Chapter 2 - THE IV BAG

The hospital moved faster once the suspicious IV was discovered.

A rapid-response physician arrived within minutes.

Dr. Priya Shah ordered the line removed, sealed, and transferred directly to hospital security.

Blood samples were taken from Elena.

The fetal monitor was attached immediately.

A rapid heartbeat filled the room.

Elena stared at the screen.

“Is my baby all right?”

Dr. Shah studied the tracing.

“For the moment, yes.”

“For the moment?”

“I don’t want to frighten you.”

“Then don’t lie to me.”

Dr. Shah looked at her.

“We don’t know what was in that bag.”

Mark moved closer.

“This is getting absurd.”

Officer Rivera stepped in front of him.

“Stay back.”

“That’s my wife.”

“She has not asked you to approach her.”

Mark stared at Elena.

For a moment, the room disappeared.

She remembered the man she had married.

The man who once drove six hours through a snowstorm because she had mentioned missing him.

The man who brought coffee to her office every Friday.

The man who stood at their wedding and promised, in front of two hundred people, that she would never face anything alone.

She wondered when that man had disappeared.

Then another thought came.

Maybe he never existed.

“Mark,” Elena said.

He softened his expression.

“Yes?”

“Did you know someone changed my IV?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“No.”

Vanessa turned.

“Why are you answering for me?”

Mark’s eyes hardened.

“Because this has become ridiculous.”

“Interesting.”

Elena watched them.

Vanessa looked furious.

Not at Elena.

At Mark.

That mattered.

Daniel Harris returned with a clear evidence bag containing the removed IV.

“We’ve secured the medication room footage.”

Mark’s lawyer instincts surfaced.

“I want copies preserved.”

“They will be.”

“And no one is to release private footage without authorization.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“You don’t control hospital evidence.”

“I’m protecting my wife.”

Elena spoke quietly.

“Stop saying that.”

Mark looked at her.

“What?”

“Stop saying you’re protecting me.”

His face tightened.

Elena continued.

“You tried to have me transferred to a psychiatric facility.”

“I was trying to get you help.”

“Against my will.”

“You needed evaluation.”

“Based on what?”

“You accused Vanessa and me of having an affair.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Officer Rivera looked between them.

Elena almost admired Mark’s mistake.

He had said too much.

“I never mentioned an affair to anyone in this room.”

Silence.

Carol looked toward Mark.

Neither had Elena.

Until now.

Mark realized it too late.

Officer Rivera stepped closer.

“So there is an affair?”

“No.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Don’t.”

Mark’s head turned.

“Vanessa.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t get to do this.”

“Stop talking.”

“You promised me—”

“Vanessa.”

The sharpness in his voice silenced her.

But the damage was done.

Elena felt surprisingly little.

No heartbreak.

No jealousy.

Only confirmation.

She had spent months questioning herself because Mark told her she was imagining things.

The perfume on his coat.

The dinner charges.

The hotel receipt.

The late-night calls.

Vanessa’s familiarity with their home.

Elena had not been paranoid.

She had been observant.

Officer Rivera asked Vanessa directly.

“Are you in a romantic relationship with Mr. Lawson?”

“I want an attorney.”

Mark closed his eyes.

Elena looked at Carol.

“Can I call my sister?”

“Of course.”

Mark stepped forward.

“Elena, please.”

There it was again.

That word.

Please.

Mark only used it when he had lost control.

She dialed Rebecca.

Her sister answered on the second ring.

“Elena?”

The relief in Rebecca’s voice nearly broke her.

“Where are you?”

“At the hospital.”

“What happened?”

“I need you here.”

“I’m leaving now.”

“No questions?”

“I’ll ask them when I’m beside you.”

Elena swallowed.

“Bring the Carter Trust documents.”

Mark’s head snapped toward her.

“What?”

Rebecca paused.

“The originals?”

“Yes.”

Mark moved closer.

“Elena.”

She held his gaze.

“Bring everything Dad left with you.”

Rebecca understood.

“I’ll be there as fast as I can.”

Elena ended the call.

Mark looked furious.

“What are you doing?”

“Protecting myself.”

“You’re involving your family in private marital issues.”

“You forged a medical transfer.”

“You don’t know that.”

“You slept with Vanessa.”

His silence confirmed it.

“And someone replaced my IV.”

“We don’t know who.”

“Then why are you so afraid of my sister bringing the trust?”

He had no answer.

Vanessa did.

“Because your father hated him.”

Mark turned toward her.

“Shut up.”

Elena stared.

“My father?”

Vanessa realized she had revealed something Mark never wanted Elena to know.

“What does my father have to do with this?”

Vanessa looked away.

Elena’s father, Thomas Carter, had died eleven months earlier.

He built Carter Biologics from a two-room laboratory into a pharmaceutical research company worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

He had never trusted Mark.

Elena thought it was because her father was protective.

Their final argument happened two weeks before his death.

Thomas warned Elena that Mark was “interested in the wrong inheritance.”

She accused him of insulting her marriage.

They did not speak again.

He died from a sudden heart attack during a business trip.

The guilt had followed Elena every day since.

“What did my father know?”

Mark’s voice went cold.

“Nothing.”

Vanessa laughed again.

This time there was desperation in it.

“That’s not true.”

“Vanessa.”

“He had investigators looking into you.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Mark lunged toward Vanessa.

Officer Rivera pushed him backward.

“Do not move.”

Vanessa’s face had gone pale.

She knew she had crossed a line.

Elena did too.

“What investigation?”

Vanessa stared at Mark.

“He found money missing.”

Mark’s voice became dangerous.

“Say another word and you destroy yourself.”

Vanessa looked at him.

Then at Elena.

Something changed.

The partnership between them fractured.

“He already planned to blame me,” Vanessa whispered.

Elena leaned forward.

“Blame you for what?”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

A nurse rushed through the door.

“Dr. Shah needs Mrs. Lawson immediately.”

Elena’s heart stopped.

“What happened?”

“The toxicology screen is back.”

Everyone turned.

The nurse looked at the sealed IV bag.

Then at Elena.

“There was a sedative in your blood that was never ordered for you.”

Carol’s hand flew to her mouth.

Dr. Shah appeared behind the nurse.

“There’s more.”

Elena gripped the mattress.

“What?”

“The amount was not enough to cause permanent harm.”

Relief came too early.

“But it could make you confused, disoriented, and difficult to assess accurately.”

Officer Rivera looked toward the psychiatric transfer form.

Elena did too.

The plan suddenly became visible.

Drug her.

Document confusion.

Declare her unstable.

Transfer her.

Mark’s face had lost all color.

Dr. Shah continued.

“And according to pharmacy records, the medication was ordered under Dr. Keller’s credentials.”

Carol stared at Mark.

“The doctor you met this morning.”

Daniel’s phone rang again.

He listened.

Then he looked at Officer Rivera.

“Police may want to secure Dr. Keller’s office.”

“Why?”

“He just left the hospital.”

“When?”

“Four minutes ago.”

“With what?”

May you like

Daniel looked directly at Elena.

“Your complete medical file.”
