CHAPTER 11 — THE CHILD THEY WERE ALL HIDING

The word extraction echoed in Sloane's mind.

She didn't wait.

She ran.

“Lily!”

Alexander followed her.

Vivian grabbed Elena's arm.

“Too late.”

Elena looked at her sharply.

“What do you mean?”

Vivian's expression was grim.

“They've already found her.”

THE EMPTY ROOM

Sloane reached the hotel suite.

The door was open.

The nurse was unconscious on the floor.

The curtains were moving in the cold night air.

And Lily was gone.

Sloane stopped breathing.

“No.”

Alexander rushed inside.

“Lily!”

Nothing.

Sloane ran to the bed.

A small stuffed rabbit lay on the pillow.

Lily's favorite toy.

Beside it was a piece of paper.

Sloane picked it up.

Three words were written across it.

BRING THE KEY.

Her hands began shaking.

“They took her.”

Alexander looked at the security monitor.

“Not just her.”

He pointed.

“Look.”

Grant was missing too.

Sloane closed her eyes.

Marcus had taken both of them.

And this time, he hadn't left a negotiation.

He had left a threat.

THE MESSAGE

Sloane's phone rang.

She answered.

A man's voice spoke.

“You have six hours.”

“Where is Lily?”

“Safe.”

“Where is Grant?”

“Alive.”

“If you hurt them—”

“You'll do exactly what you're told.”

Sloane gripped the phone.

“What do you want?”

“The Caldwell master key.”

“You already have the bracelet.”

“No.”

The voice laughed.

“That was only the container.”

Sloane's eyes narrowed.

“Then what is the key?”

“You.”

Silence.

The voice continued.

“Your blood. Your memories. Your authorization.”

Sloane swallowed.

“Who are you?”

“You know me.”

The line went dead.

A video arrived immediately.

Sloane opened it.

Grant appeared.

He was tied to a chair.

Lily sat beside him.

She was crying.

Then the camera moved.

A man stepped into frame.

Sloane's heart stopped.

Gabriel.

Her father.

He looked directly at the camera.

“You should have listened when I told you to walk away.”

Sloane whispered:

“Dad…”

Gabriel smiled.

“Bring Alexander.”

Sloane froze.

“Why?”

“Because the system needs both of you.”

THE TRUTH ABOUT GABRIEL

Elena walked toward the screen.

“Gabriel.”

He looked at her.

“Elena.”

“You promised.”

“I promised many things.”

“You promised to protect her.”

“I am protecting her.”

“You kidnapped her.”

“I rescued her.”

Sloane stared at her mother.

“What is he talking about?”

Elena's face was filled with shame.

“Gabriel believes Lily is the final safeguard.”

Sloane looked at the screen.

“What safeguard?”

Gabriel answered:

“The one your mother never told you about.”

Sloane's eyes hardened.

“Tell me.”

Gabriel smiled.

“You think Blackstone is finished.”

“It is.”

“No.”

“You think the Caldwell Project is gone.”

“It is.”

“No.”

“You think the system can't be controlled.”

Gabriel laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

The screen changed.

A map appeared.

Underneath it was a name:

PROJECT EDEN.

Sloane stared.

“What is Eden?”

Gabriel answered:

“The system that comes after Blackstone.”

PROJECT EDEN

Elena closed her eyes.

She knew.

Sloane turned toward her.

“You knew about this.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn't tell me.”

“I was trying to destroy it.”

“But you failed.”

“Yes.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“What does Eden do?”

Elena hesitated.

“It doesn't control money.”

“Then what?”

“It controls identity.”

Silence.

Sloane frowned.

“Identity?”

“Birth records.”

“Citizenship.”

“Financial profiles.”

“Medical records.”

“Criminal records.”

“Travel documents.”

“Everything.”

Alexander stared.

“A person could disappear.”

“Yes.”

“Or be created.”

“Yes.”

Sloane finally understood.

“That's how Gabriel erased himself.”

Elena nodded.

“And that's how Marcus built his network.”

Sloane stared at the screen.

“So Eden can rewrite reality.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Exactly.”

WHY LILY MATTERS

Sloane looked at Lily.

“Why her?”

Gabriel answered.

“Because she was born after the system was modified.”

“Modified how?”

“Her genetic signature was used as the final encryption.”

Sloane's eyes widened.

“She's a key.”

