Chapter 1: The Recording

The fetal monitor filled the private examination room with a rapid, mechanical heartbeat.
Khloe lay on the hospital bed with one hand over her stomach and the other gripping the white sheet beneath her.
One hundred forty-six beats per minute.
Then one hundred fifty.
Then one hundred forty-eight.
Her daughter was still alive.
For the moment, that was the only truth Khloe could bear.
Dr. Lena Hart moved the ultrasound wand carefully across Khloe’s abdomen while two nurses checked the bruising along her side.
“There is no immediate sign of internal bleeding,” Lena said. “But the impact may have caused a partial placental separation.”
Khloe stared at the ceiling.
“What does that mean?”
“It means we monitor you closely. If the bleeding increases or the baby shows distress, we may have to deliver early.”
At twenty-nine weeks, every additional day mattered.
Khloe closed her eyes.
Only thirty minutes earlier, Isabella Rossi’s heel had driven into her side.
Now Isabella was in a secured office two floors below, telling hospital security that Khloe had attacked first.
Marcus stood near the door.
He had not moved closer since Khloe told him not to touch her.
His black tuxedo looked wrong beneath the sterile lights. A streak of Khloe’s blood marked one cuff where he had tried to lift her from the marble floor.
“Khloe,” he said quietly.
She turned her face away.
Her uncle Julian stood beside the monitor, watching Marcus with open distrust.
Dr. Julian Cross had spent twenty-seven years building Cross Medical Center into one of the most respected private hospitals in the country. He was a surgeon, a board chairman, and the only member of Khloe’s family who had never treated Marcus Thorne’s wealth like a reason to remain silent.
“Security has the footage,” Julian said.
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Then play it.”
“Not here.”
“I need to know what happened.”
Khloe looked at him.
“You walked in and saw me on the floor.”
“I saw the end.”
“You saw enough.”
Marcus flinched.
Before he could answer, Julian’s phone vibrated.
He read the message, and something in his expression changed.
“What is it?” Khloe asked.
Julian slipped the phone into his pocket.
“Security recovered the recording.”
“And?”
“It began earlier than we expected.”
Marcus became very still.
“How much earlier?”
Julian did not answer him.
He looked at Khloe.
“Your examination comes first.”
“No.”
Khloe pushed herself upright.
Pain tore through her side.
The monitor accelerated.
Lena placed a hand on her shoulder.
“You need to remain still.”
“I need to see what was recorded.”
Julian hesitated.
Then he nodded toward a nurse.
A tablet was brought into the room.
Julian positioned it where Khloe could see without moving.
The recording began at 10:41 p.m.
The suite was empty.
The marble table stood beneath a vase of white orchids. The crystal glass Isabella would later shatter rested beside a silver water pitcher.
At 10:46, Marcus entered.
Khloe stopped breathing.
He looked around the room, then closed the door behind him.
Marcus reached inside his tuxedo jacket and removed a thick cream-colored envelope.
He lifted the orchid arrangement and placed the envelope beneath it.
Khloe looked toward him.
“What is that?”
Marcus said nothing.
On the screen, he checked his watch.
At 10:49, Isabella entered.
She was wearing the same crimson gown.
But her expression was not angry.
She smiled at Marcus like someone arriving for a planned meeting.
The camera’s microphone captured her voice.
“You brought the documents.”
Marcus nodded.
“They are under the flowers.”
Khloe felt the room tilt.
Isabella moved closer to him.
“Did she sign?”
“No.”
“Then why are we here?”
Marcus lowered his voice.
“Because I told Victor this ends tonight.”
Isabella laughed.
“You don’t end anything. Your father owns every part of your life.”
“Not Khloe.”
“Especially Khloe.”
Marcus glanced toward the door.
“I will not let him force the procedure.”
Khloe’s hand tightened over her stomach.
What procedure?
Isabella’s smile disappeared.
“You knew the agreement. Once the child reaches viability, the Aurelia Trust activates. Khloe becomes voting guardian until the heir turns twenty-five.”
“I know.”
“And if Khloe remains conscious and legally competent, Victor loses control of Thorne Global.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“That does not give him the right to hurt her.”
“It gives him the right to protect what belongs to his family.”
