Chapter 11 - Celeste Runs

Celeste’s bedroom at Mercer House was empty.

Her passport was gone.

Two suitcases missing.

Her phone had been left beneath her pillow.

Inside the phone were deleted messages recovered by technicians.

Most were with Gordon.

Some were older than Claire’s marriage.

But one conversation changed everything.

CELESTE: You promised nobody would be physically hurt.

GORDON: Laura taught you what promises are worth.

CELESTE: Claire is pregnant.

GORDON: That is precisely why timing matters.

Then another:

CELESTE: I will not do what you did eighteen years ago.

Gordon:

You already did.

Claire stared.

“What did she already do?”

No one knew.

Police found Celeste six hours later.

Not at an airport.

Not a hotel.

Inside the old Mercer greenhouse.

Unconscious.

Her wrists tied.

A head wound.

Beside her:

the empty supplement container.

Written on the glass:

SHE FAILED AGAIN.

When Celeste woke, she asked for Henry.

He refused.

Claire went instead.

Celeste looked at her.

“You should hate me.”

“I don’t have enough information yet.”

Despite everything, Celeste smiled weakly.

“You really aren’t like them.”

“No.”

Claire sat.

“Did you burn Gordon’s cottage?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To destroy Eleanor’s papers.”

“On Gordon’s orders?”

“Yes.”

“Why obey him?”

Celeste closed her eyes.

“Because he has owned me for thirty years.”

“That sounds dramatic.”

“It is accurate.”

Celeste explained.

She and Gordon shared a father.

Their mother died young.

Gordon protected Celeste as a teenager.

Paid for school.

Introduced her to powerful circles.

Then involved her in foundation fraud.

By the time she realized how deep it went, her own crimes guaranteed her silence.

“Why marry Henry?”

“Gordon wanted someone inside the family.”

Claire stared.

“You married Henry as part of Gordon’s scheme?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Celeste’s eyes filled.

“I loved him.”

Claire believed her.

That made everything uglier.

“You helped Gordon destroy Laura’s evidence.”

“Yes.”

“You helped hide that he was in the car.”

“Yes.”

“Did you touch her supplements?”

“I delivered them to Henry.”

“Did you know what was inside?”

“No.”

“Who gave them to you?”

“Gordon’s assistant.”

“Name.”

“Martin Keene.”

Detective Torres checked.

Martin Keene had worked for Gordon for fourteen years.

He was currently missing.

Claire asked:

“Did Gordon order you to attack me?”

“No.”

“Did he order the car tampering?”

“I don’t know.”

“Why burn Eleanor’s papers?”

“He said the codicil would destroy everything.”

“For him.”

“For all of us.”

“No.”

Claire leaned closer.

“That is the lie he keeps selling you.”

Celeste looked away.

“Did you know Eleanor left everything to my baby?”

“No.”

Claire watched her reaction.

Genuine shock.

Then Celeste began crying.

“That means Gordon has nothing.”

“Exactly.”

Celeste looked terrified.

“You don’t understand.”

“What?”

“If Gordon learns the codicil survived…”

“He’ll come after me.”

“No.”

Celeste reached for Claire’s wrist.

“He will come after everyone.”

Claire held her gaze.

“He already has.”

Celeste shook her head violently.

“No.”

“You haven’t seen him desperate.”

Claire remembered the wire.

The medication.

The fire.

“What does desperate look like?”

Celeste whispered:

“Like Laura.”

Before Claire could respond, the hospital lights flickered.

Then went dark.

Backup power restored hallway illumination.

A nurse screamed.

Detective Torres rushed in.

“Move!”

Someone had entered through a restricted stairwell.

Police searched.

No intruder.

But in Celeste’s room—

a bouquet had appeared.

White lilies.

The same flowers used at Laura Mercer’s funeral.

Attached card:

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED LOYAL.

Celeste stared at it.

May you like

Then whispered:

“He knows.”
