Chapter 3 â The Father No One Expected

Chapter 3 â The Father No One Expected
Daniel took a slow breath before speaking.
"I dated Natalie for almost a year."
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Natalie shook her head violently.
"No... don't..."
He ignored her.
"She told me she had left Eric."
Eric stared at Natalie.
"You said we were building a future together."
Natalie couldn't answer.
Daniel continued.
"Then she disappeared."
He looked directly at me.
"Three months ago she called asking for money."
Grant handed Daniel another document.
Bank transfers.
Hotel receipts.
Phone records.
Every payment Daniel had made to Natalie.
"I refused," Daniel said quietly.
"Two weeks later she told me she was pregnant."
The room fell silent again.
Eric's breathing became uneven.
"You weren't sure whose baby it was."
Natalie burst into tears.
"I was scared!"
"No," I answered calmly.
"You were calculating."
She turned toward me.
"You don't understand!"
"I understand perfectly."
I stepped closer.
"You wanted my husband."
"You wanted my life."
"You wanted everyone to believe you had won."
Natalie collapsed into a chair.
"I never meant..."
"You meant every decision you made."
Our mother finally stood.
She looked from Natalie...
to Eric...
then to me.
One slap echoed across the ballroom.
Not mine.
Mother's.
The sound froze everyone.
"How could you?" she whispered.
Natalie sobbed uncontrollably.
Our father silently removed his wedding ring.
Forty-three years of marriage.
He placed it on the table.
"I failed both my daughters."
His voice broke.
"But only one of them chose betrayal."
He walked to my side.
Without saying another word...
May you like
He stood beside me.
Exactly where a father should.
