CHAPTER 12 — THE FAMILY PROTOCOL

The countdown stopped.

For the first time since they had entered the underground laboratory, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The screen above the terminal displayed a single sentence:

FAMILY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Gabriel stared at it.

His face had lost all color.

“No.”

Sloane turned toward him.

“What?”

He shook his head.

“You don't understand what you've activated.”

“Then explain it.”

“You've linked yourselves.”

“To each other?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Blood.”

Sloane looked at Lily.

Then Vivian.

Then Alexander.

The system had recognized all four of them.

But there was something else.

A fifth name appeared.

ELENA CALDWELL.

Sloane's eyes widened.

“Mom.”

Elena stared at the screen.

“I didn't authorize anything.”

Sloane shook her head.

“You didn't have to.”

The system displayed another message.

PRIMARY ARCHITECT DETECTED.

Elena whispered:

“It recognized me.”

Gabriel laughed bitterly.

“Of course it did.”

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“You finally activated the protocol your mother spent twenty years trying to bury.”

Sloane stepped closer.

“What does Family Protocol do?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“It removes the administrator.”

Sloane frowned.

“From Eden?”

“Yes.”

“Then what's the problem?”

Gabriel's expression hardened.

“It replaces the administrator with the family.”

Silence.

Alexander stared at the screen.

“You mean all of us?”

“Yes.”

“And what happens to the system?”

Gabriel answered:

“It obeys you.”

Sloane looked at Elena.

“And that's bad?”

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Gabriel.

“That's terrifying.”

THE FIVE KEYS

The terminal opened.

Five circles appeared.

Each contained a name.

ELENA

SLOANE

VIVIAN

ALEXANDER

LILY

Sloane stared.

“Five keys.”

Elena nodded.

“Each one represents a different authorization layer.”

“What about Gabriel?”

His name didn't appear.

Sloane looked at him.

“Why aren't you included?”

Gabriel smiled sadly.

“Because I was never supposed to survive the final stage.”

The room went silent.

Elena's face tightened.

“Gabriel…”

He looked at her.

“You knew.”

“I thought you had changed.”

“I did.”

“Then why?”

“Because Eden was designed to eliminate anyone who knew too much.”

Sloane stared.

“You built a system that would eventually kill you?”

Gabriel shook his head.

“Marcus built it.”

“And you helped.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I could control him.”

Sloane's voice became cold.

“You couldn't.”

“No.”

“You destroyed lives.”

“Yes.”

“You erased people.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“And you expect forgiveness?”

Gabriel looked at her.

“No.”

He paused.

“I only want you to survive.”

THE LOCKED DOOR

A heavy metallic sound came from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

A door opened.

A man walked inside.

Sloane immediately recognized him.

Marcus.

The man who had been arrested.

Except—

this Marcus was older.

His hair was gray.

His face was scarred.

He smiled.

“Hello, Sloane.”

She froze.

“There are two of you.”

Marcus looked at Gabriel.

“Three.”

Gabriel stepped backward.

Sloane stared between them.

“Which one is real?”

Marcus laughed.

“That question destroyed our family.”

Gabriel said nothing.

Marcus walked toward the terminal.

“The man sitting in prison is my brother.”

Sloane looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

Marcus continued.

“He stole my name.”

Gabriel whispered:

“Because you were going to kill Elena.”

Marcus stopped.

“And you betrayed me.”

“Yes.”

“You stole my daughter.”

“No.”

“I protected her.”

“You manipulated her.”

Marcus looked at Sloane.

“Did he tell you why he disappeared?”

Sloane said nothing.

Marcus smiled.

“He didn't disappear.”

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

“He was hiding.”

Marcus laughed.

“He was running.”

Sloane stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Both men looked at her.

“You've spent my entire life telling me half-truths.”

She pointed toward the terminal.

“No more.”

She looked at Marcus.

“Why did you create Eden?”

Marcus answered:

“To make sure nobody could ever take power from the Caldwell family.”

Sloane frowned.

“You wanted permanent control.”

“Yes.”

“Then why create Family Protocol?”

