CHAPTER 5 — Welcome Back, Ms. Hartwell

Marcus pushed open the boardroom doors without waiting for permission.
The room fell silent.
Twelve directors.
Seven senior executives.
The company's legal team.
The Chief Financial Officer.
The Corporate Secretary.
Everyone was already seated.
Or rather...
Everyone except one person.
Because the moment Marcus stepped inside—
Every executive in the room stood up.
Not for him.
For the woman seated calmly at the head of the conference table.
Me.
I wore a navy suit with a single pearl necklace.
No expensive jewelry.
No dramatic expression.
No anger.
No tears.
Just quiet confidence.
The same woman Marcus had ordered security to throw out less than twelve hours earlier.
The Corporate Secretary spoke first.
"Good morning..."
He looked directly at me.
"Welcome back, Ms. Hartwell."
Every executive echoed the greeting.
"Welcome back, Ms. Hartwell."
Marcus stopped walking.
His face drained of color.
For several seconds, he simply stared.
Then he laughed.
A short, nervous laugh.
"What is this?"
No one answered.
He looked at me.
"Isabella."
"What game are you playing?"
I folded my hands on the table.
"I'm not playing one."
He looked around the room.
"Why is everyone standing?"
Still...
No one answered him.
Richard Hartwell finally broke the silence.
"They're standing because they know who they're greeting."
Marcus frowned.
"I don't understand."
"No," Richard replied calmly.
"You never did."
Marcus turned toward the directors.
"What is this meeting about?"
The General Counsel slid a thick folder across the polished table.
"Please have a seat."
Marcus didn't move.
"I asked a question."
"So did we," the attorney answered.
"You'll receive your answers after we've finished ours."
Marcus reluctantly pulled out a chair.
Vanessa, who had followed him upstairs despite being told the meeting was private, attempted to enter.
The Head of Security stepped into her path.
"I'm sorry, ma'am."
"This meeting is restricted."
Vanessa frowned.
"I'm with Marcus."
"I'm afraid Mr. Bennett no longer has authority to invite guests."
Her smile disappeared instantly.
"What?"
"I'm asking you to wait outside."
"I said I'm with—"
"Outside."
His tone remained respectful.
But final.
The door closed.
For the first time since beginning the affair...
Vanessa found herself locked out.
Inside the boardroom...
The projector illuminated.
The first slide appeared.
Bennett Luxury Hospitality Group
Marcus leaned back confidently.
Finally.
Something familiar.
The next slide appeared.
Current Ownership Structure
Marcus barely glanced at it.
"I've seen these reports."
"You've seen edited reports," the General Counsel corrected.
"You've never seen this one."
Click.
A complex corporate diagram appeared.
Holding companies.
Investment partnerships.
Property trusts.
International subsidiaries.
Marcus frowned.
"What exactly am I looking at?"
"The truth."
Click.
Another layer unfolded.
Then another.
Then another.
Each company connected upward through multiple legal entities.
Finally...
Every line ended beneath a single name.
Hartwell Holdings.
Marcus stared at the screen.
His expression remained blank.
"I don't understand."
Richard spoke quietly.
"You were never meant to."
The attorney walked toward the display.
"Eleven years ago, Hartwell Holdings agreed to finance your first hotel."
Marcus nodded impatiently.
"Yes."
"Private investors."
"No."
"Corporate lenders."
"No."
"Strategic partners."
"No."
Marcus looked irritated.
"Then who?"
The attorney turned toward me.
"Hartwell Holdings."
Marcus laughed.
"No."
The attorney continued.
"The land for your first hotel..."
"Hartwell."
"The construction financing..."
"Hartwell."
"The furniture contracts..."
"Hartwell."
"The refinancing after the recession..."
"Hartwell."
"The acquisition of your second resort..."
"Hartwell."
"The purchase of the Crystal Crown Hotel..."
"Hartwell."
Every answer struck harder than the one before.
Marcus slowly looked at me.
"What is he talking about?"
I held his gaze.
"My family."
Silence.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Marcus shook his head.
"Impossible."
