Chapter 14 — The Empire Built on a Lie

The underground chamber remained silent after Margaret's final words.
"Sebastian Ashcroft did not inherit his empire."
"He stole it."
The sentence hung in the air like a verdict.
No one looked at Sebastian the same way anymore.
Not even Victor.
The man who had spent fifteen years serving him now stared at him with something that looked dangerously close to hatred.
"You knew."
Victor's voice was low.
"You knew this was what she found."
Sebastian didn't answer.
For once...
the billionaire had no perfect response.
No clever explanation.
No calm smile.
Only silence.
And that silence said more than words ever could.
Clifford stood beside the black device.
His hands were shaking.
Not from fear.
From anger.
"My wife spent years protecting this."
Sebastian looked at him.
"Yes."
"She sacrificed everything."
"Yes."
"And you hunted her."
A pause.
"I never wanted her hurt."
Clifford laughed bitterly.
"You sent men after my family."
"I sent people to retrieve information."
"You destroyed my daughter's wedding."
Sebastian's expression hardened.
"Alan made his own choices."
Everyone looked toward Alan.
He stood near the entrance, pale and defeated.
For the first time, no one saw him as a powerful businessman.
They saw him as what he really was.
A desperate man who had been used.
Alan stepped forward.
"Tell them."
Everyone turned.
Sebastian looked annoyed.
"Excuse me?"
Alan's voice shook.
"Tell them the truth."
"The truth about what?"
"About me."
A cold silence followed.
Alan looked at Avery.
"I thought I was important."
"I thought you chose me because I was smart."
"Successful."
"Powerful."
He swallowed.
"But I was just a tool."
Avery stared at him.
"You knew about my father's ranch."
Alan looked down.
"I knew enough."
"Did you know about this?"
He shook his head.
"No."
"I swear."
Clifford's expression remained cold.
"Why should anyone believe you?"
Alan looked at him.
"Because I finally understand."
"What?"
He looked toward Sebastian.
"People like him don't build partnerships."
"They build weapons."
Robert Hawthorne stepped closer to the device.
"Let's find out what Margaret left."
The screen activated again.
A countdown appeared.
ACCESSING ARCHIVE
VERIFYING FAMILY AUTHORIZATION
Everyone watched as thousands of files appeared.
Financial records.
Government documents.
Scientific reports.
Photographs.
Names.
The first folder opened automatically.
ASHCROFT ORIGIN FILE
Robert clicked it.
A document appeared.
Dated:
1968
The first line read:
CONFIDENTIAL REPORT — PROJECT NIGHTFALL
Clifford felt his stomach tighten.
The report contained the names of everyone involved.
Government officials.
Scientists.
Military personnel.
Private investors.
Then...
a name appeared.
Edward Ashcroft.
Sebastian's father.
Daniel quietly said,
"There it is."
The recording continued.
Margaret appeared again.
Her face was older.
Tired.
But her eyes were still sharp.
"Edward Ashcroft was not a founder."
"He was a thief."
"After discovering Project Nightfall, he used private money and political influence to remove the original researchers."
"He claimed ownership over discoveries that were never his."
The video showed scanned documents.
Signed agreements.
Hidden contracts.
Proof that the Ashcroft family built their fortune by stealing classified research.
Clifford stared.
"My God."
Robert continued reading.
"The Consortium wasn't created to invest."
"It was created to control."
Sebastian finally spoke.
"You don't understand what you're seeing."
Everyone looked at him.
He stepped closer.
"My father did terrible things."
Avery narrowed her eyes.
"But you continued them."
Sebastian didn't deny it.
"Yes."
"Because I learned something."
"What?"
"Power doesn't disappear because someone refuses to use it."
He looked around the chamber.
"Someone would have taken control."
"Someone would have weaponized it."
"So I became the person capable of controlling it."
Daniel shook his head.
"You became exactly what you claimed to prevent."
Sebastian's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But everyone saw it.
Because Daniel had hit the truth.
Suddenly...
the archive screen flashed red.
EXTERNAL BREACH DETECTED
Walker immediately grabbed her weapon.
"What now?"
A technician's voice came through the radio.
"Investigator!"
"Someone accessed the satellite network."
"From where?"
A pause.
Then:
"The ranch."
Everyone looked toward Sebastian.
He shook his head.
"Not me."
Walker didn't believe him.
"Then who?"
The answer came from the device itself.
A new file opened.
A live video feed appeared.
The screen showed...
the underground entrance.
A person standing there.
Everyone froze.
Because the camera angle revealed someone who should not have been there.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a dark suit.
Holding an old photograph.
Clifford stared.
"No..."
His voice broke.
Everyone looked at him.
"Who is that?"
Clifford couldn't answer.
Because he recognized the face.
The face of a man he had seen only once.
In an old family photograph.
Standing beside his father.
Standing beside Daniel.
A man who had supposedly died in 1974.
Daniel whispered:
"Thomas Bennett."
The entire room went silent.
Clifford stepped backward.
"My father?"
But the man on the screen was alive.
Standing beneath the ranch.
Looking directly into the camera.
Then he spoke.
The speakers carried his voice throughout the chamber.
"Clifford."
The old man's voice trembled.
"You finally opened the door."
Clifford couldn't breathe.
"That isn't possible."
The man looked directly into the camera.
"I know what they told you."
"I know what your mother told you."
"I know what Margaret believed."
A pause.
Then:
"But they were all wrong."
Everyone stared.
Thomas Bennett continued.
"The ranch was never hiding a secret."
"The ranch was hiding me."
No one moved.
Not even Sebastian.
Because if Thomas Bennett was alive...
everything they knew about the past was a lie.
The man continued:
"Clifford..."
"I owe you the truth."
The screen flickered.
Then displayed one final message.
ARCHIVE TWO REQUIRED
LOCATION: BENNETT FAMILY BLOODLINE
Daniel's face changed.
"No..."
Robert looked at him.
"What?"
Daniel stared at the screen.
"There's another vault."
Caldwell stepped forward.
"Where?"
Daniel slowly looked toward Clifford.
And answered:
"Under the original Bennett cemetery."
The place where Clifford had buried his daughter.
The place where his family had mourned for decades.
The place Margaret had never allowed anyone to disturb.
Sebastian whispered:
"That's impossible."
Daniel looked at him.
"No."
"That's why you never found it."
"Because you were searching for something hidden."
"But Margaret hid the truth..."
"...where everyone thought there was only grief."
Outside...
the Ashcroft forces suddenly moved.
A new convoy approached the ranch.
This time...
not from the main gate.
From the cemetery road.
Walker received the warning.
Her face went pale.
"We have a problem."
"What?"
She looked toward Clifford.
"They aren't coming for the ranch."
"They're coming for your family's graves."
May you like
And somewhere beneath the Bennett cemetery...
another door was already beginning to open.
