CHAPTER 8 — THE MAN IN THE SHADOWS

Sloane couldn't move.
The stranger stood only a few feet away.
He looked like Marcus.
Same eyes.
Same sharp jaw.
Same controlled expression.
But there was something different about him.
Marcus had always carried himself like a man who owned every room he entered.
This man looked like someone who had spent years hiding from one.
Sloane tightened her grip on her phone.
“Stay where you are.”
The man stopped.
“I don't want to hurt you.”
“That's what everyone says.”
“I know.”
“You expect me to believe you're Marcus Caldwell?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Sloane glanced toward the door.
It was locked.
She looked back.
“Then who are you?”
The man sighed.
“Your father.”
Sloane's heart pounded.
“You said that already.”
“I mean your biological father.”
“My mother said Marcus was.”
“She was wrong.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
He reached slowly into his coat.
Sloane immediately stepped backward.
“Don't.”
He stopped.
Then carefully removed an old photograph.
He placed it on the table.
Sloane stared.
It showed her mother.
Pregnant.
Standing beside the same man.
On the back was a handwritten note.
Sloane, my greatest mistake was loving the wrong man.
Sloane's eyes filled with tears.
She knew the handwriting.
Her mother's.
She looked up.
“What is your name?”
The man hesitated.
“Gabriel Caldwell.”
Sloane froze.
“Gabriel?”
“Yes.”
“Then who is Marcus?”
Gabriel's expression darkened.
“My brother.”
Sloane felt sick.
“There are two of you.”
“Yes.”
“Which one built Blackstone?”
“Both of us.”
“Which one married my mother?”
Gabriel looked down.
“I did.”
Sloane stared.
“Then why did Marcus take your identity?”
“Because I trusted him.”
THE BROTHERS
Gabriel sat down.
Sloane remained standing.
“Tell me everything.”
“I will.”
“No lies.”
“No lies.”
“Start with my mother.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Your mother and I met when we were young.”
“How young?”
“Twenty.”
“And Marcus?”
“Twenty-two.”
“Were you both involved with Blackstone?”
“No.”
“Then what were you doing?”
“Building the first company.”
“Together?”
“Yes.”
“Why did Marcus betray you?”
Gabriel looked toward the window.
“Because he wanted Elena.”
Sloane's eyes narrowed.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“But she chose you.”
“She did.”
“And Marcus hated you.”
“He became obsessed with her.”
Sloane sat down.
“What happened?”
Gabriel's voice became quiet.
“Your mother became pregnant.”
“With me?”
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
“Marcus discovered it.”
Sloane's stomach tightened.
“He wanted you.”
“Why?”
“Because he believed your bloodline gave you legal control over the Caldwell Trust.”
Sloane looked at him.
“So this entire war began because of me?”
“No.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“It began because Marcus wanted power.”
“And I was the key.”
“Yes.”
THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED
Gabriel continued.
“The night you were born, Marcus came to the hospital.”
Sloane held her breath.
“He wasn't alone.”
“Who was with him?”
“Richard.”
“Richard Vale?”
“No.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“Richard Caldwell.”
Sloane frowned.
“You said Richard wasn't his real name.”
“He changed it.”
“Why?”
“To disappear.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Richard was Marcus's most loyal associate.”
“And he raised Alexander?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To create a second heir.”
Sloane stared.
“Alexander.”
“Yes.”
“Then Alexander isn't Marcus's son?”
Gabriel nodded.
“He is.”
“But you said Marcus is my father.”
“Biologically.”
“And Alexander?”
“Biologically, Marcus's son too.”
Sloane frowned.
“Then how are we siblings?”
Gabriel answered:
“Your mother had you with me.”
He paused.
“Marcus had Alexander with another woman.”
Sloane stared.
“Then why does the system recognize both of us?”
“Because Marcus altered the Caldwell succession protocol.”
“To make Alexander a claimant?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To create a backup.”
Sloane understood.
“If he couldn't control me…”
“He could control Alexander.”
THE REAL REASON GRANT MARRIED SLOANE
Sloane looked down.
“And Grant?”
Gabriel's expression hardened.
“Grant was trained by Marcus.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“You don't know how far it went.”
“Tell me.”
“Grant wasn't chosen because of your inheritance.”
“Then why?”
“Because he was the only person Marcus believed you would trust.”
