Chapter 11 - Richard’s Last Night

Natalie did not speak during the drive back.

Daniel understood.

Richard had been the one person she still believed had tried to protect her.

Now even that memory was corrupted.

At the hospital, Marcus provided the first useful clue.

Jonathan had spoken on the phone while holding them.

He said:

“The original autopsy can never surface.”

Not Richard’s autopsy.

Evelyn’s.

Brooks obtained a court order.

The original medical examiner had retired to Florida.

His archived notes revealed something omitted from Evelyn’s official report.

Bruising on both wrists.

A second drug in her blood.

And a handwritten comment:

INJURY PATTERN INCONSISTENT WITH SELF-ADMINISTRATION.

Evelyn had not taken the pills willingly.

Someone forced them on her.

Richard had been at St. Catherine’s that night.

So had Jonathan.

So had Margaret.

Three suspects.

Daniel returned to Evelyn’s audio cassette.

There was static at the end.

A technician cleaned it.

Five additional seconds emerged.

Evelyn’s voice.

“If Dad gets here in time, I’ll be okay.”

Richard had not been her threat.

He had been the person she was waiting for.

That broke Jonathan’s lie.

Richard arrived too late.

Margaret finally told the rest.

Jonathan had arranged Evelyn’s commitment using a psychiatrist he controlled.

Margaret signed the paperwork.

Richard discovered where she was and rushed there.

By the time he arrived, Evelyn was unconscious.

She died hours later.

“Why did he stay with you?” Daniel asked.

Margaret looked older.

“Because you were born six months later.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Richard had lost his daughter.

Then raised the child conceived by the man responsible.

“He stayed for me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Margaret began crying.

“He said you had not committed our sins.”

That sentence broke something inside Daniel.

For weeks he had questioned who his father was.

Now he understood.

Biology was the least important part.

Richard Mercer had been his father because he chose to be.

Again and again.

Even when it hurt.

Especially when it hurt.

The next morning, federal agents found Jonathan’s offshore accounts.

They also found one recent transfer.

Twenty million dollars.

Destination: Mercer Strategic Holdings.

Authorized by Daniel Mercer.

Again.

But this time Daniel had signed nothing.

Someone was preparing to frame him exactly as Natalie had been framed.

History was repeating.

By noon, the board suspended Daniel as CEO.

News channels reported possible fraud.

His photograph appeared beside the headline:

MERCER HEIR LINKED TO SECRET OFFSHORE TRANSFER.

Natalie found him alone in his office packing a box.

“Now you know.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“What it feels like.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“And?”

“I’m terrified.”

Natalie gave him a sad smile.

“So was I.”

That night, Daniel received an anonymous email.

Only one sentence.

YOU HAVE 72 HOURS BEFORE THE COMPANY COLLAPSES.

Attached was a list of creditors.

If the offshore transfer triggered contractual clauses, Mercer Industries could be forced into bankruptcy.

Jonathan was not just destroying Daniel.

He was destroying Richard’s company.

Unless Daniel surrendered the last thing Jonathan wanted.

The trust.

Natalie’s trust.

The document that could expose decades of ownership fraud.

Daniel looked at her.

“I won’t ask you to give it up.”

Natalie answered:

“Good.”

May you like

Then she smiled.

“Because I have a better idea.”
