CHAPTER 10: The Last Woman Who Escaped

The photograph lay on the table between Claire and Detective Olivia Grant.
Three young women smiled at the camera.
Rebecca Moore.
Emily Foster.
And the unidentified brunette.
The picture had been taken years before fear had entered their lives.
Before one vanished.
Before another disappeared.
Before the third became the most important witness in California.
Olivia studied every detail.
The date stamp.
The background.
The handwritten note.
Then she turned the photograph over again.
One of us is still alive.
Someone had written the message recently.
Not eleven years ago.
The ink was fresh.
Which meant only one thing.
Someone knew the third woman was alive.
And someone had managed to reach the safe house without being seen.
THE SECURITY FOOTAGE
Olivia immediately called the security team.
"I want every camera checked."
Within minutes, technicians pulled recordings from every entrance.
The mystery visitor never appeared.
No face.
No vehicle.
No footprints.
Only one camera caught anything unusual.
At exactly 9:47 p.m., a courier wearing a hooded raincoat walked to the front gate.
He placed the envelope inside the mailbox.
Then disappeared into the darkness before the guard reached the entrance.
His face remained hidden the entire time.
Professional.
Deliberate.
Olivia frowned.
"This wasn't random."
Claire nodded.
"They wanted us to find the photograph."
A NAME IN THE MARGIN
The forensic lab scanned the Polaroid at high resolution.
Technician Marcus Lee enlarged the image.
Most of it revealed nothing new.
Until he zoomed into the bottom-right corner.
Partially hidden beneath Emily's hand...
Was the edge of a festival badge.
Only three letters remained visible.
HAN...
Marcus sharpened the image.
Another faint line appeared.
...NAH
He looked at Olivia.
"I think that's a name."
"Hannah?"
Marcus nodded.
"It fits."
Olivia immediately contacted missing-persons databases.
There was only one woman connected to Napa's Summer Festival, Rebecca Moore, and Emily Foster.
Hannah Brooks.
Age twenty-nine when she disappeared from public records.
Official status:
Alive.
Current location:
Unknown.
CHARLES MAKES HIS MOVE
Hundreds of miles away...
Charles Caldwell sat inside a remote hunting cabin hidden in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
A battery-powered radio played softly on the table.
News anchors discussed the investigation.
The discovery beneath the vineyard.
The nationwide manhunt.
Charles calmly switched the radio off.
Across the room...
Richard Holloway paced nervously.
"We need to leave the country."
Charles poured coffee into a tin cup.
"No."
Richard stared.
"You've lost everything."
Charles smiled faintly.
"Not yet."
He reached into a locked wooden chest.
Inside were several passports.
Cash.
Satellite phones.
And another leather journal.
Much older than Emily's.
Across the cover was written:
Project Legacy
Richard looked uneasy.
"What is that?"
Charles closed the lid.
"The reason no one can ever find Hannah."
CLAIRE GOES HOME
Two days later...
Doctors officially discharged Claire.
Instead of returning to her Mission Bay condominium...
She insisted on visiting it.
Olivia objected.
"It's still risky."
"I know."
"But I need to see it."
A convoy of police vehicles escorted Claire through San Francisco.
When they arrived...
She froze.
The front door stood slightly open.
Police tape fluttered in the wind.
Officers exchanged worried glances.
"No one should have been here."
Sergeant Brooks slowly drew his weapon.
"Everyone stay behind me."
The apartment was silent.
Nothing appeared stolen.
Furniture remained untouched.
Books still lined the shelves.
Then Claire noticed something.
A single white envelope resting on her dining table.
It hadn't been there before.
Her name was written across the front.
Inside...
A typed letter.
You refused to surrender your home.
Now your home belongs to ghosts.
At the bottom...
One sentence had been handwritten in blue ink.
Ask Hannah what happened in the wine cellar.
Claire looked at Olivia.
"They know we're looking for her."
Olivia nodded.
"And they want us to find her..."
She paused.
"...or they're trying to lead us into a trap."
MAYA REMEMBERS SOMETHING
That evening...
Maya sat alone in the hospital rehabilitation room.
She stared at the photograph again.
Then suddenly...
Her eyes widened.
"I know her."
Olivia turned.
"The third woman?"
Maya nodded slowly.
"Her name wasn't Hannah Brooks."
Silence filled the room.
"What?"
Maya pointed to the photograph.
"Emily used fake names whenever Charles suspected someone."
Olivia leaned closer.
"So who is she?"
Maya closed her eyes, forcing herself to remember.
Then whispered,
"Her real name was..."
"...Anna Hayes."
Olivia immediately searched the national database.
No missing person.
No death certificate.
No criminal record.
Nothing.
It was as if Anna Hayes had never existed.
THE LOCKER
Marcus Lee continued examining Emily's journal.
Near the back...
A folded receipt slipped from between the pages.
A train station locker receipt.
San Francisco Central Terminal.
Locker 312.
Rental date:
Six years earlier.
Expiration:
Never collected.
Olivia's pulse quickened.
"It can't still be there."
Marcus shrugged.
"Only one way to find out."
THE DISCOVERY
The next morning...
Claire, Olivia, and two deputies arrived at the old train station.
Most lockers had long since been replaced.
But the station manager recognized the receipt.
"Locker 312?"
He frowned.
"No one's ever claimed it."
He retrieved an old master key.
The rusted door creaked open.
Inside sat a faded blue backpack.
Covered in dust.
Claire carefully unzipped it.
Inside were clothes.
A wallet.
A disposable camera.
And a cassette recorder.
Marcus later recovered the audio.
The tape hissed with static.
Then Emily's voice emerged.
Soft.
Shaking.
"If you're hearing this..."
"I didn't make it."
A long silence followed.
Then another voice entered the recording.
Charles Caldwell.
Calm.
Cold.
Unmistakable.
"Bring Anna back. She knows too much."
The tape abruptly ended.
Olivia looked at Claire.
Claire looked back at her.
Neither needed to say it.
The third woman hadn't disappeared by accident.
She had been hunted.
And if she was still alive...
She had been running for six years.
Far from the Caldwell family.
Far from anyone who could betray her.
But now...
Someone had reopened the past.
Someone had sent the photograph.
Someone wanted Anna Hayes found.
The only question was—
May you like
Would Claire and Olivia reach her first...
Or would Charles Caldwell silence his last surviving victim before she could testify?
