CHAPTER 3: The Woman Who Disappeared Before Claire

The bedroom door slowly swung open.
Maya didn't wait.
The moment she heard the spare key slide into the lock, she grabbed the backpack and climbed through the French doors leading onto the second-floor balcony.
Cold night air hit her face.
Below, nearly fifteen feet down, stretched the carefully manicured gardens of the Caldwell estate.
There was no time to think.
Behind her, Eleanor's voice echoed through the bedroom.
"Maya!"
Maya jumped.
She landed hard on a flower bed, pain shooting through her ankle.
She bit her lip to keep from crying out.
Then she ran.
Inside the bedroom...
Eleanor stared at the open balcony doors.
The curtains fluttered in the night breeze.
Charles immediately noticed the empty space beneath Maya's bed.
"She took it."
Richard Holloway frowned.
"What?"
"The evidence."
Silence.
Eleanor slowly turned toward her husband.
"How much does she have?"
Charles answered quietly.
"I don't know."
Richard's expression darkened.
"Then pray she doesn't reach the police."
THE EMERGENCY ROOM
Claire lay beneath the bright lights of the emergency department.
The emergency physician carefully finished the last stitch above her temple.
"Twelve stitches."
He stepped back.
"The CT scan is clear."
Claire let out a slow breath.
"So... no brain injury?"
"Fortunately, no."
The doctor looked at her chart.
"But you have a concussion."
"You'll experience headaches, dizziness, and memory lapses for several days."
He paused.
"I strongly recommend you stay somewhere your husband cannot find you."
Claire gave a bitter smile.
"I wasn't planning to go home."
The doctor nodded.
"Good."
Before leaving, he hesitated.
"Mrs. Bennett..."
She corrected him automatically.
"Ms. Bennett."
The doctor smiled slightly.
"Ms. Bennett."
"You survived tonight."
His voice became gentle.
"Many women don't."
After he left...
Claire sat alone.
Those words lingered in her mind.
Many women don't.
THE DETECTIVE RETURNS
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
Detective Olivia Grant entered the room carrying a folder.
She closed the door behind her.
"How are you feeling?"
Claire managed a small smile.
"I've had better dinners."
Olivia almost laughed.
Almost.
Then she became serious again.
"I listened to the recording."
Claire studied her face.
"And?"
Olivia pulled out a chair.
"It wasn't just assault."
She laid several papers on the bed.
"The recording establishes coercion."
"Financial intimidation."
"Property extortion."
"And premeditated pressure."
Claire frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means tonight wasn't a family argument."
Olivia leaned forward.
"It appears they planned to force you into surrendering your property."
Claire nodded slowly.
"They've been talking about my condo for months."
"Did they ever threaten you before?"
Claire hesitated.
"Not directly."
"What about Adrian?"
Silence.
Then...
"Yes."
Olivia opened her notebook.
"Tell me everything."
THE FIRST SLAP
Claire stared out the hospital window.
"It started two years ago."
"With one slap."
Olivia remained silent.
Letting her continue.
"He apologized immediately."
"He cried."
"He bought flowers."
"He promised it would never happen again."
Claire laughed bitterly.
"It became his favorite sentence."
It will never happen again.
She looked down at her hands.
"I've heard it twelve times."
Olivia stopped writing.
"Twelve?"
Claire nodded.
"The plate wasn't the first assault."
"It was simply the first one they couldn't hide."
THE WOMAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH
Meanwhile...
Maya sped through the dark roads toward downtown Napa.
Her hands trembled on the steering wheel.
She kept checking the rearview mirror.
No headlights.
Not yet.
She finally stopped outside an all-night coffee shop.
Heart racing...
She opened the backpack.
The metal box was still there.
She lifted the faded photograph.
Emily Foster.
Twenty-nine years old.
Adrian's former fiancée.
Officially...
She had ended the engagement because they "wanted different things."
That was the story everyone believed.
The truth was very different.
Maya whispered softly.
"I'm sorry."
Then she reached into the envelope beneath the photograph.
Inside was a newspaper clipping from six years earlier.
LOCAL WOMAN MISSING AFTER LEAVING NAPA VALLEY ESTATE
Emily Foster.
Age 29.
Last seen driving away from the Caldwell vineyard.
Vehicle later found abandoned near the Sacramento River.
No body recovered.
Case remains unsolved.
Maya closed her eyes.
Claire wasn't Adrian's first victim.
Emily had been.
THE INTERROGATION
Back at the Sheriff's Department...
Adrian sat alone inside Interview Room Three.
His expensive suit was stained with wine and tiny specks of Claire's blood.
Sergeant Brooks entered.
Placed a file on the table.
"You have the right to remain silent."
Adrian smirked.
"I want my attorney."
"He's on his way."
Brooks sat down anyway.
"I only have one question."
Adrian crossed his arms.
"What?"
Brooks slid a photograph across the table.
It showed Claire's head wound.
Fresh.
Bleeding.
Deep.
"What happened here?"
Adrian looked at the picture.
Then looked away.
"I lost my temper."
Brooks said nothing.
The silence stretched.
Finally Adrian sighed.
"She embarrassed me."
Brooks raised an eyebrow.
"So you hit her."
"I didn't mean..."
Adrian stopped.
Too late.
Another admission.
Brooks quietly closed the folder.
"You know..."
He stood.
"In fifteen years as a police officer..."
"I've heard that sentence hundreds of times."
Adrian frowned.
"What sentence?"
"I lost my temper."
Brooks looked him directly in the eyes.
"Do you know what every abuser says after that?"
Silence.
Brooks answered for him.
"She made me do it."
Then he walked out.
Leaving Adrian alone with his thoughts.
THE PHONE CALL
Claire's hospital room phone suddenly rang.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then...
A young woman's trembling voice.
"Claire?"
"Yes."
"My name is Maya."
Claire immediately sat upright.
"Are you alright?"
"No."
Maya's breathing was uneven.
"They're looking for me."
Claire frowned.
"What happened?"
"I took something."
"What?"
A long pause.
Then Maya whispered the words that changed everything.
"I have proof."
"Proof that Adrian has done this before."
Claire's heart stopped.
"What do you mean?"
Maya took a shaky breath.
"There was another woman."
Silence.
"Before you."
Claire gripped the phone tighter.
"Who?"
"Her name was Emily Foster."
Another pause.
"And she disappeared."
The line suddenly filled with static.
Then Claire heard tires screeching.
A car horn.
Maya screamed.
"NO!"
The phone crashed onto the pavement.
The call disconnected.
Claire stared at the screen.
Her pulse pounded in her ears.
Someone had found Maya.
May you like
And whatever evidence she carried...
People were willing to kill for it.
