomas wasn't fighting.
He was holding a document.
He handed it to Samuel.
Samuel read it.
Then smiled.
Amelia's blood went cold.
"What is that?"
Thomas looked at her.
"I made a deal."
"With him?"
Thomas nodded.
"What deal?"
Samuel answered.
"Thomas agreed to surrender the children's identities."
Amelia stared at her father.
"Why?"
Thomas closed his eyes.
"Because I believed it would save you."
Samuel laughed.
"He believed I would protect all three of you."
Thomas whispered:
"I was wrong."
Amelia stepped toward him.
"You gave us to them."
"I gave them your identities."
"Same thing."
"No."
Thomas's voice cracked.
"I thought I could outsmart them."
Samuel smiled.
"You couldn't."
Thomas looked at Amelia.
"I was desperate."
"You should have trusted me."
"You were eleven."
"I was your daughter."
Thomas's eyes filled.
"I know."
"You should have told me."
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
Thomas looked toward the screen.
"Because I didn't remember."
Amelia froze.
"What?"
"After I signed the agreement, they erased my memory."
Samuel nodded.
"Phase Five."
Thomas continued.
"I woke up believing I'd stopped them."
He looked at Amelia.
"I thought I had saved you."
"But you hadn't."
"No."
Thomas swallowed.
"I had helped build the system that destroyed your family."
Silence.
Amelia felt tears on her face.
For the first time, she didn't know whether to forgive him.
Then Alexander appeared behind Samuel.
Samuel turned.
Alexander struck him.
Samuel crashed into the console.
Evelyn reached for her weapon.
Sarah grabbed her from behind.
They struggled.
Richard entered with Matthew.
"Everybody down!"
Gunfire erupted.
Screens shattered.
Alarms screamed.
Thomas pulled Amelia toward Noah.
"Get them out!"
"No."
"Amelia!"
"I'm staying."
Thomas stared at her.
"Why?"
"Because you spent thirty years fighting this alone."
She raised her weapon.
"You're not alone anymore."
Thomas looked at her.
Then smiled.
"That's my girl."
Samuel crawled toward the main terminal.
He pressed his bloody hand against the biometric scanner.
The system accepted it.
A message appeared:
FINAL ACTIVATION
SUBJECTS 17-A, 17-B, 17-C CONFIRMED
Samuel smiled.
"It's over."
Thomas looked at the screen.
"No."
Samuel laughed.
"You don't understand."
The doors locked.
Every exit sealed.
The countdown appeared.
00:59
Amelia looked at Matthew.
"What happens?"
Matthew stared at the screen.
"If the countdown reaches zero, the system overwrites every identity connected to Project Seventeen."
"Can we stop it?"
Matthew shook his head.
"Not from here."
Samuel smiled.
"Exactly."
He looked at Amelia.
"You will wake tomorrow as someone else."
Elena raised her weapon.
"Then why are you still talking?"
Samuel laughed.
"Because I want to watch."
00:43.
Thomas suddenly walked toward the terminal.
Amelia grabbed him.
"What are you doing?"
"Finishing what I started."
"No."
"Listen."
He pulled a small key from his pocket.
"The system needs one final authorization."
Matthew's eyes widened.
"The founder."
Thomas nodded.
"You."
"No."
"Yes."
Thomas looked at Amelia.
"Project Seventeen was built around my authorization."
He handed her the key.
"Now it will end with it."
Amelia stared.
"What do I do?"
Thomas pointed toward the terminal.
"Insert the key."
She did.
The machine recognized it.
FOUNDER AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED
Samuel's smile disappeared.
"No."
Thomas looked at him.
"You wanted the founder."
He stepped aside.
"You got him."
00:29.
Thomas began typing.
Samuel lunged.
Alexander tackled him.
Richard restrained Evelyn.
Sarah pulled Noah away from the machinery.
Elena stood beside Amelia.
"What's happening?"
Matthew stared at the screen.
"He's reversing the system."
Amelia looked at Thomas.
"Can you stop the overwrite?"
Thomas nodded.
"But it will trigger the archive release."
"Do it."
"Once I start, I can't stop it."
"Then don't."
Thomas looked at her.
She smiled through tears.
"End it."
He pressed ENTER.
The system screamed.
Every screen turned white.
Then—
PROJECT SEVENTEEN ARCHIVE RELEASED.
The facility shook.
Files began transmitting.
Military servers.
Federal databases.
News networks.
Private archives.
Thousands of documents.
Millions of pages.
Every secret.
Every name.
Every experiment.
Every payment.
Every false identity.
Every death.
Every child.
Every witness.
Everything.
Samuel stared at the screens.
"No."
Thomas looked at him.
"It's over."
Samuel lunged toward Thomas.
Amelia stepped between them.
"Don't."
Samuel stopped.
"You think you've won?"
Amelia raised her weapon.
"No."
She looked at the thousands of files flooding the world.
"We made sure everyone knows."
Samuel's face collapsed.
For the first time—
he looked afraid.
00:08.
The building began to collapse.
Matthew shouted:
"We have to go!"
Thomas looked at the terminal.
The system still needed one final command.
Amelia understood.
"Dad."
He looked at her.
"You have to come."
"I can't."
"Yes, you can."
"The system won't release everything unless someone stays."
Amelia's eyes widened.
"No."
Thomas smiled.
"I've spent thirty years waiting for this moment."
"You don't have to die."
"I already died once."
He looked at the American flag patch on his uniform.
"This time, I get to choose."
Amelia shook her head.
"Don't do this."
Thomas stepped toward her.
He touched her cheek.
"You were never the girl I had to save."
Tears filled her eyes.
"You were the reason I kept fighting."
He hugged her.
"Go."
"Dad—"
"Go, kiddo."
She didn't move.
Thomas gently pushed her toward the exit.
"That's an order."
Amelia cried.
"I hate your orders."
Thomas smiled.
"I know."
The doors began closing.
Amelia reached for him.
"Dad!"
Thomas stood alone beneath the red emergency lights.
He gave her a final salute.
Then the door slammed shut.
00:00.
The underground facility exploded.
Amelia woke to silence.
Ash covered the ground.
Emergency vehicles surrounded Fort Belmont.
Sarah was alive.
Alexander was alive.
Elena was alive.
Noah was alive.
Richard and Matthew had survived.
But Thomas—
was gone.
Amelia stood among the ruins.
In her hands was the old American flag.
The same flag she had held at his funeral.
Only now she understood.
He hadn't left it behind because he was dead.
He had left it behind because he wanted her to carry it forward.
She unfolded it.
The wind caught it.
And somewhere in the distance, sirens faded into the morning.
Project Seventeen was finished.
But one question remained.
Who had authorized it in 1996?
Amelia looked toward the horizon.
The final archive had released thousands of secrets.
But one file remained encrypted.
DIRECTOR — UNKNOWN
Beneath it was a single sentence:
THE FOUNDER WAS NOT THE HIGHEST AUTHORITY.
Amelia stared.
Then her phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
Old.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Captain Hayes."
Amelia froze.
"Who is this?"
The voice answered:
"You've been looking for the wrong man."
The call ended.
Amelia lowered the phone.
Behind her, Alexander asked:
"Who was it?"
She looked at the ruins.
"I don't know."
May you like
Then she looked at the flag.
"But I think I know where we're going next."
