CHAPTER 7 — The Presidential Suite

The knock on the boardroom door echoed through the room.
Every conversation stopped.
The General Counsel opened the door.
Two investigators from the Financial Crimes Division stood outside, dressed in dark business suits.
One held up an official authorization.
"We're here to preserve evidence related to an ongoing financial investigation."
The room fell silent.
Marcus immediately stood.
"This is outrageous."
"You have no right to be here."
One investigator looked at him calmly.
"We're not here to arrest anyone today, Mr. Bennett."
"We're here to make sure nothing disappears."
His words landed harder than a threat.
Because everyone in the room understood what they meant.
Marcus was no longer being treated as the CEO.
He was being treated as the subject of an investigation.
The investigators began photographing documents.
Hard drives were cataloged.
Financial records were sealed inside evidence boxes.
Marcus watched in disbelief.
Only yesterday, every employee in this building had rushed to obey his orders.
Today...
No one even looked at him for permission.
Richard Hartwell closed the final folder.
"Mr. Bennett."
"Our attorneys will contact yours."
"This meeting is over."
Marcus didn't move.
He looked at me instead.
"Isabella."
His voice had changed.
The arrogance was gone.
Only confusion remained.
"Can we talk?"
I met his eyes.
"There was a time when I would've stopped everything to listen to you."
I stood.
"That time ended last night."
Without another word, I walked out of the boardroom.
Every executive stepped aside to clear a path.
No one stopped me.
No one questioned me.
For the first time in eleven years...
I wasn't walking behind Marcus.
He was watching me walk away.
Outside the building...
Thomas Reeves opened the rear door of the waiting Rolls-Royce.
"Where to, Ms. Hartwell?"
I looked through the tinted window toward the Crystal Crown Hotel rising across the skyline.
"Take me home."
Thomas hesitated.
"The penthouse?"
I shook my head.
"No."
"The hotel."
He smiled faintly.
"As you wish."
Meanwhile...
Marcus finally left headquarters.
Vanessa hurried toward him the moment the elevator doors opened.
"What happened?"
He ignored the question.
"Let's go."
She frowned.
"Marcus..."
"I said let's go."
His tone was colder than she had ever heard.
They drove in silence.
Vanessa kept stealing nervous glances at him.
His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
For the first time...
Marcus looked afraid.
The Crystal Crown Hotel looked exactly the same as it had the night before.
Luxury cars lined the entrance.
Doormen greeted arriving guests.
Fresh flowers decorated the lobby.
Nothing had changed.
Except everything had.
Marcus walked through the revolving doors expecting familiar faces.
Employees greeted him politely.
But differently.
No one called him "Mr. Chairman."
No one rushed to carry his briefcase.
No one asked for instructions.
He noticed.
He hated it.
Vanessa slipped her arm through his.
"Let's go upstairs."
"I need to change before lunch."
Marcus nodded absentmindedly.
They stepped into the private elevator.
Vanessa smiled again.
"At least we still have the suite."
Marcus forced himself to smile.
"Of course we do."
The elevator climbed.
Thirty.
Thirty-five.
Forty.
Forty-two.
The doors opened.
The Presidential Floor.
Vanessa walked confidently toward the suite.
She held up the electronic key card.
BEEP.
A red light flashed.
She frowned.
Again.
ACCESS DENIED.
She laughed awkwardly.
"Looks like the battery's dead."
Marcus reached for the card.
He tried it himself.
Another red light.
ACCESS DENIED.
His stomach tightened.
Just then...
The elevator doors opened again.
David Reynolds, the General Manager, stepped out accompanied by two security supervisors.
"Good afternoon."
Marcus looked relieved.
"David."
"Good."
"My card isn't working again."
David remained professional.
"I'm aware."
"Then fix it."
"I'm afraid I can't."
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean you can't?"
David took a slow breath.
"The Presidential Suite has been reassigned."
Vanessa laughed.
"To who?"
David answered without hesitation.
"To its owner."
Marcus stared at him.
"What owner?"
David looked directly at Isabella, who had just stepped out of the second elevator.
"Ms. Hartwell."
Vanessa turned.
Her confident smile disappeared instantly.
I walked toward them calmly.
No anger.
No satisfaction.
Only quiet certainty.
The same hallway.
The same suite.
The same doors.
Less than twenty-four hours earlier, I had been thrown out.
Now...
Every employee stood behind me.
David handed me a gold access card.
"Welcome back, Ms. Hartwell."
I accepted it.
"Thank you."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Isabella."
"We need to talk."
I looked at him.
"You had your chance."
He lowered his voice.
"I made a mistake."
I tilted my head slightly.
"A mistake?"
"You called security."
"You humiliated me in front of hundreds of people."
"You gave another woman my mother's brooch."
"Then told me I didn't belong."
I paused.
"No."
"Those weren't mistakes."
"They were choices."
Marcus had no answer.
Vanessa suddenly pushed herself forward.
"This is ridiculous."
"Marcus promised me this suite."
I looked at her.
"No."
"He borrowed it."
"It was never his to promise."
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I've been staying here for months."
"I know."
"The reservation records are very thorough."
Her expression changed.
She realized I knew everything.
Every weekend.
Every overnight stay.
Every luxury expense.
Every lie.
I turned to David.
"Who is currently registered as the guest of this suite?"
David checked his tablet.
"Ms. Isabella Hartwell."
"Excellent."
I looked back at Vanessa.
"You have exactly five minutes to collect your personal belongings."
Her eyes widened.
"What?"
"After that..."
"You'll be removed from the property."
Vanessa laughed loudly.
"You can't throw me out."
"I certainly can."
"I don't work for you."
"No."
"But everyone else here does."
I nodded toward the security team.
The two supervisors stepped forward immediately.
"Yes, Ms. Hartwell?"
Vanessa looked from them...
To me...
Then to Marcus.
Waiting for him to stop this.
Marcus said nothing.
He couldn't.
He no longer had the authority.
Vanessa's face twisted with rage.
"You people are making a huge mistake."
She pointed directly at David.
"I'll have you fired."
David remained perfectly calm.
"I'm afraid only Ms. Hartwell can make that decision."
Vanessa looked stunned.
She turned toward Marcus again.
"Say something!"
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because for the first time in eleven years...
His title meant absolutely nothing.
Furious, Vanessa stormed toward me.
She stopped only inches away.
"You think you've won?"
Her voice dripped with hatred.
I answered quietly.
"This was never a competition."
"You simply walked into someone else's home..."
"...and forgot to ask who owned the keys."
She raised her hand.
For a split second...
The entire hallway froze.
Marcus's eyes widened.
"Vanessa..."
But he was too late.
SLAP!
Her palm struck David Reynolds across the face.
The General Manager staggered one step sideways.
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Every employee stared in disbelief.
Vanessa had just assaulted the General Manager...
Inside a hotel she had no legal right to enter.
David slowly touched his cheek.
Then looked toward me.
He didn't ask what to do.
He simply waited.
Because there was now only one person authorized to give orders.
I met his eyes.
My voice remained calm.
"Mr. Reynolds..."
"Please contact the police."
Vanessa's face instantly lost all color.
May you like
She had finally realized...
This wasn't yesterday anymore.
