Chapter 2 — By Sunrise, Nothing Belonged to Him

The black SUV slipped through the empty streets without making a sound.
I never looked back.
Not once.
The mansion...
The marriage...
The woman who had stolen my husband's heart...
The family that had spent four years convincing me I was nothing...
They were already part of my past.
Inside the SUV, the only sound was the quiet vibration of my phone.
Thirty-seven missed calls.
All from Andrew.
Then another.
I declined it.
Immediately, another call appeared.
Margaret.
Declined.
Then Brenda.
Blocked.
The man sitting in the front passenger seat glanced at me through the rearview mirror.
"They've already begun panicking, Mrs. Escalante."
I simply nodded.
"Status?"
"The emergency board meeting has been assembled."
"The legal department has executed every document you authorized."
"The banks have acknowledged the ownership transfer."
"The trustees are waiting for your final approval."
I leaned back against the leather seat.
"Good."
Outside the window, the city lights blurred into streaks of gold.
For four years...
I had hidden the truth.
Not because I was weak.
Because my father believed love should never depend on money.
"If a man only stays because of your fortune," he used to tell me, "he was never yours."
So when I met Andrew...
I told him I came from an ordinary family.
I refused my father's offer to announce our engagement publicly.
I refused his fortune.
I refused his security.
I wanted a husband.
Not a businessman looking for an investment.
My father warned me.
"You'll discover who he really is."
I smiled back then.
I thought love was enough.
I had never been more wrong.
...
Corporate headquarters towered above the city like a fortress of glass and steel.
The moment the SUV stopped, nearly thirty executives were already waiting outside.
The doors opened.
Every one of them stood.
No cameras.
No applause.
Only respect.
"Good evening, Mrs. Escalante."
They bowed together.
I walked past them without slowing.
Inside the executive boardroom...
My father was standing beside the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Eduardo Escalante.
Founder of Escalante Global Holdings.
One of the wealthiest men in the country.
The man Andrew believed was merely an overseas investor.
He turned as I entered.
His eyes landed on the fading mark across my cheek.
The room became silent.
"What happened?"
I answered quietly.
"He hit me."
No one moved.
For several seconds...
My father didn't speak.
Then he slowly removed his glasses.
Placed them on the table.
His voice remained calm.
Too calm.
"Who?"
"You already know."
Another long silence.
Finally...
He looked toward the company's chief legal officer.
"Begin."
A dozen thick folders slid across the conference table.
Every document carried one name.
Andrew Lawson.
The chief attorney spoke.
"Three years ago, Mrs. Escalante personally acquired sixty-two percent of Lawson Technologies through offshore investment funds."
"None of the shares were registered under Mr. Lawson."
"They belong exclusively to Mrs. Mariana Escalante."
Another attorney continued.
"The mansion is held by Escalante Family Trust."
"The luxury vehicles are leased through Escalante Capital."
"The investment portfolios were funded entirely through Mrs. Escalante's private assets."
"The company credit lines are personally guaranteed by Escalante Global."
My father folded his hands.
"In simple terms..."
I finished the sentence.
"He owns nothing."
Every executive nodded.
...
Across town...
Andrew stormed into his home office.
His face was red with anger.
"Get me the bank!"
Brenda followed close behind.
"Baby..."
"Calm down."
"It's just another one of her childish games."
Andrew slammed his fist against the desk.
"She threatened me."
"I'll make sure she regrets it."
His private banker answered almost immediately.
"Good evening, Mr. Lawson."
"I need every account belonging to Lawson Technologies frozen under my authorization."
A pause.
"I'm sorry, sir."
Andrew frowned.
"What?"
"You are no longer an authorized controlling signatory."
His expression froze.
"What did you just say?"
"Our records show ownership authority was updated forty-three minutes ago."
"There must be some mistake."
"There isn't, sir."
"Control now belongs to Mrs. Mariana Escalante."
The call ended.
Andrew stared at the phone.
Then laughed.
A short...
Disbelieving laugh.
"This is impossible."
Margaret walked into the office.
"What happened?"
"They're making some kind of banking mistake."
Brenda forced a smile.
"It'll be fixed tomorrow."
Then Andrew's phone rang again.
This time...
His Chief Financial Officer.
"Andrew..."
His voice sounded terrified.
"We've got a serious problem."
"What now?"
"Our operating accounts have been suspended."
"The board members are demanding an emergency meeting."
"Our investors have received ownership notifications."
Andrew felt his stomach tighten.
"What notifications?"
The CFO swallowed.
"They've all been informed..."
"...that Mrs. Mariana Escalante is the controlling shareholder."
Silence.
Pure silence.
Andrew slowly looked toward Brenda.
She could no longer smile.
...
Back at headquarters...
I signed the final authorization.
The chief attorney collected the documents.
"It is done."
"No transaction exceeding ten thousand dollars can proceed without your approval."
"The board meeting begins at eight."
"The press conference has been prepared."
My father looked at me.
"You can destroy him."
I remained quiet.
He continued.
"You can also spare him."
"What do you choose?"
I looked out across the sleeping city.
"I won't destroy him."
The room looked surprised.
My father raised an eyebrow.
"I'll let the truth do it."
...
Six-thirty the next morning.
Andrew arrived at Lawson Technologies expecting another ordinary workday.
Instead...
Every employee was standing outside the building.
No one was entering.
Security guards blocked the front doors.
Andrew frowned.
"What is this?"
The head of security stepped forward.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"You no longer have building access."
Andrew laughed.
"Move."
"I'm the CEO."
The guard handed him a printed document.
"Not anymore."
Andrew stared at the first page.
BOARD RESOLUTION
Effective immediately...
Andrew Lawson is removed as Chief Executive Officer.
Replacement—
Mrs. Mariana Escalante.
His hands began to shake.
"This isn't legal."
"It is."
A familiar voice echoed behind him.
Andrew slowly turned.
A convoy of black luxury vehicles rolled to a stop in front of the headquarters.
The rear door opened.
I stepped out.
Wearing a tailored ivory business suit.
Diamond earrings.
My hair perfectly tied back.
No bruised wife.
No frightened woman.
Only the owner.
Every executive waiting outside the building straightened instantly.
Then, in perfect unison...
They bowed.
"Good morning, Chairwoman Escalante."
Andrew's face turned white.
For the first time since the night we met...
He finally realized...
May you like
The woman he had ordered to kneel...
Owned the ground beneath his feet.