Sloane laughed bitterly.
“I trusted him.”
“I know.”
“He betrayed me.”
“Yes.”
“He destroyed my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“He tried to steal my hotel.”
“Yes.”
“But he never killed me.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Because he couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother gave him one order.”
Sloane looked up.
“What order?”
“Protect Sloane at all costs.”
Sloane stared.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does.”
“Then why did he hurt me?”
“Because Marcus threatened to kill his family.”
Sloane froze.
“What family?”
Gabriel didn't answer immediately.
Then:
“Grant has a daughter.”
Sloane's eyes widened.
“Where?”
“Hidden.”
“Why?”
“Marcus found out about her.”
Sloane suddenly remembered Bianca.
“Does Bianca know?”
“No.”
“Then who is the mother?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“You already know.”
Sloane's heart stopped.
“Who?”
“Bianca.”
BIANCA'S REAL STORY
Sloane couldn't speak.
Bianca.
Grant's mistress.
The woman she had hated.
The woman who had helped expose the plan.
She had a daughter with Grant.
And Marcus knew.
Gabriel continued.
“Grant and Bianca had a child before you ever met him.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because Marcus made them hide her.”
“Where is she?”
“Safe.”
“Where?”
“I can't tell you.”
Sloane stood.
“Why not?”
“Because if Marcus discovers the location, she'll be dead.”
Sloane stared.
“Then we need to protect her.”
Gabriel nodded.
“That is why I came.”
“To ask me for help?”
“To give you a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Walk away.”
Sloane laughed.
“You've got to be kidding.”
“I know what this war costs.”
“You've been hiding for seventeen years.”
“Yes.”
“My mother hid for seventeen years.”
“Yes.”
“Alexander was lied to his entire life.”
“Yes.”
“Grant destroyed my life.”
“Yes.”
“And you want me to walk away?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if you continue, people will die.”
Sloane stepped closer.
“They already have.”
THE SECRET FACILITY
Gabriel opened a laptop.
A map appeared.
A remote location outside the city.
Sloane recognized it.
“That property belongs to Blackstone.”
“Yes.”
“What is there?”
“A facility.”
“What kind?”
“The first Caldwell data center.”
Sloane frowned.
“I thought the hotel archive was the original.”
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“The archive is a decoy.”
Sloane's heart sank.
“What?”
“Your mother built the hotel archive to make Marcus believe he had found everything.”
“Then the real archive is…”
“Here.”
He pointed to the map.
Sloane stared.
“What is stored there?”
“Everything.”
“Every Blackstone transaction?”
“Yes.”
“Every secret?”
“Yes.”
“Every record of what Marcus did?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't we go there?”
“Because it requires two people.”
“Who?”
Gabriel answered:
“You and Alexander.”
Sloane frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the system was designed by your mother.”
“And?”
“She trusted both her children.”
Sloane stared.
“So we need Alexander.”
“Yes.”
“But he's still in the hospital.”
“Not anymore.”
Sloane froze.
“What?”
Gabriel looked at her.
“Alexander left two hours ago.”
“Where?”
Gabriel's expression changed.
“He went to Marcus.”
THE ABDUCTION
Sloane immediately called Alexander.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
She called the hospital.
The nurse answered.
“Mr. Vale checked out earlier.”
“Did he say where he was going?”
“No.”
Sloane looked at Gabriel.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You let him go?”
“I tried to stop him.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because you would have followed.”
“I am going to follow.”
Gabriel shook his head.
“No.”
Sloane grabbed her coat.
“You don't get to decide.”
“He went to negotiate.”
“With Marcus?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To exchange himself for the child.”
Sloane froze.
“Grant's daughter.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Marcus has her.”
Sloane's anger vanished.
Fear replaced it.
“Where?”
“We don't know.”
“Then how does Alexander know?”
“Marcus contacted him.”
Sloane looked at her phone.
A new message appeared.
From Alexander.
Don't come after me.
Then another.
I'm sorry.
Then:
If you want me alive, find the girl.
Sloane stared.
Gabriel read the messages.
“He's already inside.”
Sloane whispered:
“Inside what?”
Gabriel answered:
“Blackstone's central facility.”
THE COUNTDOWN
A timer appeared on Sloane's phone.
05:59:58
She stared.
“What is that?”
Gabriel's face changed.
“The Caldwell Protocol.”