"I would've known."
"No," Richard answered.
"You wouldn't."
"Because Isabella asked us never to tell you."
Marcus turned toward me again.
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"You hid this from me?"
"I protected you."
"Protected me?"
"You wanted to build something with your own hands."
"I wanted you to believe you had."
Marcus pushed back his chair.
"This is insane."
The attorney calmly opened another folder.
"It isn't."
He placed dozens of original documents across the table.
Trust agreements.
Share certificates.
Investment authorizations.
Property deeds.
Bank guarantees.
Every document carried the Hartwell seal.
Every signature was genuine.
Every page was legally binding.
Marcus flipped through them faster and faster.
His breathing became uneven.
"This..."
"This can't be right."
"It is," the attorney replied.
"You've personally signed many of these."
"I..."
Marcus searched the pages.
His own signature stared back at him.
He remembered signing hundreds of financing documents over the years.
He had simply never read beyond the summary pages.
He trusted the legal department.
He trusted...
Me.
Richard folded his hands.
"Do you know why Isabella kept our involvement secret?"
Marcus remained silent.
"Because she loved you."
"She believed your pride mattered more than recognition."
"Every time you accepted another award..."
"She applauded."
"Every interview that called you a self-made billionaire..."
"She smiled."
"Every magazine cover..."
"She never corrected them."
Richard's voice hardened.
"And last night..."
"You rewarded her by throwing her out of the hotel her family owned."
Marcus lowered his eyes.
For the first time...
He couldn't speak.
The attorney cleared his throat.
"There is one final matter."
The projector changed again.
A new chart appeared.
Share Ownership
Hartwell Holdings.
82%.
Institutional investors.
15.2%.
Marcus Bennett.
2.8%.
Marcus stared at the number.
"No."
"There has to be a mistake."
"There isn't."
"You own less than three percent of the company."
"You never controlled the Board."
"You never controlled the hotels."
"You never controlled the investments."
"You were employed to manage them."
Marcus whispered,
"I'm the CEO."
The attorney nodded.
"You were."
The Corporate Secretary stood.
"Resolution Number 2026-41."
He began reading aloud.
"Effective immediately, Marcus Bennett is removed from the position of Chief Executive Officer."
"All executive authority is permanently revoked."
"Corporate assets assigned to Mr. Bennett are to be returned within twenty-four hours."
"Access to all company properties remains suspended."
Marcus looked around desperately.
"This is ridiculous."
"You can't do this."
Richard answered quietly.
"We already have."
Marcus turned toward me.
"You knew this would happen."
"I hoped it never would."
"You planned this."
"No."
"You did."
I met his eyes without raising my voice.
"I spent eleven years making sure this day never came."
"You brought it here yourself."
Marcus stood abruptly.
"This is revenge."
"No," I replied.
"This is accountability."
"You humiliated your wife in front of the world."
"You misused company funds."
"You violated your fiduciary responsibilities."
"And yesterday..."
"You proved you could no longer be trusted with an empire you never actually owned."
The room remained silent.
No one defended him.
Because every person present knew I was telling the truth.
Just then, the boardroom doors opened.
The Chief Internal Auditor entered carrying three large archive boxes.
He placed them on the conference table.
"Ms. Hartwell."
"These are the preliminary findings."
Marcus looked confused.
"What findings?"
The auditor met his eyes.
"The forensic audit."
Marcus frowned.
"What forensic audit?"
The auditor slowly opened the first box.
Inside were hundreds of financial records.
Credit card statements.
Expense reports.
Property purchases.
Luxury invoices.
Private jet logs.
And dozens of payments made for Vanessa Clarke.
The auditor looked directly at Marcus.
"This is only the beginning."
My father closed the final folder.
"Mr. Bennett..."
"I hope you enjoyed your celebration last night."
"Because from this moment forward..."
"Every dollar you spent will be accounted for."
Marcus looked at the mountain of evidence.
For the first time in years...
He realized this wasn't simply about losing his position.
May you like
Everything he had done over the past eleven years...
Was about to be exposed.
