Chapter 6 – The Emergency Board Vote

At 2:00 p.m., the Executive Boardroom of Bennett Global Hospitality was completely sealed.
No phones.
No assistants.
No observers.
Only twenty-four voting directors, the company's legal team, the Chief Compliance Officer, Internal Audit, and one empty chair.
The chair once reserved for Executive Vice President Ryan Collins.
Its polished leather remained untouched.
A silent reminder that power could disappear faster than it was earned.
Outside the boardroom, reporters had flooded the streets surrounding The Monarch Grand Hotel.
Financial news networks interrupted regular programming.
Business analysts speculated about the largest executive scandal in the hospitality industry's history.
Inside...
No one cared about headlines.
Only facts.
Charlotte Bennett stood beside the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan.
She watched helicopters circle above the city.
Her reflection shimmered faintly in the glass.
Calm.
Unshaken.
Behind her, the directors quietly reviewed the forensic report for one final time.
No one spoke.
Every page seemed heavier than the last.
At exactly 2:05 p.m., Daniel Reeves rose from his seat.
"Madam Chair."
"The Board has reached the disciplinary phase."
Charlotte turned.
"Proceed."
Daniel adjusted his glasses.
"Before any vote is taken, Mr. Ryan Collins has the legal right to respond to the allegations presented against him."
He looked toward the conference room doors.
"Please bring him in."
Seconds later, the doors opened.
Ryan Collins entered wearing the same charcoal suit from the previous evening.
Only now it looked wrinkled.
His tie hung loose.
His eyes were bloodshot from exhaustion.
He had not slept.
Every executive in the room watched silently as he walked toward the empty chair.
No one greeted him.
No one smiled.
For the first time since joining Bennett Global...
Ryan felt like an outsider.
Daniel gestured toward the seat.
"You may begin."
Ryan looked around the room.
Faces he had worked beside for years now seemed carved from stone.
He finally cleared his throat.
"I know this looks bad."
A director interrupted immediately.
"Looks bad?"
Ryan hesitated.
"I made mistakes."
"I exercised poor judgment."
"But I've generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for this company."
"I've negotiated acquisitions."
"I've expanded our international partnerships."
"I've increased shareholder value."
He looked toward Charlotte.
"I deserve the opportunity to correct my mistakes."
Charlotte remained silent.
Daniel Reeves opened another folder.
"Mr. Collins."
"Do you deny authorizing fraudulent expense reports?"
Ryan lowered his eyes.
"No."
"Do you deny approving fictitious executive conferences?"
"No."
"Do you deny transferring company funds for personal use?"
Ryan swallowed.
"No."
Daniel paused.
"Do you deny knowingly concealing these transactions from Internal Audit?"
Ryan's silence lasted several seconds.
Then...
"No."
The room became even quieter.
Director Margaret Holloway leaned forward.
"I have one question."
Ryan nodded hopefully.
"If your wife had not discovered your affair..."
"Would you have ever stopped stealing?"
Ryan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Margaret nodded once.
"That answers my question."
Another director spoke.
"For six years we trusted you."
"You attended our homes."
"You celebrated holidays with our families."
"We recommended you for promotion."
His voice hardened.
"And all that time..."
"You were stealing from the people who believed in you."
Ryan looked toward Charlotte.
Finally.
Directly.
"I'm sorry."
She met his eyes.
"I know."
His expression softened.
"You know?"
Charlotte nodded gently.
"You're sorry because you were caught."
A painful silence settled across the room.
Ryan's shoulders slumped.
There was no argument left.
No excuse.
Only consequences.
Daniel stood once more.
"The Chair has requested that the Board vote immediately."
He distributed encrypted electronic voting devices.
"The motion before the Board reads as follows."
He spoke each word slowly.
"Effective immediately..."
"Ryan Collins shall be terminated for cause."
"His employment shall end immediately."
"All executive benefits shall cease."
"All stock options shall be forfeited."
"All deferred compensation shall be suspended pending legal proceedings."
"Furthermore..."
"The company shall pursue every available civil remedy to recover all misappropriated assets."
He looked around the room.
"Voting is now open."
A soft electronic tone echoed.
One by one...
Directors pressed their selections.
Ryan watched every movement.
He searched for a friendly face.
Someone.
Anyone.
There was none.
For years he had believed loyalty could be bought with influence.
Now he discovered that respect disappeared the moment integrity did.
The final vote was recorded.
Daniel received the results.
He looked toward Charlotte.
"Madam Chair."
She nodded.
"Read them."
Daniel inhaled.
"Twenty-four votes cast."
He paused.
"Twenty-four votes in favor."
"No votes opposed."
"No abstentions."
The decision was unanimous.
Ryan closed his eyes.
His career had ended in less than ten seconds.
Charlotte slowly stood.
She walked toward him.
Every director watched in silence.
Ryan expected anger.
Perhaps satisfaction.
Instead, Charlotte's voice remained remarkably gentle.
"When we married..."
She said quietly.
"You told me success wasn't measured by money."
Ryan lowered his head.
"I remember."
"You said it was measured by character."
A bitter smile crossed his face.
"I remember that too."
Charlotte nodded.
"You were right."
She placed a sealed envelope on the table before him.
"What is this?"
"Your official termination."
Ryan looked at the envelope but didn't touch it.
Charlotte continued.
"I could forgive failure."
"I could forgive bad decisions."
"I might even have forgiven betrayal."
Her voice never rose.
"But there is one thing I cannot forgive."
Ryan looked up.
"You stood beside another woman..."
"...while she tried to strip your wife of her dignity."
The words landed harder than any accusation.
Charlotte gently pushed the envelope toward him.
"You didn't lose your position today."
"You lost it yesterday."
"The Board merely made it official."
Ryan finally picked up the envelope.
His hands trembled.
For the first time since entering the company...
He understood that every promotion...
Every title...
Every achievement...
Had been temporary.
Only character lasted.
And his had failed.
As security officers approached, Ryan rose slowly from his chair.
No one applauded.
No one celebrated.
The room remained solemn.
Because the fall of a man was never something Charlotte wanted to witness.
She simply refused to look away when justice demanded it.
Ryan reached the conference room door.
His hand rested on the handle.
Then he turned back one final time.
His eyes found Charlotte.
"Is there any way..."
"...to fix this?"
Charlotte looked at him for a long moment.
Then she answered with heartbreaking honesty.
"You can repay the money."
"You can face the courts."
"You can even rebuild your life."
She paused.
"But trust..."
She glanced briefly at the wedding ring she no longer wore.
"...is the only debt that can never be repaid."
The doors closed behind him.
Silence filled the boardroom once more.
Daniel Reeves broke it with a quiet announcement.
"Madam Chair."
"The Securities and Exchange Commission has arrived."
"And so has the FBI."
Charlotte nodded once.
"Show them in."
The civil investigation was over.
May you like
Now...
The criminal investigation was about to begin.
