Chapter 8 - Richard Vale

Police found Gordon’s car abandoned.
Richard Vale was not inside.
Neither was Gordon.
At 6:20 that evening, Claire received another unknown call.
She put it on speaker.
“Hello, Claire.”
Gordon’s voice.
David stood.
Mark signaled for silence.
Claire asked:
“Where is Richard?”
“Safe.”
“You kidnapped an elderly man.”
“He came voluntarily.”
“Then let me speak to him.”
A pause.
An older voice came through.
“Mrs. Mercer?”
Claire looked at David.
“Mr. Vale?”
“Yes.”
“Are you being held against your will?”
“No.”
Gordon returned.
“Happy?”
“No.”
Claire remained calm.
“What do you want?”
“The red ledger.”
“We don’t have it.”
“I believe you.”
“Then why call?”
“Because you are asking the wrong question.”
“What question should I ask?”
Gordon’s voice softened.
“Why did Samuel create Schedule C?”
Claire frowned.
“To expose you.”
Gordon laughed.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“To protect me.”
Everyone went silent.
Mark shook his head.
“Bullshit.”
Gordon apparently heard him.
“Hello, Mark.”
“Come back and explain it to police.”
“Soon.”
Then Gordon continued.
“Samuel’s problem was never that I acquired ownership.”
“What was it?”
“That Laura discovered how he had acquired his.”
Claire remembered the hidden land.
Political information.
False valuations.
Illegal structures.
Gordon continued.
“If Laura exposed Schedule C, Mercer Industries would have faced criminal investigation.”
“So Samuel protected you.”
“He protected himself.”
“Then why create the audit?”
“Because he wanted leverage over me.”
David spoke.
“He wanted to make sure you never challenged his family.”
“Correct.”
Claire understood.
Samuel built a time bomb.
As long as Gordon stayed loyal, Schedule C remained hidden.
If Gordon moved against the Mercers, a future generational audit would expose everyone.
Laura intended to trigger the bomb early.
Gordon stopped her.
“Did you kill her?”
Silence.
Then:
“No.”
“You grabbed her while she was driving.”
“I grabbed her bag.”
“She crashed because of you.”
“Yes.”
“You left her.”
Gordon’s voice became colder.
“Henry left her.”
David surged toward the phone.
“You bastard.”
“Ask your father how long he stood beside that car before calling a second ambulance.”
David froze.
Claire looked at him.
Gordon continued.
“Ask Henry what Laura begged him to do.”
The line ended.
Henry arrived at the hotel twenty minutes later.
David confronted him immediately.
“What did Mom say?”
Henry stopped.
“David—”
“What did she say at the crash?”
Henry stared at Claire.
Then at Mark.
Finally, he sat.
“She was conscious.”
Mark closed his eyes.
“For how long?”
“Minutes.”
“What did she say?”
“She said Gordon caused it.”
“And?”
“She told me to call police.”
David’s voice cracked.
“Did you?”
“Not immediately.”
“Why?”
“Samuel called.”
Silence.
“My father told me federal investigators were already watching Mercer.”
Mark stared.
“So you waited.”
Henry nodded.
“How long?”
“I don’t know.”
“HOW LONG?”
“Eleven minutes.”
David turned away.
Claire felt sick.
Eleven minutes.
In a boardroom, nothing.
Beside a wrecked vehicle, everything.
“Why?”
Henry’s eyes filled.
“I thought paramedics were already coming.”
“But you protected the company first.”
“Yes.”
Mark laughed bitterly.
“Mom’s letter was right.”
Henry looked at him.
“She knew you.”
Henry broke.
Not theatrically.
Quietly.
His shoulders collapsed.
“I have lived with it every day.”
David stared at him.
“Good.”
Then Claire’s phone buzzed.
A video message.
Richard Vale appeared.
Alive.
Sitting inside what looked like an old motel room.
He spoke directly to the camera.
“Claire Mercer, if you are seeing this, Gordon asked me to tell you the truth.”
David muttered:
“Don’t trust it.”
Richard continued.
“Gordon Shaw is guilty of many things.”
A pause.
“But he did not plant the wire.”
Claire stared.
“He did not contaminate your supplements.”
Mark frowned.
Richard leaned toward the camera.
“Someone else is using his plan to hide a separate one.”
The video ended.
Seconds later another file arrived.
Security footage from Mercer House.
Timestamp:
the morning of the tripwire.
5:48 a.m.
A figure entered the foyer.
Thin.
Female.
Wearing a hood.
She approached the staircase.
Claire leaned closer.
The woman removed the hood.
Rosa gasped.
David stared.
Mark whispered:
“No way.”
Claire recognized her.
Beth Briggs.
Laura Mercer’s former assistant.
The woman who claimed she had been attacked because she knew too much.
Beth carried the steel wire.
May you like
She knelt beside the staircase.
And began tying it into place.