“No.”

Gabriel shook his head.

“She is the lock.”

Sloane stared.

“What does that mean?”

“If Eden activates, Lily is the only person who can permanently shut it down.”

Sloane's expression changed.

“So that's why you took her.”

“Yes.”

“To control her.”

“No.”

“To protect her.”

Sloane laughed bitterly.

“Kidnapping a seven-year-old isn't protection.”

Gabriel's face hardened.

“You don't understand what is coming.”

“Then explain.”

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because someone else is listening.”

Sloane looked around.

The hotel cameras.

The phones.

The lights.

Everything suddenly seemed dangerous.

Gabriel whispered:

“Trust no one.”

Then the screen went black.

THE SECOND BETRAYAL

Sloane turned toward Vivian.

“You knew.”

Vivian nodded.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wasn't sure which side you were on.”

Sloane stepped closer.

“Which side?”

Vivian looked at Elena.

“Your mother has been hiding something.”

Elena's face went pale.

Sloane turned.

“What?”

Elena didn't answer.

Vivian pulled out a photograph.

It showed Elena.

Standing beside Marcus.

And behind them—

a newborn baby.

Sloane stared.

“That isn't me.”

“No.”

“Who is it?”

Elena closed her eyes.

“My second child.”

Alexander froze.

“You had another child?”

Elena nodded.

“I thought she died.”

Sloane stared.

“Who?”

Elena whispered:

“Vivian.”

Sloane looked at the woman beside her.

Vivian smiled sadly.

“I wasn't created by Marcus.”

“I was born.”

“Yes.”

“You're my sister.”

“Yes.”

Sloane's world shifted.

Again.

THE FAMILY TREE

Elena finally told them everything.

She had given birth to two daughters.

Sloane first.

Vivian three years later.

But Marcus had taken Vivian.

He told Elena the child had died.

He lied.

Vivian had been raised inside the Caldwell laboratories.

Trained.

Studied.

Modified.

Turned into a living backup.

Sloane looked at Vivian.

“What did they do to you?”

Vivian looked away.

“They taught me that love was weakness.”

Sloane's eyes filled with tears.

“And did you believe them?”

“For a long time.”

“What changed?”

Vivian looked at her.

“You.”

Sloane didn't understand.

“You're the first person who looked at me like a person.”

Sloane reached for her hand.

Vivian hesitated.

Then took it.

For the first time, the two sisters stood together.

THE PLAN

Alexander opened a map.

“We have six hours.”

Sloane nodded.

“We need Lily.”

“And Grant.”

“Yes.”

“And Gabriel.”

Sloane looked at him.

“We don't necessarily need Gabriel alive.”

Elena immediately said:

“No.”

Sloane turned.

“Why?”

“Because if Gabriel dies, Eden activates.”

Sloane froze.

“What?”

“Gabriel is the biological administrator.”

Alexander stared.

“Then why did the system recognize Sloane?”

“Because she is the master override.”

“And Lily?”

“The lock.”

Alexander slowly understood.

“So the three of them together can either activate or destroy Eden.”

Elena nodded.

“Exactly.”

Sloane looked at the clock.

Five hours and twenty minutes remained.

“Then we find them.”

THE ABANDONED STATION

The first clue came from Grant.

His wedding ring.

Security had found its signal near an abandoned railway station.

Sloane, Alexander, Vivian and Elena arrived together.

The station was deserted.

No trains.

No passengers.

Only rain.

Sloane walked through the dark corridor.

“Grant?”

Nothing.

Then a light turned on.

A phone sat on a bench.

It began ringing.

Sloane answered.

“Hello?”

Grant's voice came through.

“Sloane.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Is Lily with you?”

“Yes.”

“Put her on.”

A pause.

Then Lily whispered:

“Sloane?”

Sloane closed her eyes.

“I'm here.”

“I knew you'd come.”

“I promised.”

Lily began crying.

“I knew you wouldn't leave me.”

Sloane's heart broke.

“Where are you?”

Lily answered:

“Under the house.”

Sloane frowned.

“What house?”

“The house with the red door.”

Sloane looked at Elena.

Elena's face changed.

“There is only one.”

“Where?”

Elena whispered:

“Where Sloane was born.”

THE RED DOOR

They returned to the old house.

The nursery was exactly as they had left it.

But behind the fireplace—

they found a red door.