Marcus looked surprised.

“I didn't.”

Sloane turned toward Elena.

Her mother whispered:

“I did.”

ELENA'S CONFESSION

Sloane stared at her mother.

“You created it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After Vivian was taken.”

Vivian froze.

Elena continued.

“I realized the system was too dangerous to belong to one person.”

“So you divided the authorization.”

“Yes.”

“Between your children.”

“Yes.”

“Why five keys?”

“Because I wanted every generation to have a voice.”

Sloane looked at Lily.

“Even her?”

Elena nodded.

“Especially her.”

Lily looked frightened.

“Why me?”

Elena knelt beside her.

“Because you were born outside the system.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means they couldn't predict you.”

Lily looked at Sloane.

“Am I special?”

Sloane smiled.

“You're safe.”

Lily nodded.

Elena looked at Sloane.

“That is what matters.”

THE REAL ENEMY

Suddenly the terminal flashed.

EXTERNAL ACCESS DETECTED.

Alexander looked at the screen.

“Someone is accessing Eden.”

Sloane's heart sank.

“Who?”

The system displayed:

UNKNOWN USER

Then:

ACCESS LEVEL: 99%

Elena stared.

“That can't be.”

Marcus smiled.

“It has begun.”

Sloane turned toward him.

“What?”

“The system doesn't need me.”

“Then who?”

Marcus pointed toward Lily.

“It needs her.”

Sloane immediately moved in front of the child.

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You misunderstand.”

“What?”

“Lily isn't the lock.”

Sloane froze.

“What is she?”

Marcus whispered:

“The administrator.”

Everyone went silent.

Elena stared at the screen.

“No.”

Marcus nodded.

“The final version of Eden was built around her.”

Sloane looked at Lily.

The child was trembling.

“Why would you create an administrator who is seven years old?”

Marcus answered:

“Because nobody suspects a child.”

Sloane felt sick.

“You planned this before she was born.”

“Yes.”

“Grant knew?”

Marcus smiled.

“Grant knew nothing.”

Sloane's eyes narrowed.

“Then who is Lily's real father?”

Marcus looked at her.

“That's the question you should be asking.”

GRANT'S SECRET

A door opened.

Grant walked into the laboratory.

His face was pale.

Sloane stared at him.

“Grant?”

He looked at Lily.

Then at Sloane.

“I need to tell you something.”

Sloane stepped forward.

“Did you know about Eden?”

“No.”

“Did you know Lily was involved?”

“No.”

“Then why did Marcus call her his successor?”

Grant looked at Elena.

She answered for him.

“Because Lily isn't Grant's biological daughter.”

Grant's eyes closed.

Sloane stared.

“What?”

Grant whispered:

“I raised her.”

“But you're not her father.”

“No.”

“Who is?”

Grant looked at Marcus.

Then Gabriel.

Then Elena.

Finally, he looked at Sloane.

“You.”

Sloane froze.

“What?”

Grant's voice broke.

“Lily is your daughter.”

The room became completely silent.

Sloane couldn't breathe.

“No.”

Elena began crying.

“Sloane…”

“No.”

She stepped backward.

“You told me I couldn't have children.”

Elena looked down.

“I lied.”

Sloane stared at her mother.

“You took my baby?”

“No.”

“You gave her to Grant?”

“I saved her.”

Sloane shook her head violently.

“She is my daughter?”

“Yes.”

Lily looked at Sloane.

“Mom?”

That one word shattered Sloane.

She dropped to her knees.

Lily ran into her arms.

Sloane held her tightly.

“I didn't know.”

Lily cried.

“It's okay.”

“No.”

Sloane kissed her hair.

“It isn't.”

She looked toward Elena.

“You stole seven years from me.”

Elena sobbed.

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

THE NIGHT LILY WAS BORN

Elena finally told the truth.

Seven years earlier, Sloane had given birth to a daughter.

Marcus discovered the pregnancy.

He wanted the child because the baby's genetic sequence contained the final Eden authorization.

Sloane was unconscious after the delivery.

Elena had one chance.

She took the baby.