“What?”
“Marcus activated it.”
Sloane's voice became urgent.
“What does it do?”
“Six hours.”
“For what?”
“If you don't arrive…”
Gabriel stopped.
“Tell me.”
“If you don't arrive within six hours, Alexander dies.”
Sloane's heart pounded.
“And the girl?”
“She dies first.”
Sloane grabbed the keys.
Gabriel stopped her.
“You can't go alone.”
“I won't.”
“Who will you bring?”
Sloane looked at him.
“You.”
Gabriel stared.
“Why?”
“Because you're my father.”
He looked stunned.
Sloane continued:
“You've spent seventeen years hiding.”
She opened the door.
“I'm done hiding.”
THE ROAD
They drove through the night.
Sloane sat in the passenger seat.
Gabriel drove.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Then Sloane asked:
“Do you love my mother?”
Gabriel's hands tightened around the wheel.
“Yes.”
“Do you still?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you go back?”
“Because she asked me not to.”
“Why?”
“To keep you alive.”
Sloane looked out the window.
“Everyone sacrificed for me.”
“Yes.”
“But nobody asked me what I wanted.”
Gabriel looked at her.
“What do you want?”
Sloane answered immediately.
“My family.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Then tonight, we get them back.”
THE FACILITY
At 2:14 a.m., they reached the location.
A massive concrete building stood in the darkness.
No signs.
No lights.
No guards.
Too quiet.
Sloane stepped out.
“This is it?”
Gabriel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Where's security?”
“Inside.”
“How do we get in?”
Gabriel handed her a keycard.
“You don't.”
He pointed toward a concrete wall.
“Your mother built another entrance.”
Sloane looked.
There was nothing there.
Then she remembered the pendant.
The broken pendant.
She pulled the tiny chip from her pocket.
Gabriel smiled.
“She knew you'd keep it.”
Sloane pressed it against the wall.
A section opened.
A staircase descended.
They entered.
THE REAL ARCHIVE
The underground facility was enormous.
Servers stretched as far as Sloane could see.
Thousands of blue lights blinked.
Gabriel whispered:
“This is the heart of Blackstone.”
Sloane walked forward.
Then she saw something.
A glass room.
Inside—
Alexander.
He was tied to a chair.
Blood stained his shirt.
Sloane rushed toward him.
“Alexander!”
His head lifted.
“Sloane?”
She stopped.
A speaker activated.
Marcus's voice filled the room.
“Welcome.”
Sloane looked around.
“Where are you?”
“You don't need to see me.”
“Let him go.”
“Not yet.”
Sloane's fists tightened.
“What do you want?”
“You know.”
“The trust.”
“Yes.”
“You want control.”
“Yes.”
“You want the Caldwell Protocol.”
“Yes.”
“And after I give it to you?”
Marcus laughed.
“You die.”
Gabriel stepped forward.
“You won't touch her.”
Marcus's voice became colder.
“Gabriel.”
Sloane froze.
“You know him?”
“Of course.”
Marcus laughed.
“My beloved brother.”
Gabriel's face hardened.
“You're finished.”
“No.”
Marcus answered calmly.
“I'm just beginning.”
A door opened.
A small girl was pushed into the room.
Sloane's heart broke.
She was about seven years old.
Terrified.
She looked at Alexander.
“Uncle?”
Alexander's face changed.
Sloane stared.
“This is Grant's daughter.”
Marcus spoke.
“Yes.”
The little girl began crying.
Sloane stepped forward.
“Let her go.”
Marcus laughed.
“Activate the system.”
Sloane looked at the terminal.
Then at Alexander.
Then at the child.
She understood.
Marcus had finally created the one situation where she couldn't simply choose freedom.
He had put innocent lives on the line.
And now—
she had to decide whether to surrender the most powerful system in the world…
or watch her family die.
Sloane slowly approached the terminal.
Marcus's voice whispered:
“Good girl.”
Sloane stopped.
She looked at the screen.
Then smiled.
Because Marcus had made one final mistake.
He had assumed she was alone.
But she wasn't.
Behind the server wall, another figure stepped from the shadows.
Elena.
Alive.
And holding a device in her hand.
She looked at Sloane.
Then whispered:
“Now.”
Sloane pressed the screen.
The entire facility went dark.
May you like
And Marcus screamed:
“No!”
