Chapter 9 - The Grave Without a Name

The phrase “key to the grave” led nowhere.

Not at first.

Richard Mercer was buried in the family cemetery.

Evelyn’s grave was there too.

Daniel visited both.

Nothing.

Natalie studied Richard’s letter again.

Do not trust Jonathan.

Listen to Natalie.

Protect what the family buried.

That last line had seemed metaphorical.

Now it did not.

They searched property records.

The Mercer family had owned seven estates over four generations.

One included a private cemetery in Pennsylvania.

Most graves belonged to nineteenth-century relatives.

One grave had no name.

Only a date.

October 12, 2008.

Evelyn died October 12, 2008.

But she was officially buried in New York.

Daniel and Natalie drove to Pennsylvania with Brooks and federal agents.

Beneath the unnamed marker they did not find a body.

They found a sealed steel container.

Inside were financial records.

Photographs.

Audio files.

And Evelyn’s handwritten journal.

Richard had created a second archive after learning how his daughter died.

He had spent years quietly collecting evidence.

The final journal entry was written three days before Evelyn’s death.

Jonathan keeps asking me whether Daniel is worth destroying the family over.

I told him Daniel isn’t even born yet.

He said that’s exactly the point.

Daniel stopped reading.

“What does that mean?”

Natalie took the journal.

The next page contained a sentence crossed out repeatedly.

Mom says Jonathan is only trying to protect his son.

Daniel stared.

“His son?”

Natalie’s expression changed.

Richard had never doubted Daniel was his child.

At least not publicly.

But if Evelyn believed Jonathan was protecting “his son” before Daniel was born…

Daniel felt suddenly cold.

They found Margaret at Mercer House.

Daniel placed the journal in front of her.

“What does this mean?”

Margaret read the line.

All color left her face.

“Daniel…”

“Who is my father?”

She closed the journal.

“Richard.”

“Who is my biological father?”

Margaret began shaking.

Daniel knew before she said it.

“Jonathan.”

The room became silent.

Natalie took one step back.

Daniel laughed once.

A hollow sound.

Jonathan Vale had not merely been the family attorney.

He had been protecting Daniel.

Or claiming to.

Margaret explained that the affair happened during a separation from Richard.

She became pregnant.

Richard discovered the truth.

He chose to raise Daniel anyway.

“He loved you,” Margaret said.

“Enough to hide the truth?”

“He said being your father was his choice.”

Daniel turned away.

Everything inside him felt unstable.

Richard had protected a child who was not biologically his.

Jonathan had used that child’s signatures in financial crimes.

Perhaps murdered Richard.

Perhaps murdered Evelyn.

And now Daniel understood why Jonathan had always remained close.

Not loyalty.

Possession.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

Jonathan’s voice.

“I suppose Margaret finally told you.”

Daniel could barely speak.

“Where are you?”

“You sound angry.”

“You murdered Richard.”

“I protected you.”

“By killing him?”

“Richard planned to expose everything.”

“He raised me.”

“He lied to you.”

“He was my father.”

Jonathan went silent.

Daniel continued.

“You were just the man who helped create me.”

That landed.

Jonathan’s voice hardened.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

“What?”

“Evelyn’s journal.”

“No.”

“You will bring it.”

“Or?”

A faint cry came through the phone.

Rosa.

Then Marcus.

Jonathan said:

“I have two people who helped betray me.”

Daniel’s hand clenched.

“Where?”

“Tomorrow. Midnight.”

A location arrived by text.

An abandoned Mercer textile mill.

Jonathan added:

“And bring Natalie.”

Daniel’s blood went cold.

“Why?”

Jonathan laughed softly.

“Because Richard left the real evidence in her name.”

Then he hung up.

Natalie looked at Daniel.

“What did he say?”

Daniel did not want to tell her.

She knew anyway.

“He wants me.”

Daniel nodded.

May you like

Natalie picked up Evelyn’s journal.

“Then we give him exactly what he wants.”
