CHAPTER 13 — The Knock at 8:00 A.M.

At exactly 8:00 a.m., the doorbell rang.

Marcus didn't move.

He stood frozen in the middle of the penthouse, staring at the security monitor.

Three black government SUVs.

Four investigators.

Two uniformed officers.

One man carrying a leather briefcase.

Another holding sealed evidence boxes.

Marcus already knew why they were there.

The second ring echoed through the apartment.

Then a firm knock.

"Mr. Bennett."

"Financial Crimes Division."

"We have a judicial warrant."

Marcus closed his eyes.

For eleven years...

People had waited outside his office hoping for five minutes of his time.

Today...

The government was waiting outside his front door.

He opened it.

Special Agent Daniel Brooks stood at the front.

Beside him was Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Mitchell.

She handed Marcus a packet of documents.

"Mr. Bennett..."

"This is a court-authorized search warrant."

"It covers this residence, your electronic devices, financial records, and any documents related to Hartwell Hospitality Holdings."

Marcus looked down at the first page.

His name.

His address.

The judge's signature.

There was no mistake.

Karen spoke again.

"You may contact your attorney."

"But the search begins immediately."

Marcus stepped aside without saying a word.

Within seconds...

Investigators spread throughout the penthouse.

One photographed every room.

Another disconnected desktop computers.

A digital forensics specialist carefully collected laptops, tablets, and mobile phones.

Every item was placed into evidence bags.

Every drawer was opened.

Every safe was inspected.

Marcus watched silently.

The penthouse had once felt like a symbol of success.

Now...

It felt like a crime scene.

An investigator approached carrying a small black safe.

"Sir."

"We found this behind the study bookshelf."

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Combination?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I..."

Daniel interrupted politely.

"If you decline, we'll open it under the authority of the warrant."

Marcus slowly entered the code.

The safe clicked open.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

Property deeds.

Several expensive watches.

And a small USB drive.

Daniel picked it up.

"What's on this?"

Marcus remained silent.

The digital forensic analyst immediately sealed it inside an evidence envelope.

Across the city...

News helicopters circled above Marcus's building.

Television crews gathered behind police barricades.

Reporters spoke excitedly into cameras.

"Federal investigators have entered the former CEO's residence..."

"Sources confirm the investigation has expanded..."

Within minutes...

The story dominated every major news network.

At Hartwell Holdings...

Thomas entered my office carrying a tablet.

"You should see this."

I looked at the live broadcast.

Marcus's building filled the screen.

Cameras.

Investigators.

Reporters.

Commentators.

I quietly handed the tablet back.

"I don't need to watch."

Thomas nodded.

"I understand."

No...

He didn't.

Watching Marcus suffer brought me no joy.

Only sadness.

Because once upon a time...

I would've stood beside him.

No matter what.

Back inside the penthouse...

An investigator opened the master bedroom closet.

Rows of tailored suits.

Luxury shoes.

Designer luggage.

Then...

One garment bag caught her attention.

She unzipped it.

Inside hung a white wedding dress.

Daniel looked surprised.

Marcus lowered his eyes.

It wasn't Isabella's.

It was Vanessa's.

The receipt was still pinned inside.

Wedding boutique.

Delivery scheduled for three weeks later.

Daniel quietly photographed everything.

Marcus whispered,

"I never proposed."

Daniel didn't answer.

The evidence spoke for itself.

Minutes later...

Another investigator called out.

"Agent Brooks."

"We found something."

Everyone gathered in the study.

Hidden behind framed awards was a locked filing cabinet.

Inside...

Dozens of original contracts.

Unsigned agreements.

Private correspondence.

And a leather-bound journal.

Daniel carefully opened the first page.

The handwriting belonged to Marcus.

The first entry read:

If Isabella ever discovers the truth, everything I've built will disappear.

Daniel slowly turned another page.

Another entry.

Richard Hartwell trusts her too much. As long as she never asks questions, I'm safe.

Another.

Vanessa says Isabella is too loyal to leave. I think she's right.

The room became silent.

Marcus's face lost all color.

He had forgotten the journal existed.

At the Financial Crimes Division...

Special Agent Brooks delivered the USB drive to the digital evidence lab.

The technician connected it to an isolated forensic computer.

Hundreds of encrypted files appeared.

"Can you open them?"

Daniel asked.

The technician nodded.

"It'll take a few minutes."

No one spoke.

Finally...

The first folder unlocked.

Its title read:

Private Transfers

Daniel opened it.

The screen filled with spreadsheets.

Account numbers.

Transfer dates.

Amounts.

Destination companies.

One transaction immediately stood out.

$12,500,000

Transferred six months earlier.

Recipient:

Clarke International Consulting.

Daniel frowned.

"There is no such company."

The technician typed rapidly.

"There wasn't."

"It was dissolved two weeks ago."

Meanwhile...

Vanessa sat in another interview room.

She hadn't slept.

She looked exhausted.

Agent Brooks's partner entered carrying a single photograph.

He placed it on the table.

Vanessa glanced down.

It showed the white wedding dress hanging inside Marcus's penthouse.

Her expression changed instantly.

"He..."

"He actually bought it."

The investigator watched her carefully.

"You didn't know?"

Vanessa slowly shook her head.

"He said..."

"...he'd marry me after the divorce."

The investigator remained silent.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A hollow, broken laugh.

"So..."

"He lied to both of us."

Back at the penthouse...

Robert Ellis finally arrived.

He walked quickly through the open front door.

Marcus stood exactly where Robert had left him the night before.

Motionless.

Robert looked around the apartment.

Evidence boxes lined the hallway.

Computers were gone.

Documents were sealed.

His client looked defeated.

Robert spoke quietly.

"Marcus..."

"I need to ask one question."

Marcus nodded weakly.

Robert held up the leather journal.

"Why did you write this?"

Marcus stared at it.

His shoulders slumped.

"I thought..."

"...if I wrote everything down..."

"...I'd stop lying to myself."

Robert closed the journal.

"You didn't."

Marcus's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

"I didn't."

Late that afternoon...

The digital forensic team completed the analysis of the USB drive.

Daniel Brooks reviewed the final report.

Then immediately called the Chief Prosecutor.

"We've confirmed intentional concealment."

"False companies."

"Hidden transfers."

"Destroyed accounting records."

The prosecutor asked one question.

"Enough for indictment?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"More than enough."

The prosecutor ended the call with five words.

"Prepare the grand jury package."

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

The investigation had reached the point of no return.
