Chapter 12 - The Woman They Underestimated

For years, Margaret and Jonathan had made the same mistake.

They assumed Natalie reacted emotionally.

That was why Margaret staged scenes to make her look unstable.

Why Jonathan expected her to run.

Why Daniel had once interpreted tears as weakness.

But before marrying into the Mercer family, Natalie Reeves had been a corporate compliance attorney.

She understood leverage.

And she had spent three years preparing.

Natalie had not simply disappeared.

She had investigated.

Privately.

Quietly.

She had located four former Mercer employees.

Two bankers.

One retired accountant.

And a nonprofit director who admitted Jonathan pressured him into signing false grant certifications.

“I was waiting for proof connecting everything,” Natalie explained.

“The ledger.”

“Yes.”

“And now we have it.”

“Part of it.”

She placed a folder in front of Daniel.

Inside was a reconstruction of the stolen funds.

$186 million over fifteen years.

Daniel stared at the total.

“This wasn’t survival.”

“No.”

“This was an empire.”

“Yes.”

Natalie had also discovered Jonathan owned significant interests in companies that profited whenever Mercer Foundation money moved.

He had stolen from Margaret too.

Margaret thought they were partners.

Jonathan had been using her.

That became their pressure point.

Daniel went to Margaret.

He showed her the accounts.

At first she denied it.

Then she calculated.

Margaret was still, at heart, a woman who understood money.

She realized Jonathan had taken nearly sixty million dollars more than she knew.

Rage replaced fear.

“He stole from me.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You stole it first.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I know what I am.”

It was the first honest sentence she had spoken in days.

“Help us stop him.”

“What happens to me?”

“You testify.”

“And then?”

“You accept whatever happens.”

Margaret’s face hardened.

“Prison?”

“Probably.”

She looked toward the window.

Daniel expected refusal.

Instead Margaret said:

“Fine.”

He stared.

“Fine?”

“If I run, Jonathan wins.”

Daniel understood something then.

Margaret’s morality was broken.

Her pride was not.

She would go to prison if she could drag Jonathan down with her.

They arranged a controlled meeting.

Margaret called Jonathan.

She claimed she had the original trust.

She wanted money and safe passage.

Jonathan agreed.

But before the meeting happened, Detective Brooks called Daniel.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Margaret’s accounts show a payment to the mechanic who serviced Richard’s car.”

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

“How much?”

“Fifty thousand dollars.”

“When?”

“Two days before the crash.”

Daniel looked at Margaret.

She could see the answer in his face.

“What?”

Daniel ended the call.

“Did you pay the mechanic?”

Margaret went still.

The room changed.

Daniel whispered:

“Did you?”

Margaret sat down.

“Yes.”

Natalie stared at her.

Daniel felt the final piece of hope disappear.

“What did you pay him to do?”

May you like

Margaret looked at her son.

“To make sure Richard never reached the FBI.”