“It doesn’t belong to him.”
Isabella stared at Marcus.
“Careful.”
He reached beneath the flowers and removed the envelope again.
“I’m taking these to Julian.”
“You do that, and your father will expose why you married her.”
Khloe looked at Marcus.
His face in the hospital room had gone completely pale.
On the recording, Marcus froze.
Isabella continued.
“He will tell Khloe you knew about the trust before your first date. He will show her the agreement you signed. He will tell her the marriage was part of the acquisition plan.”
The sound of the fetal monitor seemed deafening.
Khloe’s voice came out barely above a whisper.
“What acquisition plan?”
Marcus took one step toward her.
“Khloe—”
Julian moved between them.
“Stay where you are.”
The video continued.
Marcus placed the envelope back beneath the flowers.
“I did what my father asked at the beginning,” he said. “That does not mean the marriage was false.”
“Does Khloe know that?”
“No.”
“Then it was false enough.”
Isabella touched his chest.
Marcus caught her wrist and pushed it away.
“You are not part of my marriage.”
“I could have been.”
“You never were.”
Isabella’s eyes hardened.
“You came to me every time she asked questions you couldn’t answer.”
Khloe felt as though the hospital bed had disappeared beneath her.
Marcus closed his eyes.
The silence was confession enough.
On-screen, Isabella leaned closer.
“Victor doesn’t care whether you love her. He cares about the shares. Once the baby is born, Khloe controls fifty-one percent of Thorne Global. If she is declared medically incapacitated, temporary authority passes to her husband.”
She tapped the envelope.
“You.”
Marcus shook his head.
“I will not sign the guardianship transfer.”
“You already signed it.”
“I signed estate documents. You changed the pages.”
Isabella smiled.
“Prove it.”
Footsteps sounded in the hallway outside the recorded suite.
Marcus looked toward the door.
“I’m going to get Julian.”
He left at 10:53.
Four minutes later, Khloe entered alone.
The rest of the recording showed exactly what Isabella had done.
Every threat.
Every shove.
Every brutal movement.
When the video ended, the examination room became silent.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“You knew our child controlled your family’s company.”
“Yes.”
“You knew before you met me.”
“Yes.”
“You married me because your father told you to.”
“At first, I agreed to meet you because of the trust.”
“That is not what I asked.”
Marcus’s eyes filled.
“I married you because I loved you.”
“You lied to me every day.”
“I was trying to stop him.”
“After helping him get close enough to control me.”
A nurse entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was the envelope from beneath the flowers.
Julian opened it with gloved hands.
The first document was a medical authorization.
It approved an emergency surgical delivery if Khloe displayed symptoms of emotional instability or fetal distress.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Khloe had never seen it.
The second document transferred temporary guardianship of the unborn child to Marcus if Khloe became medically incapacitated.
The third assigned the voting rights of the Aurelia Trust to Victor Thorne.
Again, Khloe’s signature appeared.
Again, it was forged.
Julian turned to Marcus.
“Did you bring these documents into my hospital?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I found them in my father’s private office.”
“And instead of bringing them directly to the police, you hid them beneath flowers?”
“I needed Isabella to confirm what they were.”
“You arranged a private meeting with the woman who had been harassing your pregnant wife?”
“I was trying to record her.”
Julian pointed toward the camera.
“You were standing beneath a security system owned by my hospital. You could have come to me.”
Marcus looked at Khloe.
“I did not know who I could trust.”
Khloe laughed once.
The sound was empty.
“You trusted Isabella more than your wife.”
The fetal monitor suddenly changed.
The heartbeat slowed.
One hundred twenty.
One hundred ten.
Ninety-eight.
Dr. Lena Hart turned toward the screen.
“Khloe, lie back.”
The room erupted into movement.
Nurses adjusted the monitors. Oxygen was placed over Khloe’s face.
Marcus tried to approach.
Julian blocked him.
The heartbeat fell to eighty-seven.
Lena’s voice became sharp.
“We may need to deliver now.”
Khloe reached for Julian’s hand.
Her eyes remained fixed on Marcus.
May you like
“If anything happens to me,” she whispered, “do not let him control my daughter.”
Then the monitor alarm began screaming.
