Chapter 10 - NORTH POINT

North Point had been built for marine-biotechnology research twenty years earlier.

Thomas shut it down after a funding scandal.

Evelyn Reed had been chief financial officer at the time.

She resigned before investigators could prove misconduct.

Vanessa had followed directly in her footsteps.

The conspiracy was older than Elena’s marriage.

Older than Mark’s career.

Older than Aurora.

Robert and Evelyn had been partners for decades.

Thomas had spent years unknowingly building a company beside people who believed loyalty was merely another asset to sell.

Police prepared a rescue operation.

Elena remained in the hospital.

She hated that.

Every instinct told her to do something.

Detective Brooks reminded her that keeping herself and her unborn child safe was doing something.

At 9:03 p.m., tactical officers approached North Point from the water.

A second team moved through the woods.

Electricity inside the building suddenly failed.

Robert knew they were coming.

Lieutenant Shaw had probably monitored police channels.

Shots were heard inside.

Elena watched updates through Daniel Harris’s office.

Rebecca held her hand.

Dr. Pierce joined through secure video.

Seven minutes passed.

Then twelve.

Then Detective Brooks received the first radio update.

“Chloe secured.”

Pierce collapsed against his pillow.

His daughter was alive.

“Nathan?”

Brooks listened.

“Not located.”

“Robert?”

“Not located.”

“Vanessa’s mother?”

“Arrested.”

Evelyn Reed had surrendered.

Shaw escaped through a maintenance tunnel.

Robert was gone.

Nathan was gone with him.

Police found blood inside the tunnel.

They did not know whose.

At the end of the tunnel was a small dock.

A boat was missing.

Coast Guard units began searching the bay.

At 11:18 p.m., they found the boat drifting without lights.

Lieutenant Shaw was inside.

Dead.

A gunshot wound marked his chest.

Nathan and Robert were gone.

There were two sets of bloody footprints leading to the stern.

No bodies were recovered.

Evelyn Reed refused to speak.

Vanessa, however, reacted differently when she learned her mother had been arrested.

“She’ll blame me.”

Detective Brooks sat across from her.

“Will she be telling the truth?”

“No.”

“Then help yourself.”

Vanessa looked toward the mirror.

She knew Elena might be watching.

“My mother taught Robert how to move money.”

“She taught you too.”

“Yes.”

“When did Mark become involved?”

“After law school.”

“Did you recruit him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you encourage him to marry Elena?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“That was Robert’s idea.”

Elena felt the statement like a slap.

Robert.

Her own uncle.

“Why?”

“Thomas changed the Aurora trust after he discovered Robert’s licensing scheme.”

“He named Elena sole beneficiary.”

“Robert needed access through her.”

“Why Mark?”

“Because Mark was ambitious enough.”

“And you were sleeping with him.”

“Yes.”

There was no shame now.

Only exhaustion.

“Did you love him?”

Vanessa laughed.

“Mark loves whoever makes him feel powerful.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I thought I did.”

“What changed?”

“Elena.”

Vanessa’s expression turned bitter.

“He was supposed to pretend.”

“But?”

“He started caring about her.”

Elena almost scoffed.

Vanessa saw the reaction through the mirror.

“I know you don’t believe that.”

“No.”

“He delayed everything because of you.”

“He let you keep working.”

“He refused to drug you until Robert threatened him.”

Elena stared.

This was not redemption.

Mark’s moments of hesitation did not erase what he did.

“Did Mark know Robert caused Thomas’s death?” Brooks asked.

“Not initially.”

“When did he learn?”

“After the funeral.”

“Why stay involved?”

“Fear.”

“Money.”

“Both.”

Vanessa looked into the mirror.

“Mark’s problem was never that he didn’t have a conscience.”

“It was that he always found a price high enough to ignore it.”

That sentence Elena believed.

Vanessa agreed to testify in exchange for consideration.

She identified offshore accounts.

Hidden servers.

Corporate executives.

She also gave police Robert’s emergency property list.

There were five locations.

Four were empty.

The fifth was a cabin in Maine.

A surveillance team reached it the next afternoon.

Nathan Cole was inside.

Alive.

He had a gunshot wound in his shoulder.

Robert was gone.

Nathan had escaped during the boat trip.

He swam to shore and contacted an old friend.

“Why didn’t you call police?” Brooks asked later.

“Because one police officer already kept me imprisoned for a year.”

Fair answer.

Nathan was transported under federal protection.

His testimony transformed the case.

He had copies of Thomas’s original investigation.

He also had something no one else possessed.

A recording from the night Thomas died.

Nathan had hidden a microphone inside Thomas’s hotel suite.

The audio captured the entire meeting.

Vanessa asking Thomas to stop the audit.

Thomas refusing.

A glass being poured.

Thomas saying the drink tasted strange.

Robert’s voice entering through a phone call.

Then Thomas collapsing.

Vanessa panicking.

Mark arriving.

And finally Robert giving one instruction through the phone.

“Leave him.”

Elena listened once.

She never listened again.

Thomas’s final audible words came weakly from the floor.

“Elena will know.”

Mark asked what he meant.

Thomas whispered.

“She knows who she is.”

He died believing his daughter would eventually trust herself enough to see the truth.

That broke Elena.

But it also freed her.

She had spent years believing her last argument disappointed him.

His final thought had not been anger.

It had been faith.

The district attorney announced murder charges against Robert Carter.

Vanessa faced manslaughter, conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, and numerous other charges.

Mark faced related charges for failing to obtain help and participating in the cover-up.

Dr. Keller’s deal collapsed after evidence showed he knew the drug could be dangerous to Thomas’s heart.

Evelyn Reed was charged with racketeering and financial crimes.

One person remained missing.

Robert.

Three days passed.

Then Elena received a letter at the hospital.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of Thomas holding Elena as a newborn.

On the back, Robert had written:

YOUR FATHER ALWAYS CHOSE YOU OVER ME.

Below it:

NOW YOU GET TO CHOOSE WHAT YOU’RE WILLING TO LOSE.

May you like

And beneath that was tomorrow’s date.

The date Elena was scheduled to be discharged.
