Chapter 18 — The Final Experiment

The countdown continued.
09:59:42
09:59:41
09:59:40
The numbers reflected across the faces of everyone standing inside the underground chamber.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed normally.
Because they all understood the same thing.
Project Nightfall had not been destroyed.
It had been waiting.
Waiting for the one person who could activate it.
Edward Ashcroft.
And the one person who could stop it.
Clifford Bennett.
Edward stood beside the control panel like a man returning to a home he had never truly left.
His expression wasn't evil.
That was what frightened everyone.
A villain who hated the world was predictable.
Edward didn't hate the world.
He believed he could save it.
And history had shown that people who believed they alone could save humanity were often the most dangerous people alive.
Clifford stared at him.
"You built all of this."
Edward looked at him.
"Yes."
"And you abandoned it."
"No."
Edward corrected him.
"I protected it."
Clifford's jaw tightened.
"You destroyed lives."
Edward looked toward the archive.
"I made sacrifices."
"People always say that when they're the ones making others suffer."
A faint smile appeared on Edward's face.
"You sound like your mother."
The mention of Margaret changed the room.
Clifford stepped closer.
"Don't say her name."
Edward's expression softened.
"She was extraordinary."
"She saw the potential of Nightfall."
"She understood what it could become."
"She simply lacked the courage to finish what we started."
Avery moved beside her father.
"Don't listen to him."
Edward looked at her.
"You have Margaret's eyes."
"And her stubbornness."
Avery's voice was cold.
"And you have my father's arrogance."
For the first time...
Edward looked impressed.
"She raised you well."
Robert studied the countdown.
"Can we stop it?"
Caldwell examined the controls.
"There must be an emergency shutdown."
Edward shook his head.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"There isn't."
"Why?"
"Because Margaret designed it that way."
The words shocked everyone.
"Margaret?"
Edward nodded.
"She knew if Nightfall was ever activated, someone would try to force it offline."
"So she created a safeguard."
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"What safeguard?"
Edward looked toward Clifford.
"A human decision."
The room went silent.
"What does that mean?"
Edward answered:
"The system requires the person with the Bennett bloodline and the person with the Ashcroft bloodline to agree."
Clifford looked at him.
"Agree to what?"
Edward smiled.
"To continue."
The countdown continued.
09:35:18
09:35:17
09:35:16
Catherine stepped forward.
"You knew this entire time."
Edward looked at her.
His expression changed slightly.
"My daughter."
Catherine froze.
Even after everything...
he still called her that.
"You knew I was Bennett."
Edward nodded.
"Yes."
"Then why did you let me believe I was an Ashcroft?"
Edward was silent.
Then:
"Because the Ashcroft name protected you."
Catherine laughed bitterly.
"Protected me?"
"You made me part of the same empire that destroyed my family."
Edward looked away.
"I was trying to keep you alive."
"No."
Her voice broke.
"You were trying to keep control."
For the first time...
Edward had no answer.
Sebastian watched the exchange.
A man who had spent his life chasing his father's approval finally saw the truth.
Edward never loved power because of wealth.
He loved power because it made him feel untouchable.
And everyone around him became a piece on a chessboard.
Including his own children.
Sebastian whispered:
"All my life..."
Edward looked at him.
"I did everything you asked."
"I became exactly what you wanted."
"And you still never trusted me."
The old billionaire said nothing.
Because it was true.
Suddenly...
the archive screens changed.
A video began playing.
Margaret appeared.
But this time...
she wasn't alone.
A younger Clifford stood beside her.
A memory from years earlier.
Clifford immediately recognized it.
The day before Margaret's final surgery.
The day she told him she would be fine.
The day she smiled while hiding how afraid she was.
Her recorded voice filled the chamber.
"Clifford."
"If you're seeing this..."
"Then Edward has returned."
Everyone became silent.
Margaret continued.
"I need you to understand something."
"You are not Edward's son because of blood."
"You are Edward's son because you are the one person who can choose differently."
Clifford's eyes filled.
She had known.
She had known this moment would come.
"Edward believes intelligence gives him the right to decide the future."
"But he is wrong."
"The future belongs to people who understand responsibility."
The video paused.
Then Margaret said:
"Clifford..."
"The final choice was never about activating Nightfall."
"It was about proving humanity still deserved it."
The room remained silent.
Then Edward spoke.
"She always had a talent for speeches."
Clifford looked at him.
"No."
"She had a talent for seeing the truth."
Edward's expression hardened.
"You think I'm the villain."
"I think you're a man who became so obsessed with being right..."
"...that you forgot how many people you destroyed."
A sudden alarm interrupted them.
WARNING
UNAUTHORIZED EXTERNAL CONNECTION
Walker checked her device.
"Someone is accessing the system."
Caldwell turned.
"From where?"
Walker looked confused.
"From inside."
Everyone looked around.
The chamber.
The archive.
The family.
"No one here is connected."
Then the screen revealed the source.
A name.
Everyone froze.
MARGARET BENNETT
Avery whispered:
"Mom?"
Robert stepped closer.
"That's impossible."
The system displayed:
REMOTE AUTHORIZATION ACTIVE
USER: MARGARET BENNETT
Edward stared at the screen.
For the first time...
real fear appeared in his eyes.
"No."
Clifford noticed.
"You know what this means."
Edward didn't answer.
"What?"
Edward looked at the countdown.
Then at the screen.
"Margaret prepared a second system."
"What system?"
Edward whispered:
"The one designed to destroy Nightfall."
The screen changed.
Margaret appeared again.
Older.
But calm.
"If Edward has activated the project..."
"Then there is only one reason."
"He believes he has won."
A small smile appeared on her face.
"That is his greatest weakness."
The video continued.
"Edward always believed the smartest person in the room should control everything."
"But he never understood one thing."
Margaret looked directly into the camera.
"Love creates plans that power cannot predict."
The countdown stopped.
09:00:00
Everyone stared.
Then another timer appeared.
SELF-DESTRUCTION PROTOCOL
60:00
Caldwell's face changed.
"She built a failsafe."
Robert looked at Edward.
"Can you stop it?"
Edward didn't answer.
Because for the first time...
the man who believed he controlled everything...
was powerless.
Clifford looked at the screen.
At Margaret's final message.
At the family standing around him.
Then Edward spoke quietly.
"She knew."
Everyone looked at him.
Edward's voice became almost a whisper.
"She knew I would come back."
"And she prepared for me."
The chamber shook.
The walls trembled.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
The final battle had begun.
Not between families.
Not between empires.
Between two ideas.

One man who believed the world needed a ruler.
And one woman who believed the world needed a choice.
