Chapter 17 — The Son of the Enemy

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Not because they didn't have questions.
Because the truth was too large to understand.
The underground chamber beneath the Bennett cemetery felt smaller than before.
The walls seemed closer.
The air heavier.
Clifford Bennett stared at the letter in his hands.
The handwriting was Margaret's.
The woman he loved.
The woman who had shared every sunrise, every struggle, every victory with him.
And yet...
she had hidden the biggest secret of his life.
"Your real father was Edward Ashcroft."
The name echoed through his mind.
Edward Ashcroft.
The founder of the empire that had destroyed families.
The man who had hunted the ranch.
The man responsible for decades of suffering.
The man whose blood ran through his veins.
"No."
Clifford shook his head.
"No."
Avery stepped closer.
"Dad..."
He looked at her.
For the first time in his life, she saw something she had never seen before.
Fear.
Not fear of an enemy.
Fear of losing himself.
"Everything I know..."
His voice cracked.
"Everything I believed..."
Robert carefully took the letter.
"Clifford..."
But Clifford pulled it back.
"No."
"I need to read it."
"All of it."
The letter continued.
"If you are reading this, then the final door has opened."
"I prayed this day would never come."
"Not because you deserve a lie."
"Because you deserved a peaceful life."
Clifford closed his eyes.
Margaret's words felt like a conversation from beyond time.
"Edward Ashcroft was brilliant."
"He was also dangerous."
"He believed knowledge belonged to whoever could control it."
"Your mother discovered his plans and tried to expose him."
"That decision changed everything."
Clifford looked up.
"My mother?"
No one answered.
Margaret continued.
"Your mother was the first person Edward Ashcroft ever truly feared."
"She knew his empire was built on stolen discoveries and stolen lives."
"When she tried to reveal the truth..."
"Edward tried to erase her."
Avery covered her mouth.
Samuel Bennett looked down.
"I knew."
Everyone turned.
Clifford stared.
"You knew?"
Samuel nodded.
"Not everything."
"But enough."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
The old man's face showed regret.
"Because your mother begged me not to."
Clifford stepped closer.
"She knew?"
"Yes."
"She knew Edward was my father?"
Samuel nodded.
"She discovered it years after your birth."
The pain on Clifford's face deepened.
"Then why stay silent?"
Samuel looked at him.
"Because Margaret believed one thing."
"What?"
"Blood does not create a family."
"Love does."
Sebastian Ashcroft stood apart from everyone.
Quiet.
Almost defeated.
For years, he had believed he understood the world.
Money.
Power.
Influence.
Control.
But now...
the man he had spent years trying to destroy was his own blood.
His own family.
Catherine looked at him.
"You knew Edward."
Sebastian nodded.
"He raised me."
"Then tell me."
Her voice trembled.
"Was he always like this?"
Sebastian looked away.
"No."
The answer surprised everyone.
"No?"
Sebastian shook his head.
"When I was young, my father wasn't a monster."
"He was a man who believed he could fix the world."
"What happened?"
Sebastian looked toward the archive.
"He discovered something he couldn't control."
"The power changed him."
General Caldwell stepped forward.
"Enough history."
Everyone looked at him.
"The most important question is..."
"What is Project Nightfall?"
Robert opened the archive system.
The answer appeared.
PROJECT NIGHTFALL: ORIGIN FILE
A document loaded.
Caldwell read silently.
Then his expression changed.
"What?"
Walker asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he handed the tablet to her.
She read.
Then froze.
"What is it?"
She looked at Clifford.
"Your father wasn't protecting a weapon."
"Then what?"
Walker swallowed.
"He was protecting a discovery."
"A discovery that could change the future of energy, medicine, and technology."
Robert frowned.
"Then why hide it?"
Caldwell looked toward Sebastian.
"Because Edward Ashcroft wanted ownership."
"He wanted control."
"He believed whoever controlled the discovery controlled humanity."
Suddenly...
a loud crash echoed above them.
Everyone looked upward.
Walker immediately grabbed her radio.
"Report."
Static.
Then a frightened voice.
"Investigator..."
"We have a breach."
"What kind?"
A pause.
Then:
"The Ashcroft soldiers aren't attacking."
"They're retreating."
Everyone exchanged confused looks.
"Why?"
The deputy answered:
"Because someone else arrived."
Outside...
another convoy had entered Bennett Ranch.
But these vehicles were different.
No Ashcroft emblem.
No government markings.
Just plain black cars.
Dozens of them.
A group of men and women stepped out.
Not soldiers.
Lawyers.
Executives.
Politicians.
Judges.
People from every level of power.
Walker stared through the camera.
"Who are they?"
Sebastian looked at the screen.
His face changed.
"No..."
Clifford noticed.
"You know them."
Sebastian whispered:
"The people behind the Consortium."
The doors of the underground chamber opened.
A man entered.
Older.
Elegant.
Carrying no weapon.
He wore a simple black suit.
But everyone reacted when they saw him.
Even Sebastian.
The man smiled.
"Sebastian."
Sebastian's voice was cold.
"Father."
The room froze.
Clifford stared.
"Your father?"
Sebastian nodded slowly.
The impossible continued.
Edward Ashcroft.
The man everyone believed had died twenty-five years earlier.
Was alive.
And standing beneath Bennett Ranch.
Edward looked around the chamber.
His eyes stopped on Clifford.
For a long moment...
he said nothing.
Then he smiled.
"So."
"My son."
"After all these years..."
"We finally meet."
Clifford's fists clenched.
"You tried to destroy my family."
Edward looked genuinely confused.
"Destroy?"
"No."
"I protected you."
Clifford laughed bitterly.
"Protected me?"
Edward stepped closer.
"You have no idea what you are."
The words chilled everyone.
Edward continued:
"You think you're a rancher."
"You think you're Thomas Bennett's son."
"You think you're a victim."
He looked directly into Clifford's eyes.
"But you are the only person on Earth capable of completing Project Nightfall."
Silence.
Avery stepped between them.
"Stay away from him."
Edward smiled.
"Still protective."
He looked at her.
"Margaret raised you well."
Clifford froze.
"You knew Margaret."
Edward nodded.
"She was the only woman who ever defeated me."
A pause.
"And the only woman who ever betrayed me."
The archive system suddenly activated.
A new message appeared.
FINAL BLOODLINE CONFIRMATION REQUIRED
Everyone looked at the screen.
Caldwell frowned.
"What now?"
The system displayed a single sentence:
THE CREATOR MUST RETURN.
Edward smiled.
Everyone looked at him.
Clifford's face changed.
"No..."
Edward stepped toward the machine.
"I wondered when it would recognize me."
The system scanned him.
Then:
ORIGINAL CREATOR IDENTIFIED.
The underground chamber went silent.
Edward looked at Clifford.
"You see?"
"This was never your inheritance."
He smiled.
"It was mine."
Then the system displayed the final message.
PROJECT NIGHTFALL WILL NOW BEGIN.
And beneath it...
a countdown started.
10:00:00
Everyone stared.
Ten hours.
May you like
Until something happened.
Something Margaret had spent her entire life trying to prevent.
