Chapter 15 - Claire Sets the Trap

Claire called Gordon herself.

“You wanted me incapacitated.”

Silence.

Then:

“You’re learning.”

“I have Samuel’s affidavit.”

Gordon laughed.

“No, federal investigators do.”

“I have the only complete copy of Schedule C.”

That got his attention.

Mark looked at Claire from across the room.

The claim was partly false.

They had copies.

But Gordon could not know.

“What do you want?” he asked.

“A trade.”

“For what?”

“You surrender.”

He laughed.

“Goodbye, Claire.”

“Eleanor’s codicil was witnessed by Richard Vale.”

Silence.

“You know that.”

“Yes.”

“Then your claim is dead.”

“Not necessarily.”

“How?”

Gordon paused.

“You are bluffing.”

Claire smiled.

“You’ve spent thirty years betting this family will protect itself.”

She looked at Henry.

“You were right.”

Henry lowered his eyes.

“Until now.”

Gordon remained silent.

Claire continued.

“We are releasing Samuel’s crimes too.”

That changed everything.

“You wouldn’t.”

“We already gave them to prosecutors.”

“No.”

“For once, Gordon, nobody is protecting Mercer Industries.”

Silence.

Then Claire heard his breathing.

Anger.

Actual anger.

The first time she had broken through his composure.

“You ungrateful little woman.”

David’s jaw tightened.

Claire remained calm.

“There you are.”

Gordon hung up.

Mark smiled.

“You got him.”

“No.”

Claire stared at the phone.

“I made him angry.”

“That’s useful.”

“He’ll move.”

He did.

Two hours later, Gordon accessed an offshore document repository.

Federal cyber investigators traced it.

He downloaded files connected to a private company named Marrow Holdings.

Mark searched.

His expression changed.

“What?”

“Marrow owns the debt that’s squeezing Mercer.”

David leaned closer.

“Gordon owns our lender?”

“Indirectly.”

Claire understood.

The credit crisis was engineered.

Gordon had purchased distressed Mercer debt over years.

Now he was using it to force Henry into activating the emergency clause.

“Can we expose it?”

“Yes.”

“If we do?”

“His leverage collapses.”

They sent the evidence to the board.

Then to regulators.

Then to the lender consortium.

Within hours, Mercer’s credit freeze was paused.

Gordon’s greatest immediate weapon disappeared.

Henry sat quietly.

“He planned this for decades.”

Claire looked at him.

“And you helped by refusing to look.”

“I know.”

This time Henry did not defend himself.

Progress.

Then Detective Torres received unexpected news.

Martin Keene wanted to cooperate.

His lawyer negotiated.

In exchange for consideration, Martin would testify.

His first statement:

Gordon ordered surveillance.

Gordon directed the supplement switch.

Gordon ordered car sabotage.

Gordon arranged forged medical filings.

Gordon orchestrated the emergency control petition.

But when Torres asked whether Gordon had ordered Claire killed—

Martin answered:

“No.”

Claire stared.

“What?”

“He specifically said not to kill her.”

David looked furious.

“He poisoned her.”

“Enough to cause instability.”

“That could kill her.”

“Yes.”

“But his written instructions were incapacity, not death.”

Claire thought back to the anonymous phone call.

Now we have to do it another way.

That voice had sounded distorted.

Maybe not Gordon.

“Who made the threatening calls?”

Martin frowned.

“I assumed Beth.”

Beth denied several of them.

Torres checked call routing.

Some came from equipment Martin controlled.

Others did not.

Claire felt another layer opening.

“Someone else wanted me dead.”

Mark looked at her.

“Who?”

They went back to motive.

If Claire died before the transition, Gordon’s emergency plan became harder, not easier.

Beth needed Claire alive long enough to expose the ledger.

Mark had been framed.

David lost power if she died.

Henry risked everything.

Celeste kept temporary trustee control.

Claire stopped.

“Celeste.”

David shook his head.

“She admitted Gordon controlled her.”

“And Gordon said not to kill me.”

Mark stared.

“Celeste benefits if the pregnancy never triggers.”

Claire remembered the first anonymous message Henry received:

THE WRONG HEIR IS ABOUT TO BE BORN.

Not Gordon’s language.

Personal.

Then Detective Torres entered.

“We recovered deleted drafts from Celeste’s phone.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

One unsent message to Gordon:

You said the child could be prevented without Claire suffering.

Another:

If you won’t do it, I will.

David went pale.

Celeste had not merely been Gordon’s reluctant accomplice.

At some point, she had decided Claire’s baby itself was the threat.

And she was willing to act independently.

Then Rosa screamed from the hallway.

They ran.

Celeste’s police guard lay unconscious.

Her hospital room was empty.

On the bed—

a note.

I WILL NOT SPEND THE REST OF MY LIFE PAYING FOR LAURA.

May you like

And beneath it:

THE TRUST ENDS TONIGHT.