Sloane stared.

“I've never seen this.”

Elena nodded.

“Marcus built it.”

They opened it.

A staircase descended.

At the bottom was another laboratory.

But this one was much older.

Rust covered the walls.

Old photographs hung everywhere.

Sloane saw herself as a baby.

Vivian.

Alexander.

Marcus.

Gabriel.

Elena.

They were all connected.

At the center of the room was a glass chamber.

Inside—

a child-sized chair.

Sloane's stomach turned.

“This is where they trained Vivian.”

Vivian stepped forward.

“I remember.”

Sloane looked at her.

“You were here.”

“Yes.”

“How old?”

“Five.”

Sloane's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm sorry.”

Vivian shook her head.

“You didn't do it.”

A door slammed.

Everyone turned.

Grant stood there.

His hands were free.

Lily was beside him.

Sloane rushed forward.

“Lily!”

The girl ran into her arms.

Sloane held her tightly.

“I'm sorry.”

Lily cried against her.

“I knew you'd come.”

Grant looked exhausted.

Sloane stared at him.

“How did you escape?”

Grant shook his head.

“I didn't.”

Sloane froze.

“What?”

Grant looked behind him.

“I was released.”

The lights went out.

A voice echoed through the laboratory.

“Because I wanted you here.”

Gabriel stepped into the room.

FATHER AGAINST FATHER

Sloane moved Lily behind her.

Gabriel looked at her.

“You came.”

“Yes.”

“You brought everyone.”

“Yes.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Good.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

Gabriel looked at him.

“You.”

Alexander froze.

“Why?”

“Because you're the original successor.”

Sloane stepped between them.

“No.”

Gabriel sighed.

“You still think you can protect everyone.”

“I can try.”

“That's your mother's weakness.”

Elena stepped forward.

“You don't get to talk about weakness.”

Gabriel looked at her.

“You chose him.”

“I chose our daughter.”

“You chose the wrong daughter.”

Elena's face changed.

Gabriel looked at Sloane.

“Vivian was supposed to be the successor.”

Sloane stared.

“What?”

“Yes.”

Vivian looked at him.

“You're lying.”

“No.”

Gabriel smiled.

“You were created to replace Sloane.”

Vivian shook her head.

“No.”

“You were stronger.”

“No.”

“You were obedient.”

“No.”

“You were perfect.”

Vivian looked at Sloane.

Then smiled.

“I wasn't perfect.”

She stepped forward.

“I was human.”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“And that's why you failed.”

He raised his weapon.

Sloane pulled Lily down.

Alexander tackled Gabriel.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the ceiling.

Everyone screamed.

Grant rushed toward Lily.

Elena grabbed Vivian.

The room descended into chaos.

Then—

the laboratory doors locked.

A countdown appeared.

10:00

Gabriel's voice came through the speakers.

“You have ten minutes.”

Sloane looked at the screen.

“What happens at zero?”

Gabriel smiled.

“Eden wakes.”

The countdown began.

09:59

Sloane looked at Elena.

“Tell me how to stop it.”

Elena stared at the system.

Then at Lily.

Then at Vivian.

And finally—

at Sloane.

“There is only one way.”

“What?”

Elena's voice trembled.

“One of you has to die.”

Sloane froze.

Alexander stared.

Vivian stopped breathing.

Lily began crying.

And the countdown continued.

09:42

09:41

09:40

Sloane looked at her mother.

“No.”

Elena whispered:

“I'm sorry.”

Sloane shook her head.

“You've lied enough.”

She looked at the system.

“There's another way.”

Elena stared.

“What?”

Sloane stepped toward the terminal.

“I built one.”

She placed Lily's hand against the scanner.

Then Vivian's.

Then Alexander's.

The system flashed.

THREE GENETIC AUTHORIZATIONS DETECTED.

Sloane smiled.

“Maybe Eden doesn't need one successor.”

She looked at her family.

“Maybe it needs all of us.”

The screen went black.

Then one sentence appeared:

FAMILY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Gabriel's smile disappeared.

“No.”

Sloane looked toward him.

“Yes.”

The countdown stopped.

09:21

Then began counting backward.

09:20

09:19

For the first time—

Gabriel looked afraid.

And Sloane finally understood.

They hadn't discovered a way to destroy Eden.

They had discovered a way to make it choose.

May you like

And now—

it was choosing them.
