CHAPTER 2 – The Phone Call That Changed Everything
Julia held the phone to her ear while the sting on her cheek still burned.
No one paid attention.
Margaret continued crying dramatically.
David stood beside his mother, convinced he had won.
"Hello?"
A calm male voice answered.
"It's me," Julia said quietly. "I'm ready."
There was a brief silence.
Then came the reply.
"I'll be there in five minutes."
Julia ended the call.
David laughed.
"Calling your parents?" he sneered.
"They can't save you."
Julia said nothing.
She simply wrapped her arm around Mia, who was still shaking.
Five minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.
Three men in dark suits walked inside.
Behind them came an older gentleman with silver hair.
The room fell silent again.
Margaret frowned.
"Who are these people?"
The older man ignored her.
Instead, he walked directly to Julia.
"I'm sorry we were late," he said.
Then, to everyone's shock, he bowed his head slightly.
David's face turned pale.
"Dad... what are you doing?"
The older man looked at him with disappointment.
"I'm not here as your father."
"I'm here as Chairman of Miller Holdings."
The room erupted in whispers.
No one at the wedding had known the truth.
For ten years, Julia had quietly served as Chief Legal Officer of the family corporation.
She had helped build the company beside David's father.
But she never wanted the attention.
David had always taken the credit.
Until tonight.
The chairman slowly turned toward the guests.
"I have just witnessed my granddaughter assaulted."
"My daughter-in-law humiliated."
"And my own son striking his wife."
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
"I will not allow anyone carrying my family name to behave this way."
David suddenly realized what Julia's phone call had meant.
