Chapter 2 – The Morning the Penthouse Door Opened

At 6:42 a.m., the first rays of sunlight spilled across the Manhattan skyline, turning the glass towers into pillars of gold.

Inside the Penthouse Royal Suite, silence lingered after a night of expensive champagne, designer perfumes, and careless promises.

Ryan Collins slept soundly.

Beside him, Sabrina Monroe lay wrapped in silk sheets, smiling faintly as if the world already belonged to them.

Then—

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Three sharp knocks echoed through the suite.

Ryan groaned.

"Room service?"

No answer.

Another knock.

Harder this time.

Then a calm voice came through the door.

"Mr. Ryan Collins."

"This is Bennett Global Hospitality Legal Department."

"We require your immediate attention."

Ryan frowned.

"What the hell?"

Sabrina buried her face into the pillow.

"Tell them to go away."

Ryan threw on a hotel robe and walked toward the entrance.

As soon as he opened the door, the smile vanished from his face.

Standing outside were eight people.

Two corporate attorneys.

Three members of Internal Audit.

Two hotel security directors.

And Ethan.

The front office manager.

Everyone wore dark business attire.

No one looked pleased to be there.

No one spoke first.

Ryan forced a laugh.

"What is this?"

"A surprise inspection?"

The senior attorney stepped forward.

"Mr. Collins."

"My name is Daniel Reeves, General Counsel for Bennett Global Hospitality Group."

"I've been instructed to serve you with formal notice."

He handed Ryan a thick envelope.

Ryan barely glanced at it.

"What's this supposed to be?"

"A suspension notice."

"Effective immediately."

His smile disappeared.

"I'm sorry?"

"You have been placed on administrative leave pending investigation into allegations of corporate fraud, embezzlement, breach of fiduciary duty, and misuse of company assets."

Ryan stared.

Then laughed.

A loud, confident laugh.

"You people are joking."

"I'm Executive Vice President."

"I authorized every expense."

The lead auditor quietly opened a tablet.

"You no longer possess authorization."

Ryan's expression hardened.

"You don't have the authority to suspend me."

Daniel Reeves answered calmly.

"The Board does."

"And the Chairwoman approved the order at 3:14 this morning."

Ryan frowned.

"The Chairwoman?"

He searched his memory.

The Chair of Bennett Global almost never appeared in public.

Very few executives had ever met her.

"Who made this decision?"

Daniel simply replied,

"The Chair."

Nothing more.

Behind Ryan, Sabrina walked into the living room wearing one of his white dress shirts.

She smiled confidently.

"Oh, Ryan."

"Just tell them who you are."

"They'll leave."

Nobody looked at her.

Instead, one of the auditors placed a black folder on the marble dining table.

Inside were photographs.

Receipts.

Invoices.

Luxury purchases.

International flight records.

Ryan's heartbeat quickened.

"Where did you get these?"

"We obtained them through the forensic audit."

Another investigator placed a second folder beside the first.

"And this contains your corporate credit card history."

Ryan reached for his phone.

"I'll call Finance."

"No need."

The auditor spoke before he could dial.

"Your phone has already been disconnected from the executive network."

Ryan looked down.

No signal.

No company email.

No secure applications.

Everything had vanished.

He quickly pulled his wallet from the kitchen counter.

Three corporate credit cards.

Black.

Platinum.

Titanium.

He picked up the first.

The senior security director handed him a portable payment terminal.

"Please."

Ryan smirked.

"Watch."

He inserted the card.

DECLINED

His smile faded.

He tried another.

CARD BLOCKED

The third.

ACCOUNT SUSPENDED

Ryan stared at the screen.

"No..."

"There has to be some mistake."

"There isn't."

Daniel Reeves' voice remained calm.

"At 4:02 a.m., every corporate account under your authorization was frozen."

"All spending privileges have been revoked."

"Company vehicles have been reassigned."

"Your executive access has been terminated."

"Your office has been sealed."

"And your email archive is now under legal preservation."

Ryan suddenly felt the room growing smaller.

Impossible.

This couldn't happen overnight.

Unless...

The Board had already planned everything.

Sabrina frowned.

"Fine."

"So use your personal card."

Ryan nodded quickly.

"Right."

He reached into another pocket.

His American Express Centurion card.

The one he always carried.

He handed it confidently to the security director.

The payment terminal beeped.

TRANSACTION DECLINED

Ryan blinked.

"What?"

He tried Visa.

Declined.

Mastercard.

Declined.

Another bank.

Declined.

Sabrina's smile disappeared.

"Ryan..."

"What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything."

He grabbed his phone again and opened his banking app.

The screen loaded.

Then displayed a single message.

ACCOUNT TEMPORARILY FROZEN PENDING FRAUD INVESTIGATION

His breathing became uneven.

"No..."

"No..."

"This isn't possible."

Sabrina rushed toward her handbag.

"I'll pay."

She confidently pulled out her own luxury credit card.

"I have plenty of—"

She stopped mid-sentence.

Her card wasn't there.

Neither was her passport.

Nor the diamond necklace Ryan had bought her in Paris.

The jewelry box was empty.

Her suitcase had been opened.

Everything purchased with company money had disappeared.

She looked around wildly.

"Where are my things?"

One of the investigators calmly answered.

"They have been secured as potential corporate assets."

Her face turned white.

"My jewelry?"

"Evidence."

"My handbags?"

"Evidence."

"My watch?"

"Evidence."

"My clothes?"

"If purchased with misappropriated corporate funds..."

The investigator closed his notebook.

"They are no longer legally yours."

For the first time since entering the hotel...

Panic spread across Sabrina's face.

She grabbed Ryan's arm.

"Tell them!"

"Tell them you own this hotel!"

Ryan opened his mouth.

Before he could speak...

A familiar voice echoed from the hallway.

Deep.

Calm.

Unmistakably confident.

"I'm afraid..."

"...he doesn't own anything here."

Every head turned toward the open doorway.

Elegant footsteps approached across the marble floor.

Charlotte Bennett appeared.

She wore a tailored navy suit, her posture flawless, her expression unreadable.

Behind her walked six board members.

Two senior attorneys.

The Chief Financial Officer.

And the Chairman of Internal Audit.

The entire hallway fell silent.

Ethan lowered his head.

"So did every employee on the floor."

Charlotte stopped just inside the suite.

Her eyes rested briefly on Ryan.

Then on Sabrina.

Finally, she spoke.

"Good morning."

"I hope you both enjoyed your last night..."

"...on my property."

Ryan's face lost every trace of color.
