Chapter 4 — The Woman Who Betrayed Everyone

The first police vehicles arrived at Lawson Technologies just after sunrise.

No sirens.

No flashing lights.

Only quiet determination.

Employees gathered near the lobby windows, whispering as investigators stepped out carrying black evidence cases.

Andrew watched from across the street.

He hadn't been allowed inside the building since the day before.

Yet he couldn't force himself to leave.

A detective approached him.

"Mr. Andrew Lawson?"

Andrew nodded.

"We'll need you to answer a few questions regarding company finances."

Andrew straightened his jacket.

"My attorney will be present."

"Of course."

"But I'd advise you not to leave the city."

The detective handed him an official notice.

Financial Fraud Investigation.

Andrew stared at the paper until the detective walked away.

For the first time...

Fear replaced denial.

Across town...

Mariana sat quietly in her father's office.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city she had helped build.

Eduardo Escalante stood beside a bookshelf, watching his daughter.

"You don't look victorious."

Mariana smiled faintly.

"I'm not."

"You won."

"I lost something first."

Eduardo slowly nodded.

"When your mother left me years ago..."

"I thought revenge would heal me."

"It didn't."

"What healed me..."

"...was moving forward."

Mariana looked at the framed wedding photograph still sitting on her desk.

She picked it up.

Andrew's smile looked so genuine.

So sincere.

She wondered when it had disappeared.

Or whether it had ever been real.

Without another word...

She placed the frame into a drawer.

Then locked it.

She wasn't closing a drawer.

She was closing a chapter.

Meanwhile...

Brenda sat alone inside a luxury hotel suite.

The television played nonstop coverage of Lawson Technologies.

Every news channel carried the same story.

"Mystery Heiress Takes Control of Billion-Dollar Empire."

"Andrew Lawson Removed as CEO."

"Financial Investigation Underway."

Brenda muted the television.

Her hands shook as she looked around the room.

The designer handbags.

The jewelry.

The expensive dresses.

Almost all of it...

Had been purchased with company money.

Money investigators were now tracing.

A knock echoed through the suite.

Brenda hurried to the door.

Andrew walked inside.

He looked exhausted.

His tie was gone.

His eyes were bloodshot.

"We need to talk."

Brenda forced a smile.

"We'll get through this."

Andrew looked at her.

For the first time...

He noticed something he had ignored for years.

She wasn't worried about him.

She was worried about herself.

"Did you know?"

Brenda blinked.

"Know what?"

"That Mariana owned everything."

"Of course not."

Andrew stepped closer.

"Then explain this."

He threw a folder onto the table.

Inside were bank records.

Wire transfers.

Luxury purchases.

Every payment traced directly to Brenda.

Purchased with company funds.

She swallowed.

"Andrew..."

"You said it was your money."

"It wasn't."

Silence.

Then Brenda's expression changed.

No tears.

No guilt.

Only calculation.

"So what now?"

Andrew stared at her.

"You don't even care."

She crossed her arms.

"What do you expect me to do?"

"Cry?"

"The company is gone."

"The mansion is gone."

"The money is gone."

She laughed bitterly.

"I didn't fall in love with a bankrupt man."

The words hit harder than any slap.

Andrew slowly realized...

He was hearing his own cruelty reflected back at him.

The way he had once spoken to Mariana.

Now someone was speaking to him the same way.

Brenda picked up her purse.

"I think it's best if we stop seeing each other."

Andrew grabbed her arm.

"You're leaving me?"

She pulled away.

"No."

"I'm leaving the man who has nothing left."

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without turning around, she smiled.

"You know..."

"You and I deserve each other."

The door closed.

Andrew stood alone.

Again.

That afternoon...

Margaret arrived at Escalante Global Headquarters without an appointment.

She wore her finest designer suit.

Pearl necklace.

Diamond earrings.

Every symbol of the status she had spent decades protecting.

The receptionist smiled politely.

"Do you have an appointment?"

"I'm Mariana's mother-in-law."

"I'm afraid Mrs. Escalante isn't available."

Margaret frowned.

"Tell her Margaret Lawson is here."

The receptionist made a phone call.

A minute later she looked up.

"I'm sorry."

"Mrs. Escalante declined the meeting."

Margaret's face hardened.

"She can't refuse me."

The receptionist remained calm.

"She already has."

Margaret raised her voice.

"I demand to see her!"

Before security could move...

The elevator doors opened.

Mariana stepped into the lobby.

The room fell silent.

Margaret hurried toward her.

"Mariana..."

"My dear..."

Mariana looked at her.

The woman who had mocked her.

Humiliated her.

Called her poor.

Called her unworthy.

Now...

Margaret's smile looked painfully forced.

"We've always been family."

Mariana answered quietly.

"No."

"You were Andrew's family."

"You never allowed me to become yours."

Margaret reached for her hand.

Mariana stepped back.

"Please..."

"There must be some misunderstanding."

Mariana's eyes never left hers.

"There was."

"I misunderstood who you were."

Margaret's shoulders dropped.

"You can't treat us like strangers."

Mariana's voice remained calm.

"You treated me like one for four years."

Silence filled the lobby.

Employees pretended to work.

But every ear listened.

Margaret lowered her head.

"I'm sorry."

The words barely escaped her lips.

Mariana remembered another sentence.

"Tomorrow morning... every one of you will be on your knees asking for my forgiveness."

She had spoken in anger.

She never imagined it would come true.

Margaret whispered again.

"I'm sorry."

Mariana looked at her for a long moment.

Then answered.

"I forgive you."

Hope returned to Margaret's eyes.

"But forgiveness..."

Mariana continued.

"...doesn't restore trust."

"It doesn't erase choices."

"And it doesn't give you another place in my life."

She walked past her.

Without another glance.

Without another word.

Late that evening...

Andrew returned to the mansion.

The gates were open.

The lights were off.

Removal trucks lined the driveway.

Workers carefully carried paintings...

Furniture...

Artwork...

Even the grand piano from the ballroom.

"What are you doing?"

One supervisor handed him an inventory list.

"Removing Escalante Family Trust property."

Andrew stared at the endless pages.

Almost everything inside the mansion belonged to the Trust.

Even the dining table.

Even the chandeliers.

Even the marble statues in the garden.

By midnight...

The mansion echoed.

Empty.

Cold.

For the first time since it had been built...

It no longer looked like a palace.

It looked like a shell.

Andrew slowly walked into the living room.

The shattered coffee table had been replaced.

But one thing remained exactly where it had fallen the night Mariana left.

A tiny drop of dried blood.

He knelt beside it.

His fingers trembled.

That single stain reminded him of the slap.

The humiliation.

The woman who had looked at him one final time...

Not with hatred.

But with disappointment.

He closed his eyes.

And for the first time in years...

Andrew Lawson cried.

Not because he had lost his fortune.

Not because he had lost his company.

But because he finally understood...

The richest thing he had ever possessed...

Was the wife who had loved him before she stopped believing he deserved it.

Outside the mansion...

A black car sat quietly across the street.

Inside...

Mariana's chief of security lowered his phone after taking one final photograph.

He sent it to Mariana with a single message.

"Phase Four is complete."

Mariana looked at the image.

Andrew.

Alone.

Kneeling on the marble floor.

Exactly where he had once ordered her to kneel.

She locked her phone.

Closed her eyes.

And whispered to herself...

"Karma never shouts."

"It simply arrives."

She believed the story was finally over.

She was wrong.

Because the next morning...

A sealed envelope would arrive at Escalante Global.

Inside it...

May you like

Was a secret Andrew had hidden for four years.

A secret capable of changing everything they both believed about their marriage.
