Chapter 10: The Lost Heiress
Elaine Parker was Victor Thorne’s biological daughter.
Officially, Victor and Evelyn’s first child, Elizabeth, died shortly after birth.
The hospital certificate documented respiratory failure.
Helena’s letter claimed the baby survived.
Evelyn feared Victor would use the child as another instrument of succession. With help from a nurse, she arranged for the infant to be adopted under another name.
Elaine grew up without knowing her identity.
Celeste discovered the truth after Evelyn’s death and quietly brought Elaine into her foundation.
“Did Victor know she lived?” Marcus asked.
“Not until recently,” Celeste said.
“How recently?”
“Three months ago.”
That was when Elaine accessed the trust archive.
It was also when Victor accelerated plans around Khloe’s pregnancy.
If Elaine was Victor’s biological daughter, she might have a claim to leadership under the family trust.
But the Aurelia shares still belonged to Helena’s line.
Victor faced challenges from both sides.
His lost daughter could claim the Thorne dynasty.
Khloe’s daughter could control the company.
“Why did Elaine alter Helena’s letter?” Khloe asked.
Celeste answered carefully.
“She wanted Marcus to reject Victor before learning she was his sister.”
“Why?”
“Because she believed Marcus would protect the company’s structure even after discovering the truth.”
“She thought making him believe he wasn’t a Thorne would reveal who he really was.”
“Yes.”
Marcus stood.
“You allowed her to do this?”
“I told her not to alter the document.”
“But you continued using her.”
Celeste remained silent.
Police searched the river area.
They found no body.
A traffic camera recorded Elaine leaving her car and entering Simon Vale’s vehicle.
The blood inside the car came from a cut on her hand.
She had staged a possible abduction.
Simon was not her captor.
He was helping her.
A message arrived on Khloe’s secure phone.
It contained a location and one sentence.
COME WITHOUT VICTOR’S PEOPLE. I HAVE YOUR MOTHER’S FINAL RECORDING.
Khloe showed Julian.
The location was an abandoned research facility once owned by Rossi Clinical Systems.
Police prepared a controlled meeting.
Khloe could not attend physically.
Elaine agreed to communicate through a secured video connection.
The old laboratory appeared on-screen.
Elaine sat beside Simon Vale.
Simon looked exhausted and frightened.
“You forged my medical order,” Khloe said.
“Yes.”
“Why should I believe anything you say?”
“Because Victor has the original consent file, and he will destroy it if we do not release everything.”
Elaine placed a metal box on the table.
Inside were Evelyn Thorne’s journals, Helena’s recordings, and early corporate documents.
“Why did you help Victor?” Marcus demanded.
Simon answered.
“My daughter needed a transplant. Victor paid for it.”
“So you falsified records.”
“I began with small things. Private screenings. Discreet prescriptions. Then he owned every compromise.”
Again, Victor had found a wound and renamed control as rescue.
“Was the attack planned?” Khloe asked.
“No,” Simon said. “The sedation and false incapacity were planned. Isabella was supposed to provoke an argument, not use physical force.”
“You expected me to be declared unstable because I became angry at a woman threatening my family.”
“Yes.”
“Then you intended an attack. You simply preferred one without bruises.”
Simon lowered his eyes.
Elaine activated Helena’s recording.
Khloe’s mother appeared on an old screen.
She was thin from treatment but mentally clear.
“If you are seeing this,” Helena began, “Victor has attempted to use the Aurelia succession clause.”
She explained the company’s creation.
Daniel and Victor were identical twins raised separately.
Daniel possessed scientific talent and little interest in wealth.
Victor possessed ambition and access to capital.
Helena loved Daniel.
Victor desired both Helena and her work.
After Daniel’s death, Victor offered to protect Khloe if Helena surrendered the patents.
She refused.
Then Helena revealed the final secret.
“The biological verification sequence is not necessary to operate Aurelia.”
Khloe stared at the screen.
“It is a decoy,” Helena continued. “I allowed Victor to believe the technology required material from my female descendants. In reality, the verification can be replaced through a legal release held by the trust.”
Victor had spent years pursuing Khloe and her daughter for a biological key that did not exist.
The genetic marker was real, but it was not essential.
Helena designed the deception to expose any attempt to exploit her descendants.
“The moment Victor orders unauthorized testing,” she said, “the trust receives proof that he is acting against the beneficiaries.”
The genetic testing itself triggered another clause.
Victor’s voting rights in the medical division were automatically suspended upon verified biological exploitation.
Miriam checked the trust documents.
The clause existed in a sealed appendix that activated only after evidence was submitted.
Victor had already signed his own removal.
Khloe almost smiled.
Her mother had understood him perfectly.
Then Helena’s expression became sad.
“Khloe, I am sorry that protecting you required leaving questions behind. Secrets grow teeth. Even secrets created from love.”
The recording ended.
Elaine closed the box.
“Victor knows we have this,” she said.
“How?” Marcus asked.
Simon looked toward a window outside the camera’s frame.
“Because he followed us.”
The laboratory lights went out.
