Chapter 3 — The Truth They Could No Longer Hide

Andrew stood outside the boardroom like a ghost.

Through the glass walls, he watched the directors rise to their feet as Mariana took the chair that had once belonged to him.

No one objected.

No one questioned it.

No one even looked in his direction.

It was as if he had already ceased to exist.

His fists tightened.

"This is my company..."

He whispered the words to himself.

But for the first time...

They sounded like a lie.

Inside the boardroom, Mariana calmly opened the leather folder in front of her.

The company's General Counsel stood.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"Before today's meeting begins, there is one matter that must be placed on the record."

He pressed a button.

The projector came to life.

One document after another appeared on the massive screen.

Corporate filings.

Bank transfers.

Investment contracts.

Loan guarantees.

Every page carried Mariana Escalante's signature.

Not Andrew's.

The attorney spoke clearly.

"Four years ago, Lawson Technologies was thirty-six days away from bankruptcy."

Another document appeared.

A bank notice.

FINAL DEMAND.

Past Due: $147,000,000.

"The company had exhausted every credit line."

"No bank was willing to refinance."

"No investor agreed to participate."

The room remained silent.

Then came the next slide.

Escalante Capital Holdings.

Emergency Investment Authorization.

Amount...

$310,000,000.

Approved by...

Mariana Escalante.

The attorney continued.

"This investment saved the company."

"It also made Mrs. Escalante the controlling shareholder."

Several directors lowered their heads.

One elderly board member sighed.

"We all knew someone rescued the company..."

"We simply never knew who."

Mariana said nothing.

She simply watched the screen.

Outside...

Andrew's phone wouldn't stop ringing.

The first call came from his largest investor.

"What the hell is happening?"

"The news says you've lost control of the company."

Andrew forced a laugh.

"It's temporary."

"It'll be sorted out."

The investor interrupted him.

"I've just received certified documents."

"They aren't temporary."

"You've been replaced."

The call disconnected.

Before Andrew could react...

Another call.

Then another.

Then another.

Banks.

Partners.

Suppliers.

Board members.

Every conversation ended the same way.

No confidence.

No support.

No loyalty.

The people who had once called him a visionary...

Were already looking for someone else to follow.

At the mansion...

Margaret paced across the living room.

"This is impossible."

"There has to be some mistake."

Brenda sat on the white leather sofa, nervously refreshing the financial news on her phone.

Then...

Her face turned pale.

"What?"

Margaret demanded.

Brenda slowly turned the screen toward her.

The headline filled the display.

BREAKING NEWS

LAWSON TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES NEW CHAIRWOMAN: MARIANA ESCALANTE.

Below it...

A photograph.

Mariana.

Standing confidently in front of the company headquarters.

Behind her...

The Escalante Global logo.

Margaret frowned.

"Escalante..."

She whispered the name again.

Suddenly...

Something stirred in her memory.

Years ago...

She had attended an international charity gala.

There had been one family every billionaire wanted to meet.

The Escalantes.

Old money.

Global influence.

Political connections.

Enough wealth to quietly purchase entire corporations.

Margaret remembered one thing clearly.

No one ever crossed Eduardo Escalante.

No one.

Her hands began to shake.

"No..."

"It can't be..."

Back at headquarters...

The board meeting continued.

The Chief Financial Officer stood beside Mariana.

"There is one final matter."

He handed her another folder.

Andrew Lawson.

Executive Expense Investigation.

Mariana opened it.

Page after page.

Private jet vacations disguised as business travel.

Luxury gifts purchased with company funds.

Hidden gambling debts.

Payments to shell companies.

Transfers made to Brenda's personal accounts.

The room fell silent.

One director slammed his hand on the table.

"He stole from the company?"

The CFO answered quietly.

"No."

"He believed the company belonged to him."

"Unfortunately..."

"It didn't."

Mariana closed the folder.

"I don't want revenge."

Everyone looked at her.

"I want accountability."

She slid the file across the table.

"Send everything to the authorities."

No anger.

No shouting.

Just one sentence.

And Andrew's future changed forever.

At noon...

Andrew finally managed to enter the underground parking garage.

His former assistant rushed toward him.

"Mr. Lawson..."

He smiled with relief.

Finally.

Someone loyal.

"Claire."

"At least you still—"

She interrupted him.

"I'm only here because Mrs. Escalante asked me to give you this."

She handed him a sealed envelope.

Then walked away.

Without another word.

Andrew stared at the envelope.

His hands trembled.

Inside...

Only three documents.

A copy of their prenuptial agreement.

A divorce petition.

And one handwritten note.

His breathing stopped as he recognized Mariana's handwriting.

It read...

"You once told me I would leave with nothing."

"You were right."

"I left with everything that was already mine."

"You can keep the memories."

"I no longer want them."

Andrew read the note again.

Then again.

For the first time...

His eyes filled with tears.

Not because he had lost the company.

Not because he had lost the mansion.

But because he finally understood...

He had lost the only person who had loved him before he had anything worth loving.

That evening...

Brenda arrived at Andrew's penthouse.

Only to discover the electronic locks had been changed.

A security guard stepped outside.

"Can I help you?"

"I live here."

The guard checked his tablet.

"I'm sorry."

"Mrs. Escalante terminated your access this afternoon."

Brenda laughed nervously.

"There must be some mistake."

"There isn't."

He handed her a small cardboard box.

Inside...

Her designer handbags.

Jewelry.

Cosmetics.

Everything she had brought into Andrew's life.

Nothing more.

Nothing less.

"Mrs. Escalante asked us to remind you..."

The guard paused.

"...that everything else belongs to her."

The doors closed.

Leaving Brenda standing alone on the sidewalk with a cardboard box in her arms.

For the first time...

She realized she had gambled everything...

On a man who no longer owned anything.

And somewhere across the city...

Mariana looked out from the top floor of Escalante Global Headquarters.

She wasn't smiling.

Victory didn't feel the way people imagined.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't satisfying.

It was quiet.

Painfully quiet.

Her assistant approached.

"Mrs. Escalante."

"The police financial crimes division has accepted the evidence."

"The media is requesting an interview."

"And..."

He hesitated.

"Mr. Andrew Lawson has been asking to see you."

Mariana looked at the city lights stretching beyond the glass.

Then answered softly.

"He had four years to speak to me."

"He can wait."

Outside...

Dark clouds rolled across the skyline.

Andrew still believed losing his company was the worst thing that could happen.

He was wrong.

Tomorrow...

The criminal investigation would begin.

May you like

And the truth buried beneath years of lies...

Would destroy everything he had left.
