CHAPTER 17 — THE WOMAN WHO STARTED THE WAR

Nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

The truth sitting on the screen was impossible to ignore.

VICTORIA HALE — ORIGINAL AGREEMENT

The document that exposed everything.

The woman who claimed she had spent decades protecting the Kingsley family…

was the woman who had created the chain of events that almost destroyed it.

I looked at Victoria.

For years, she had been the person everyone feared.

The strategist.

The advisor.

The woman who always knew the next move.

But now…

she was standing in the center of the Phoenix Archive with nowhere left to run.

“No.”

Her voice was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

“That document is false.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You know it isn’t.”

Victoria turned toward him.

“You.”

Her expression changed.

“You knew.”

Adrian didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My eyes moved between them.

“How long?”

Nobody responded.

“How long have you both known?”

Adrian looked down.

“Years.”

The answer hurt.

Not because it surprised me.

Because I was exhausted.

Tired of discovering that every person I trusted had another secret waiting.

I looked at Ellie.

She was watching all of us.

Confused.

Afraid.

And suddenly I hated the entire empire.

Not because of the money.

Not because of the power.

Because everyone had forgotten the cost.

They forgot that behind every strategy was a person.

Behind every decision was a family.

Behind every secret was someone who would eventually get hurt.

I turned toward Victoria.

“Explain.”

She stared at me.

For a moment, I thought she would deny everything.

Instead…

she laughed softly.

Not a happy laugh.

A tired one.

“You really are your mother’s daughter.”

The words confused me.

“What does that mean?”

“It means you still believe the truth matters.”

I stepped closer.

“It does.”

Victoria looked around the archive.

“Does it?”

She pointed at the documents.

“Look around you.”

“This family built an empire.”

“Then destroyed itself trying to protect it.”

She looked at my father.

“Charles wanted control.”

She looked at Grant.

“Grant wanted revenge.”

She looked at Adrian.

“Adrian wanted redemption.”

Then she looked at me.

“And you wanted love.”

Her expression hardened.

“Every one of you was willing to destroy something for what you believed was right.”

I stared at her.

“And you?”

Silence.

“What did you want?”

Victoria looked at the Kingsley symbol on the wall.

“I wanted to prevent this.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“You wanted to control it.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think you understand everything now?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You understand the version your grandfather wanted you to see.”

I frowned.

“What?”

Victoria smiled.

A small, dangerous smile.

“There is one thing nobody has told you.”

My stomach tightened.

“Another secret?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course.”

Victoria looked at my father.

“Tell her.”

He didn’t move.

“Charles.”

Still nothing.

Then Victoria said:

“Your father wasn’t the only person who betrayed your mother.”

My eyes moved to him.

“Dad?”

He looked away.

My mother became pale.

“No.”

Victoria continued.

“Your mother discovered the truth.”

“Not about the empire.”

“Not about the inheritance.”

“About you.”

My heart stopped.

“About me?”

Victoria nodded.

“You were never just the Kingsley heir.”

Silence.

“You were the reason the entire system was created.”

I didn’t understand.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian finally spoke.

“Mara…”

His voice was heavy.

“There is something about your birth.”

I looked at him.

“Say it.”

He hesitated.

Then:

“You were not supposed to inherit Kingsley Global.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“The original plan was different.”

My mother closed her eyes.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“What was the original plan?”

Adrian answered:

“Your grandfather wanted to separate the empire from the bloodline.”

I listened.

“But when you were born…”

He stopped.

“Something changed.”

“What?”

He looked at Ellie.

Then at me.

“You were born with a rare combination of two family lines.”

My stomach tightened.

“Kingsley and Mercer.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Grant.

He looked devastated.

“The marriage…”

I whispered.

Grant nodded.

“Yes.”

I felt sick.

“The marriage was planned because of bloodlines?”

“Yes.”

My voice became colder.

“So I was never a person.”

Grant looked at me.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“Mara, that isn’t true.”

“Then what was I?”

He stepped closer.

“A target.”

The word hit harder than anything.

“You were always the person everyone wanted access to.”

“The person everyone wanted to control.”

“But…”

He swallowed.

“You were also the person who changed everything.”

I looked away.

Because I didn’t want his sympathy.

Not anymore.

I wanted truth.

Only truth.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Now you understand.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

Her expression changed.

“No?”

I shook my head.

“You still don’t understand me.”

She frowned.

“You think knowing my past makes me yours.”

I touched Ellie’s hand.

“You think knowing my bloodline gives you ownership.”

I looked around the archive.

“At the end of the day, all of you made the same mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“You forgot I was a person.”

The room went quiet.

Then the archive system activated.

A new notification appeared.

PHOENIX PROTOCOL — SUCCESSION COMPLETE.

Everyone looked.

Another message appeared.

EMERGENCY THREAT DETECTED.

My heart tightened.

“What now?”

Adrian moved toward the screen.

His face changed.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer.

“Adrian.”

He turned.

“Mara…”

His voice was serious.

“Someone has accessed the external Kingsley network.”

“Who?”

The answer appeared on the screen.

A name.

A name none of us expected.

GRANT MERCER.

Everyone looked at him.

Grant stepped back.

“No.”

The system continued.

UNAUTHORIZED TRANSFER ATTEMPT DETECTED.

Victoria smiled.

Slowly.

Because she understood something.

“Interesting.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She looked at Grant.

“Maybe he wasn’t the victim after all.”

My heart sank.

“Grant?”

He looked at the screen.

“I didn’t do this.”

But the evidence was appearing.

Security logs.

Access codes.

Transfer requests.

All connected to him.

The man who claimed he wanted to protect Ellie…

was now being shown as the person attacking the empire.

I stared at him.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

I wondered if I had made the same mistake everyone else had made.

Trusting the wrong person.

Grant looked at me.

“Mara.”

His voice was desperate.

“You have to believe me.”

The archive alarm began screaming.

A final message appeared.

TRANSFER WILL COMPLETE IN 30 MINUTES.

Victoria looked at me.

Smiling.

“Now the real war begins.”

Because this time…

May you like

the enemy was not hiding in the shadows.

He was standing right in front of me.
