CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN THEY NEVER BOTHERED TO KNOW

The silence inside the ballroom became unbearable.

Patricia Whitlock's hand slowly released the torn lace.

"No..."

Her voice cracked.

"This... this isn't possible."

The venue manager calmly turned another page inside the leather portfolio.

"The ownership transfer was completed three years ago, Mrs. Whitlock. Miss Clara Mason is the sole owner of Whitestone Manor."

A murmur spread through the guests.

Andrew blinked.

"You... bought this place?"

Clara met his eyes without emotion.

"I didn't buy it."

"I built it."

Every face in the ballroom turned toward her.

"My father left me an abandoned vineyard after he died. Everyone thought it was worthless."

She paused.

"I sold my apartment, borrowed against every asset I owned, worked eighteen-hour days, and spent four years turning that land into one of the most exclusive wedding venues in the state."

The manager nodded respectfully.

"Today alone, this estate is valued at over eighty million dollars."

Patricia stumbled backward.

"Eighty..."

Her knees nearly gave out.

"But... Andrew said you worked as a wedding planner."

"I do."

Clara answered quietly.

"I never believed owning a business made me better than anyone else."

She glanced at Andrew.

"I wanted someone who loved me before they knew what I had."

Andrew's face turned white.

Every dinner...

Every family gathering...

Every insult his mother had thrown...

Clara had accepted them in silence.

Not because she couldn't fight back.

Because she had hoped kindness would be enough.

She had been wrong.

Then Clara looked toward the guests.

"I'm sorry your celebration became this."

She smiled sadly.

"But my wedding ends here."

Gasps echoed throughout the ballroom.

Andrew reached for her arm.

"Clara... don't do this."

She stepped away before he could touch her.

"You didn't lose me today."

"You lost me every time you chose your mother's pride over my dignity."
