CHAPTER 9: The Hunt for Charles Caldwell Begins

The note remained on the dining table.

No one touched it.

No one spoke.

Detective Olivia Grant read the final sentence again.

You'll never find the others.

The words echoed through the silent mansion.

Sergeant Daniel Brooks looked toward the staircase.

Then back at the note.

"He wants us to believe he's already won."

Olivia slowly folded the paper into an evidence bag.

"Maybe."

She paused.

"Or maybe..."

"...he's terrified we'll prove he hasn't."

THE MANHUNT

Within thirty minutes, Charles Caldwell's photograph appeared on law enforcement databases across California.

WANTED FOR QUESTIONING

Then, after the discovery beneath the vineyard—

The alert changed.

WANTED FOR MURDER, CONSPIRACY, AND OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

Highway Patrol.

Airport Security.

U.S. Marshals.

County Sheriff's Offices.

Every agency received the same instruction.

Do not approach alone.

Inside the command center, phones rang nonstop.

News helicopters circled above the vineyard.

Reporters crowded behind police barricades.

The Caldwell family had become national headlines.

Not because of wealth.

Not because of their famous wines.

Because investigators had uncovered a body beneath one of California's most prestigious estates.

THE PRESS CONFERENCE

District Attorney Rebecca Lawson stepped before dozens of cameras.

"We can confirm that investigators have recovered human remains from the Caldwell vineyard."

Microphones pushed closer.

"Has the victim been identified?"

Rebecca nodded.

"We have reason to believe the remains belong to Rebecca Anne Moore, who disappeared eleven years ago."

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

"Is Charles Caldwell a suspect?"

"He is now the subject of an active homicide investigation."

Another reporter shouted,

"Are there more victims?"

Rebecca remained calm.

"We are following every piece of evidence."

She refused to say more.

But the damage was done.

Within minutes...

Every television network in the country carried the story.

THE SAFE HOUSE

Claire watched the press conference from a government safe house outside Sacramento.

The building was modest.

No luxury.

No ocean view.

No marble floors.

Yet for the first time in years...

She felt safe.

Detective Olivia entered carrying two cups of coffee.

"They're calling this the biggest criminal investigation in Napa County history."

Claire stared at the television.

"I never wanted any of this."

"I know."

"I only wanted them to leave my condo alone."

Olivia smiled sadly.

"Sometimes the smallest act of resistance..."

"...uncovers the biggest crimes."

Claire looked down at her bandaged hands.

"I keep thinking about Emily."

"And Rebecca."

She swallowed hard.

"If I'd said yes that night..."

Olivia finished the sentence.

"They would've kept getting away with it."

ADRIAN'S CELL

Adrian Caldwell sat alone in the county detention center.

The television mounted high on the wall showed the same breaking news.

His father's photograph.

His mother's photograph.

Crime scene footage from the vineyard.

He stared at the screen without blinking.

A correctional officer stopped outside his cell.

"You've got a visitor."

Adrian looked up.

"My lawyer?"

"No."

The officer unlocked the interview room.

Maya was waiting.

She looked exhausted.

Dark circles framed her eyes.

But she stood tall.

Adrian frowned.

"You came to help me?"

Maya's answer came quietly.

"I came to say goodbye."

Silence.

"You testified against me."

"I told the truth."

He shook his head.

"You're destroying this family."

Maya looked directly into his eyes.

"No."

Her voice remained steady.

"The family destroyed itself."

Adrian leaned forward.

"You think Claire cares about you?"

"This isn't about Claire."

"Then why?"

Maya took a slow breath.

"Because Emily deserved justice."

His expression changed.

Then he laughed.

"So that's what this is."

"Emily."

His laughter faded.

"You still believe she was innocent."

Maya frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Adrian's smile disappeared.

"You don't know everything."

THE CONFESSION THAT WASN'T

Maya stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Adrian looked toward the security camera.

Then lowered his voice.

"Emily stole something."

"What?"

He hesitated.

"My father's ledger."

Maya's heartbeat quickened.

"The same ledger police found?"

Adrian nodded.

"She wasn't trying to run away."

"She was trying to expose us."

He suddenly realized what he had admitted.

His face went pale.

Maya slowly stood.

"Thank you."

Adrian frowned.

"For what?"

She walked toward the door.

"For confirming she never abandoned anyone."

The heavy steel door closed behind her.

Adrian slammed his fist against the table.

He had just destroyed the final lie protecting his family.

THE FORENSIC REPORT

That evening...

The medical examiner completed the preliminary examination of Rebecca Moore's remains.

Olivia received the report first.

She read every page carefully.

Then stopped.

Cause of death.

Blunt force trauma to the skull.

Estimated time of death.

Eleven years.

Evidence of healed fractures.

Multiple.

Repeated.

Rebecca hadn't been murdered during a single violent incident.

She had been abused for months.

Perhaps years.

At the bottom of the report...

Another line caught Olivia's attention.

Fracture pattern consistent with impact from a heavy ceramic object.

She closed her eyes.

A plate.

Just like Claire.

THE UNEXPECTED VISITOR

Late that night...

Claire couldn't sleep.

Rain tapped softly against the windows of the safe house.

A security officer knocked.

"Miss Bennett."

"There's someone here asking for you."

Claire frowned.

"Who?"

"He wouldn't give his name."

Olivia immediately stood.

"No."

The officer nodded.

"I told him that."

"But..."

"He left something."

He handed Claire a small envelope.

There was no return address.

Only her name.

Written by hand.

Claire carefully opened it.

Inside...

Was an old Polaroid photograph.

Emily.

Rebecca.

And a third young woman Claire had never seen before.

All three were smiling.

Standing in front of the Caldwell vineyard.

Written across the bottom in faded blue ink:

Friends Forever — Summer Festival

Claire turned the photograph over.

A sentence had been written in fresh black marker.

One of us is still alive.

Claire felt the blood drain from her face.

Olivia took the photograph.

Her eyes widened.

"That's impossible."

Rebecca was dead.

Emily was presumed dead.

Which meant...

The third woman.

The unknown woman.

Had survived.

Somewhere...

There was a living witness who knew exactly what had happened inside the Caldwell family.

May you like

And someone wanted Claire to find her...

Before Charles Caldwell did.
