Chapter 4 â The Last Secret

Chapter 4 â The Last Secret
Eric suddenly fell to his knees.
"Claire..."
His voice cracked.
"I'm sorry."
"No."
I looked down at him.
"You're sorry because you got caught."
His shoulders shook.
"I made a mistake."
"For sixteen months?"
Grant calmly corrected him.
"Eighteen."
Eric closed his eyes.
Grant opened the final section of the red folder.
"There is one last matter."
He removed financial records.
Hidden accounts.
Property transfers.
Luxury purchases.
Eric slowly looked up.
"What is that?"
"The money you stole from your wife's inheritance."
Every guest stared.
Grant continued.
"During the past two years, Mr. Collins secretly transferred nearly 1.8 million dollars into shell companies controlled by himself."
I wasn't surprised.
"I already knew."
Eric's face twisted in disbelief.
"You..."
"I discovered it months ago."
Grant smiled slightly.
"Which is why every transfer after March was monitored."
Another document appeared.
A federal financial investigator stepped forward from another table.
He displayed his badge.
"Mr. Collins, you're now under investigation for fraud, embezzlement, and financial conspiracy."
Eric's entire body went limp.
Security officers entered quietly.
Nobody resisted.
Nobody needed to.
As they escorted him away, he looked back one final time.
"Claire... please..."
