Chapter 10 – Sabrina Alone

Three weeks later...
Sabrina Monroe no longer recognized the woman staring back at her.
The luxurious penthouse apartment overlooking the Hudson River was almost empty.
The grand piano had been repossessed.
The Italian marble dining table had been removed.
The artwork decorating the walls had disappeared one piece at a time.
Federal investigators had determined that nearly everything inside the apartment had been purchased with misappropriated corporate funds.
Every receipt had become evidence.
Every luxury item had become government property.
The silence was unbearable.
Only weeks earlier, the apartment had been filled with laughter, champagne, and powerful people eager to stand beside her.
Now...
Even the echo sounded lonely.
Her phone rang.
Sabrina answered before looking at the screen.
"Ryan?"
A woman's voice replied.
"I'm calling on behalf of Madison Elite Management."
Her former modeling agency.
Sabrina forced a smile.
"I knew you'd call."
"I've prepared a statement."
"We can repair this."
There was a long pause.
"I'm afraid there won't be a statement."
"What do you mean?"
"The Board voted unanimously."
"Your contract has been permanently terminated."
Sabrina's smile faded.
"I've represented your agency for four years."
"We appreciate your past work."
"But every brand associated with you has withdrawn."
"Our insurance providers have advised us that continuing the relationship represents an unacceptable reputational risk."
The words sounded rehearsed.
Cold.
Professional.
Final.
Before Sabrina could respond...
The call ended.
She stared at the silent phone.
Four years...
Gone in less than thirty seconds.
By afternoon, another envelope arrived.
Then another.
The luxury car leasing company demanded immediate return of her vehicle.
The fashion house revoked her ambassador status.
A cosmetics company terminated a seven-figure endorsement contract.
Even the exclusive fitness club where celebrities waited months for membership sent a brief email.
Your membership has been canceled effective immediately.
No explanation.
None was necessary.
She opened Instagram.
Once, every photograph had attracted admiration.
Now every comment section was filled with disappointment.
People no longer discussed her beauty.
They discussed her choices.
She opened one recent post.
It showed her smiling beside Ryan on a yacht in Monaco.
Thousands of comments filled the screen.
"That yacht belonged to stolen money."
"Charlotte deserved better."
"Real elegance doesn't humiliate people."
"Delete this."
Sabrina closed the application.
Then deleted it entirely.
The silence afterward felt even worse.
That evening, there was another knock at the door.
Hope returned instantly.
Ryan.
It had to be Ryan.
She hurried across the apartment and opened the door.
He stood there wearing a dark coat.
His shoulders were slumped.
His face looked years older than it had only a month before.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Sabrina smiled weakly.
"I knew you'd come."
Ryan didn't smile back.
"Can I come in?"
She stepped aside.
The apartment looked unfamiliar even to him.
Half-empty.
Cold.
Boxes stacked against the walls.
They sat facing each other across a bare wooden table.
No champagne.
No music.
No expensive candles.
Only silence.
Sabrina reached for his hand.
"We'll get through this."
Ryan gently pulled his hand away.
She frowned.
"What is it?"
He looked around the apartment.
"I've been thinking."
She smiled again.
"So have I."
"We'll move somewhere else."
"Start over."
"People will forget."
Ryan slowly shook his head.
"They won't."
"They always do."
"No."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I won't."
The room became still.
Sabrina's heartbeat quickened.
"What are you saying?"
Ryan inhaled deeply.
"I came here to say goodbye."
Her face drained of color.
"No..."
"You can't."
"I already have."
She stared at him in disbelief.
"You left your wife for me."
Ryan closed his eyes briefly.
"I left my wife long before I admitted it."
"And now you're leaving me?"
His answer came quietly.
"I never really chose you."
The words hit harder than a slap.
"What?"
Ryan rubbed his tired face.
"I chose my ego."
"I chose admiration."
"I chose the version of myself I wanted the world to see."
He looked around the empty apartment.
"And you were part of that illusion."
Sabrina stood abruptly.
"So this is my fault?"
"I didn't say that."
"You let me believe you loved me!"
Ryan's voice remained calm.
"I thought I did."
"You bought me gifts."
"With stolen money."
"You promised we'd build a future."
Ryan lowered his eyes.
"I was lying to both of us."
Tears filled Sabrina's eyes.
"So after everything..."
"You're just walking away?"
Ryan reached into his coat pocket.
He placed a single envelope on the table.
Inside was a cashier's check.
It represented nearly everything left in his personal savings after the frozen accounts and legal fees.
"It's all I can give you."
She looked at the check.
Then laughed bitterly.
"You think this fixes anything?"
"No."
"It fixes nothing."
He stood.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
"I don't deserve it."
He walked toward the door.
Sabrina's voice trembled.
"Ryan..."
He stopped but didn't turn around.
"Did you ever love me?"
A long silence followed.
Finally...
He answered with heartbreaking honesty.
"I loved the escape you represented."
He opened the door.
"But I never loved you the way I should have."
The door closed softly behind him.
Sabrina remained frozen.
For several minutes she simply stared at the empty doorway.
Then her knees gave way.
She sank onto the hardwood floor.
Not because she had lost her wealth.
Not because she had lost her career.
Not even because she had become the most hated woman in America.
She cried because, for the first time in years...
There was no one left pretending she was worth staying for.
Across the city, Ryan walked alone through Central Park as the first snow of winter began to fall.
He pulled his coat tighter against the cold.
His phone vibrated.
A message from his attorney.
Federal prosecutors have finalized the criminal charges. They are requesting your presence tomorrow morning.
Ryan read the message twice.
Then slipped the phone back into his pocket.
Tomorrow...
He would no longer be fighting to save his reputation.
He would be fighting for his freedom.
And somewhere in another part of Manhattan...
Charlotte Bennett was preparing for the next battle.
May you like
Not against Ryan.
But against the mysterious partner who had quietly stolen twenty million dollars from her company while everyone had been watching someone else.
