CHAPTER 5 — THE BETRAYAL INSIDE KINGSLEY MANOR

I stared at the photograph on my phone.

My hands were completely still.

But inside…

everything was collapsing.

The courtroom noise disappeared.

The lawyers disappeared.

The judge disappeared.

All I could see was Ellie.

My daughter.

Standing in the garden of Kingsley Manor.

Standing beside my father.

And in Charles Kingsley’s hand was the document Grant had spent months trying to obtain.

The Bluebird Trust transfer papers.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Because there were only two explanations.

Either my father was helping Grant…

or my father was hiding something much bigger.

Neither option gave me comfort.

“Mara?”

Evelyn’s voice pulled me back.

I quickly locked my phone.

“Are you okay?”

I looked toward Grant.

He was watching me carefully.

Not with anger.

With curiosity.

Like he was trying to understand what I had just discovered.

That scared me.

Because Grant was always dangerous when he was calm.

“I’m fine.”

Evelyn studied my face.

She knew me well enough to understand that I was lying.

But she didn’t push.

Not there.

Not in front of everyone.

The judge continued reviewing the evidence.

The hearing ended two hours later.

Grant walked out first.

Surrounded by his attorneys.

But before he reached the hallway…

he stopped.

He turned toward me.

For a moment, we were alone.

Almost like the old days.

Almost like the man who once held my hand and promised me forever was still standing there.

Then he spoke.

“You should have stayed quiet.”

I looked at him.

The coldness in his voice surprised me.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it confirmed everything.

The man I married was gone.

Or maybe…

he had never existed.

“You planned this.”

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.”

His expression changed.

“You think freezing accounts gives you control?”

“No.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“I think knowing the truth gives me control.”

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Then he leaned closer.

“You have no idea what you’re fighting.”

I almost smiled.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

His face hardened.

“Because it’s true.”

I walked away.

But his words followed me.

And they stayed with me.

Because deep down…

I knew something was wrong.

Grant was not acting like a man who had lost.

He was acting like a man who knew something I didn’t.

When I arrived back at Kingsley Manor that evening, security immediately opened the gates.

But something felt different.

Too quiet.

I entered the house.

“Where is my father?”

The employee at the entrance hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“He left an hour ago.”

“Did he leave alone?”

Another pause.

“No.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who was with him?”

The employee looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Mercer.”

The room went silent.

Grant.

My husband.

Had been inside my family home.

With my father.

While I was in court fighting to keep my daughter.

I walked directly to my father’s private office.

The door was unlocked.

That was unusual.

Charles Kingsley was careful about everything.

Inside, I searched quickly.

Not because I wanted to invade his privacy.

Because I had finally accepted something painful.

The people closest to me were the people most capable of hurting me.

The first drawer was empty.

The second contained old business documents.

The third…

contained a small black notebook.

No title.

No label.

Just my father’s handwriting on the first page.

I opened it.

And immediately recognized one name.

Grant Mercer.

The entries went back years.

Before my wedding.

Before Grant became part of Kingsley Global.

My heart started beating faster.

I turned the page.

A sentence stopped me.

Grant is not the weapon. He is the result.

I froze.

Another page.

Mara cannot know the truth until she is ready.

Another.

The Bluebird Trust was created because the greatest threat to the Kingsley family will always come from inside.

My hands trembled.

My father had known.

He had known there was a threat.

He had known about Grant.

But why?

Why did he allow me to marry him?

Why did he allow him into my life?

I kept reading.

Until I found the page that changed everything.

The handwriting became messier.

Like my father had written it during a moment of panic.

If Mara discovers this, she will hate me.

I stopped.

Then continued.

But if she does not know, she will never survive what is coming.

Below that was a name.

Not Grant.

Not Victoria.

Not any enemy I expected.

A name that made my entire body go cold.

Adrian Kingsley.

I dropped the notebook.

“No.”

The word escaped my mouth.

Because Adrian was the person I trusted most.

The person who had helped me uncover the truth.

The person who stood beside me.

The person who told me my father was involved.

I picked up the notebook again.

There was one final sentence on the page.

Never trust the person who helps you find the enemy.

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

My father stood in the doorway.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at the notebook in my hand.

And closed his eyes.

“You weren’t supposed to find that yet.”

My heart sank.

“Yet?”

He stepped inside.

“Mara, listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“Not this time.”

He stopped.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty shocked me.

I stared at him.

“You admit it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His face changed.

For the first time, I saw something beneath the cold businessman.

A tired father.

A frightened man.

“I was trying to protect you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

I held up the notebook.

“You all protect me by lying to me.”

He looked down.

“Because the truth would destroy you.”

I stepped closer.

“Try me.”

Silence.

Then my father said:

“Grant Mercer was never trying to steal the Bluebird Trust.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“He was trying to stop someone else from taking it first.”

The room became completely silent.

I stared at him.

“Then why did he betray me?”

My father looked at me.

And his answer changed everything.

“Because he was never supposed to love you.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What does that mean?”

My father took a deep breath.

“The marriage between you and Grant…”

He paused.

“It was arranged.”

My heart stopped.

“No.”

“Mara…”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“That’s impossible.”

My father looked away.

“I wish it was.”

Then he said the words I never expected to hear.

“Grant Mercer entered your life because someone wanted access to the Kingsley bloodline.”

I looked toward the hallway.

Toward the rooms where my daughter slept.

And suddenly the Bluebird Trust made sense.

Ellie was not just the beneficiary.

She was the future.

The person everyone wanted control over.

My father walked closer.

“There is something you need to know about Ellie.”

I froze.

“What?”

His expression became serious.

“Your daughter is not only the heir of the Bluebird Trust.”

A pause.

“She is the legal successor to something much larger.”

The lights suddenly went out.

Every security alarm in the mansion activated.

Red lights flashed through the hallway.

Then every screen in the house turned on.

A message appeared.

Not from Grant.

Not from my father.

Not from Adrian.

A new name appeared.

VICTORIA HALE