She gave her to Grant.

She told Sloane the child had died.

Grant raised Lily under a false identity.

For seven years, Lily had lived believing Grant was her father.

But Grant had protected her.

He had never told Marcus where she was.

Until now.

Sloane looked at Grant.

“You knew she was mine.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Marcus would have killed her.”

Sloane's voice softened.

“You could have trusted me.”

Grant nodded.

“I should have.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Sloane looked at Lily.

Grant continued.

“I knew I had failed you.”

“You did.”

“I knew you hated me.”

“I did.”

“But I never stopped protecting her.”

Sloane looked at him.

For the first time, she saw something beyond betrayal.

Regret.

Real regret.

She didn't forgive him.

Not yet.

But she understood.

THE FINAL CHOICE

The system began counting down again.

05:00

Elena looked at the screen.

“We're running out of time.”

Sloane held Lily's hand.

“What happens at zero?”

Eden activates.

“And if it activates?”

“Every identity connected to the system becomes editable.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Then we shut it down.”

Elena shook her head.

“We can't.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily is the only person who can authorize the final shutdown.”

Sloane looked at her daughter.

“No.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“She has to choose.”

“She is seven.”

“I know.”

“She doesn't understand.”

“She doesn't need to.”

Sloane stared.

“What do you mean?”

Elena pointed toward the screen.

“The system doesn't need intelligence.”

“It needs consent.”

Sloane looked at Lily.

The terminal displayed:

FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Lily stared at it.

“What's that?”

Sloane knelt beside her.

“You don't have to do anything.”

Lily looked up.

“Will it hurt?”

“No.”

“Will it save everyone?”

Sloane hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Lily thought for a moment.

Then she asked:

“Will it save Daddy?”

She looked toward Grant.

Sloane's heart broke.

“Yes.”

Lily looked at Alexander.

“And Uncle Alexander?”

“Yes.”

She looked at Vivian.

“And Aunt Vivian?”

“Yes.”

Finally, she looked at Elena.

“And Grandma?”

Elena began crying.

“Yes.”

Lily looked at Sloane.

“And you?”

Sloane smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

Lily nodded.

“Then I'll do it.”

THE LAST AUTHORIZATION

Sloane lifted Lily toward the terminal.

The little girl placed her hand against the scanner.

The system flashed.

CHILD AUTHORIZATION DETECTED.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED.

Then:

FINAL QUESTION.

The screen displayed:

DO YOU CHOOSE CONTROL OR FREEDOM?

Lily looked at Sloane.

“What does freedom mean?”

Sloane answered:

“It means nobody owns you.”

Lily thought for a second.

“I choose that.”

She pressed the screen.

The entire facility shook.

Every server shut down.

One after another.

The lights went dark.

Eden disappeared.

The screens went black.

Then a final message appeared:

SYSTEM TERMINATED.

Everyone stood frozen.

Sloane pulled Lily into her arms.

“It worked.”

Alexander laughed in disbelief.

Vivian began crying.

Elena covered her face.

Grant lowered his head.

But Marcus—

was smiling.

Sloane looked at him.

“Why are you smiling?”

Marcus answered:

“Because you still don't know where Eden's backup is.”

Sloane's expression changed.

“What backup?”

Marcus pointed toward the floor.

“The system wasn't stored here.”

A deep mechanical rumble sounded beneath them.

The floor began opening.

Marcus smiled.

“It was underneath your hotel.”

Sloane froze.

The very hotel she had spent years building.

The hotel she thought was finally hers.

The hotel where Grant had betrayed her.

The hotel where the entire war had begun.

Marcus whispered:

“Your hotel was never a hotel.”

The floor split open.

A massive elevator descended into darkness.

And on the wall below them—

five words appeared:

WELCOME TO PROJECT EDEN TWO.

Sloane stared into the darkness.

Then Lily squeezed her hand.

“Mom?”

Sloane looked down.

“Yes?”

“Are we going home?”

Sloane looked at the impossible machine beneath them.

Then at her family.

“No.”

May you like

She took Lily's hand.

“We're finishing this.”
