Chapter 12 - MARK CAME BACK

Twenty hours after Mark disappeared, Elena woke to someone knocking on the window.
Her room was six floors above the ground.
She froze.
Then the knock came again.
From the interior observation window beside the door.
Mark stood in the hallway.
Blood covered his shirt.
Police officers surrounded him.
His hands were raised.
Elena stared.
Detective Brooks entered.
“He turned himself in downstairs.”
“What happened?”
“He claims Robert abducted him during the fake transfer.”
“Do you believe him?”
“I believe he’s injured.”
That was not an answer.
Mark asked to see Elena.
She refused.
Then he gave Brooks one sentence.
“Robert is coming for her tonight.”
Elena agreed to a monitored conversation.
Mark was treated first.
The blood came from a cut along his ribs and a wound on his forehead.
He appeared on video from a secure room.
“What happened?”
“Robert’s people intercepted the transport.”
“You weren’t supposed to be transported.”
“The guard was paid.”
“By Robert?”
“Yes.”
“Why take you?”
“He needed the Aurora authorization.”
“I have it.”
“He thought I knew how to force you to give it.”
Elena almost laughed.
“You spent years doing exactly that.”
Mark lowered his eyes.
“I told him you wouldn’t.”
“What did he do?”
“He wanted me to call you.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I knew what he would do after he got Aurora.”
“Suddenly you developed morals?”
“No.”
Mark looked at the camera.
“I finally understood there was nothing left to save.”
“What does that mean?”
“My career is gone.”
“My marriage is gone.”
“My freedom is probably gone.”
“So now you care?”
“No.”
His answer surprised her.
“I should have cared before there were consequences.”
Elena said nothing.
Mark continued.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
“I’m telling you Robert has stopped caring whether he survives.”
That mattered.
A man planning an escape behaved differently from a man planning an ending.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“How did you escape?”
“The guard driving us stopped at a gas station.”
“Robert’s men argued.”
“I ran.”
“You expect us to believe that?”
“No.”
Mark moved closer to the camera.
“Check the gas station outside Warrenton.”
Police did.
Footage confirmed most of his story.
Mark escaped through a restroom window.
One of Robert’s men chased him.
Mark hid in a drainage ditch until sunrise.
Then he called police.
The interrogation continued.
“Why tonight?”
“Because Robert told me he already has the second Aurora authorization.”
Elena frowned.
“That requires my biometric confirmation.”
“He found another way.”
“How?”
Mark hesitated.
“Your baby.”
Elena’s hand went to her stomach.
“What about my baby?”
Thomas designed Aurora’s trust around Elena and her direct descendants.
If Elena died or became permanently incapacitated after childbirth, the child could eventually inherit authorization.
Robert had discovered a legal vulnerability.
Not immediate access.
Future access.
“He doesn’t need Aurora today,” Mark said.
“He needs you unable to block him.”
Detective Brooks stiffened.
“He wants guardianship.”
“Yes.”
“Of Elena’s child?”
“Yes.”
Robert was the baby’s great-uncle.
Normally he would have no claim.
But if Elena were gone and Mark incarcerated, Robert could petition as a blood relative.
It was an absurd long shot.
Unless Robert had already prepared falsified family documents.
Mark said he had.
Elena felt sick.
“My son is not a corporate asset.”
“I know.”
“You called him leverage.”
Mark closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You discussed using him.”
“Yes.”
“You do not get to say you know anything about him.”
“I know.”
For once, Mark did not defend himself.
Detective Brooks asked the important question.
“How does Robert intend to reach Elena?”
Mark looked toward the camera.
“He already has someone inside.”
The hospital leak again.
Security audits had focused on Vanessa’s access.
But Robert had another person.
“Who?”
“I don’t know his name.”
“Male or female?”
“Female.”
“Medical staff?”
“Yes.”
Carol.
Elena hated that the thought appeared.
Then immediately rejected it.
Carol had protected her repeatedly.
Still, Detective Brooks investigated everyone.
Nurses.
Doctors.
Technicians.
Housekeeping.
Administration.
One staff member had unusual access.
Dr. Priya Shah.
The physician who treated Elena after the altered IV.
Her personnel file revealed she joined the hospital only six months earlier.
Before that, she worked at a private clinic funded by a Carter Biologics subsidiary.
Robert’s subsidiary.
Police approached her office.
Empty.
Her phone lay on the desk.
A cabinet contained cash and a second identification card under another name.
Dr. Priya Shah did not exist.
Her real name was Lauren Reed.
Vanessa’s older sister.
Elena stared at the personnel photograph.
Vanessa had an entire family inside this scheme.
Lauren had been the physician reassuring Elena while simultaneously reporting her condition to Robert.
Hospital security searched every medication order Lauren entered.
One stood out.
A non-emergency ultrasound had been scheduled for Elena at 11:30 that night in a lower-level imaging suite.
No one on Elena’s obstetric team requested it.
The order would have moved Elena away from the guarded maternity wing.
A trap.
Police decided to use it.
Not Elena.
A plainclothes officer would take her place.
Elena objected only once.
Then accepted the plan.
At 11:27, the decoy patient was moved through the service corridor.
Cameras monitored every doorway.
The imaging suite appeared empty.
Then the lights went out.
A man entered through a maintenance door.
Police moved in.
The man surrendered immediately.
He was not Robert.
He was a hospital engineer paid to unlock the corridor.
“Where is Robert?” Brooks demanded.
The engineer looked confused.
“I never met Robert Carter.”
“Who paid you?”
“Dr. Shah.”
“Where is she?”
“She said she’d be in the maternity wing.”
Elena’s blood went cold.
The entire imaging operation had been a distraction.
Lauren was upstairs.
With Carol.
And Rebecca.
The maternity-floor alarm sounded.
Detective Brooks ran.
Elena’s phone rang.
Rebecca.
Elena answered.
All she heard was heavy breathing.
Then Lauren’s voice.
“Your sister is fine.”
“For now.”
Elena whispered.
“What do you want?”
Lauren answered.
“Come back to your room.”
Elena looked toward Brooks.
Lauren continued.
“And Elena?”
“Yes?”
“Don’t bring the police.”
May you like
“Because Carol is standing beside your sister.”
“And I’ve already put something into Carol’s IV.”
