CHAPTER 18 — THE ENEMY WEARING MY HUSBAND’S FACE

The alarm continued screaming.

Thirty minutes.

That was all the time we had.

Thirty minutes before the Kingsley network would complete an unauthorized transfer.

Thirty minutes before someone could move billions of dollars, ownership rights, and protected assets into unknown hands.

Everyone looked at Grant.

Everyone except me.

Because something felt wrong.

Not because I trusted him.

I had learned the cost of trusting people too easily.

But because I knew Grant Mercer.

At least…

I thought I did.

A man capable of building a two-year plan to destroy me would not make a mistake this obvious.

He would not leave a trail that even a beginner investigator could follow.

And yet…

that was exactly what the evidence showed.

Access codes.

Security records.

Transfer attempts.

Everything pointed to him.

Too perfectly.

I looked at the screen.

Then at Grant.

“Explain.”

His face was pale.

“I didn’t do this.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“Of course.”

Everyone looked at her.

She smiled.

“The first thing a guilty person says.”

Grant turned toward her.

“You know this isn’t me.”

“No.”

Victoria walked closer.

“I know exactly what you are.”

His expression changed.

“A man who finally realized he was disposable.”

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

Grant had spent his entire life being used.

First by his family.

Then by Victoria.

Then by my father.

And finally…

by me.

Not intentionally.

But because everyone around him had wanted something from him.

I looked at Adrian.

“Can we stop the transfer?”

He moved to the system.

“I can slow it down.”

“Can you stop it?”

A pause.

“I don’t know.”

I hated that answer.

Not because it was uncertain.

Because uncertainty was something the Kingsleys had created.

Secrets.

Hidden systems.

Backdoor plans.

Everything always depended on someone knowing something nobody else knew.

“Try.”

Adrian nodded.

He began typing.

Victoria watched him carefully.

Too carefully.

I noticed.

And that was the first clue.

She wasn’t surprised.

She wasn’t worried.

She was waiting.

“Victoria.”

She looked at me.

“What?”

“You knew this would happen.”

Her expression remained calm.

“No.”

“Yes.”

I stepped closer.

“You are too calm.”

She smiled.

“You always were observant.”

“Then tell me.”

“Tell you what?”

“Why are you not afraid?”

The room went silent.

Victoria looked toward the screen.

“The transfer will succeed.”

Grant’s face changed.

“What?”

She ignored him.

“You cannot stop what has already started.”

I looked at the system.

Then at her.

“You started this.”

A small smile appeared.

“I started many things.”

The answer confirmed everything.

My father stepped forward.

“You manipulated everyone.”

Victoria looked at him.

“Did I?”

Her voice became colder.

“Charles, you betrayed your daughter because you wanted control.”

“You married her to Grant because you wanted access.”

“You hid the truth because you wanted the family name protected.”

She looked at him.

“Do not pretend you are innocent.”

My father had no response.

Because she was right.

Then Victoria looked at Grant.

“You betrayed Mara because you were afraid.”

Grant clenched his jaw.

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty shocked everyone.

Victoria continued:

“And you let me.”

Grant stepped forward.

“You ruined my life.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You ruined your own life when you chose love over the mission.”

The room became silent.

Because that was the first time Victoria admitted it.

Grant had changed.

The man who entered my life with an assignment had become someone who no longer wanted the reward.

Someone who had started caring.

I hated that.

Because it made everything more complicated.

My phone suddenly received an alert.

A new file.

Sender:

Phoenix Archive System

I opened it.

A video appeared.

My grandfather.

Again.

But this time…

the recording was different.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Mara.”

Everyone became silent.

“If you are seeing this, then the final betrayal has revealed itself.”

I frowned.

Final betrayal.

My grandfather continued.

“The person who controls the Phoenix Protocol is not the person who owns the empire.”

A pause.

“The person who controls it is the person who understands sacrifice.”

The screen changed.

A hidden document appeared.

My eyes widened.

Because it was not a business document.

It was a legal document.

A guardianship agreement.

The name at the top:

ELLIE MERCER.

My heart stopped.

My grandfather continued.

“Ellie was never created to inherit power.”

“She was created to end the cycle of people fighting for it.”

I looked at my daughter.

The little girl who had unknowingly become the center of a war.

The video continued.

“The true heir is not the person with the strongest bloodline.”

“It is the person willing to give everything away.”

The recording ended.

The archive system updated.

A new option appeared.

TRANSFER FINAL AUTHORITY TO ELLIE MERCER?

Everyone froze.

My father whispered:

“No.”

Victoria looked shocked.

For the first time…

truly shocked.

Because she had never considered this possibility.

I stared at the screen.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

I shook my head.

“Ellie is three years old.”

Adrian nodded.

“The system knows.”

“Then why is this appearing?”

He looked at the documents.

“Because the system is asking something else.”

“What?”

He read the final condition.

“The guardian.”

Silence.

I understood.

The empire was not asking Ellie to lead.

It was asking who would protect her.

Who would be willing to hold power without using it.

Who would be willing to walk away.

My eyes moved around the room.

My father.

Victoria.

Grant.

Adrian.

Everyone wanted control.

Everyone except…

I looked at Grant.

He looked back at me.

And for the first time, I saw the man beneath everything.

Not the liar.

Not the betrayer.

The person who had made terrible choices.

But still tried to fix them.

Then the system displayed another message.

GUARDIAN SELECTION REQUIRED.

Four names appeared.

CHARLES KINGSLEY.

VICTORIA HALE.

GRANT MERCER.

MARA KINGSLEY.

My heart tightened.

The final decision.

The entire war.

Everything.

It came down to one choice.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Mara.”

Her voice was calm.

“You know what happens if you choose yourself.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“You become exactly what everyone feared.”

A person with unlimited power.

I looked at Ellie.

Then pressed the screen.

Everyone held their breath.

I selected:

MARA KINGSLEY — GUARDIAN.

The system paused.

Then:

PROCESSING.

Victoria’s face changed.

“No.”

For the first time…

she looked truly afraid.

“What did you do?”

I looked at her.

“I chose responsibility.”

A warning appeared.

GUARDIAN ACCEPTED.

Then another message appeared.

FINAL THREAT IDENTIFIED.

Everyone looked.

The screen revealed the source of the transfer attempt.

Not Grant.

Not Victoria.

Not my father.

A hidden account.

A hidden identity.

The name appeared.

And every person in the room froze.

Because the person attacking Kingsley Global…

was someone who had been dead for twenty years.

My grandfather’s name appeared.

ALEXANDER KINGSLEY.

I stared at the screen.

Impossible.

My grandfather was dead.

But the system showed something else.

A final message:

THE MAN WHO BUILT THE EMPIRE NEVER LEFT.

The lights went dark.

May you like

And somewhere inside Kingsley Tower…

a door opened.
