CHAP 7 — THE TWO-YEAR PLAN

The calendar archive changed the case.
Not because secret meetings automatically proved conspiracy.
Because the dates exposed Adrian’s lies.
Twenty-two months earlier, Stephen Price began appearing on Adrian’s private calendar under coded entries.
S.P. Strategy.
V.H. Review.
Asset Contingency.
Four months later, Adrian encouraged me to sign the “insurance documents” in Paris.
Months after that, Vanessa formally joined Vale Meridian.
The divorce papers had not been written after she became pregnant.
They had evolved over nearly two years.
I sat with Evelyn and stared at the timeline.
“He planned to leave me before the affair became public.”
“Yes.”
“Then why wait?”
Dad answered from across the table.
“Vale Meridian still needed your support.”
That hurt because it was probably true.
Adrian wanted out of the marriage.
He did not want out of the money connected to it.
Vanessa had simply offered him a way to believe he could keep both.
Mara’s archive contained one even more disturbing entry.
A meeting between Adrian and a private investigator.
I recognized the firm.
“They investigated me?”
Evelyn nodded.
“When?”
“Before Paris.”
“What did they find?”
“We don’t know.”
Adrian might have discovered my father earlier than we thought.
But if he had, why ask “Who is your father?” that night?
We subpoenaed the investigator’s records through the divorce litigation.
The answer arrived three days later.
The investigator had not identified Nathaniel Sinclair.
He had discovered that my mother, Isabelle Rowan, was connected to several trusts with unusually large assets.
Adrian learned I was wealthy.
He simply did not know how wealthy.
Or whose daughter I was.
That was enough.
He began planning.
My quiet-wife fantasy had been dead long before I knew it.
Yet the discovery gave me something unexpected.
Freedom.
There was no relationship left to save.
No misunderstanding to correct.
No explanation from Adrian that could transform deliberate planning into a moment of madness.
So I stopped grieving the marriage I thought I had.
I started investigating the business I had helped protect.
Vale Meridian’s independent board formed a special committee.
I accepted a nonvoting observer seat because of my trust’s economic exposure.
Adrian fought it.
Lost.
Miles resigned as CFO.
The board hired forensic accountants.
They discovered forty-one transfers through VMI Strategic Advisory.
Some legitimate.
Most questionable.
Twelve traced to properties.
Four to private aircraft leases.
Three to accounts connected to Vanessa.
And one—
to me.
I stared at the statement.
$4.2 million.
Transferred to Rowan Family Services.
My name appeared in the authorization notes.
“I never received this.”
Evelyn agreed.
“Rowan Family Services doesn’t exist.”
“Then why use my name?”
Dad answered.
“To make it look like you benefited too.”
Adrian had prepared insurance.
If the transfers were discovered, he could claim I knew.
Maybe even participated.
My husband had not merely planned to divorce me.
He had built a trail that could pull me down with him.
That evening, Vanessa contacted me.
Directly.
We met through attorneys in a conference room.
She arrived in a black dress instead of the soft colors she wore for cameras.
No Adrian.
No smile.
“You look better,” she said.
I stared at her.
“Compared to when you watched him beat me?”
Her face tightened.
“I didn’t know he would do that.”
“You enjoyed it.”
Silence.
“That’s different.”
“Not enough.”
Vanessa sat.
“I want a deal.”
I almost laughed.
“You’re not negotiating with prosecutors.”
“I’m negotiating with you.”
“For what?”
“Protection.”
“From Adrian?”
Her eyes shifted.
That answered.
“What happened?”
“He thinks I leaked the account information.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Did Miles?”
“I don’t know.”
I watched her.
“Who is the baby’s father?”
Her expression changed.
“That’s none of your business.”
“You made it my business when you used the pregnancy to remove me from my marriage.”
She looked away.
I leaned forward.
“Does Adrian know there’s a possibility the child is Miles’s?”
“No.”
“Does Miles?”
“Yes.”
“You told him it was his.”
“I told him it might be.”
“He says otherwise.”
Her face hardened.
“Miles says whatever saves Miles.”
Fair.
“What do you want from me?”
Vanessa reached into her handbag.
A recorder.
“I have Adrian on this.”
“Doing what?”
Her answer was quiet.
“Explaining what would happen if you refused to sign the divorce papers.”
I felt the room become colder.
“What would happen?”
Vanessa met my eyes.
“He said he’d make sure everyone believed you were unstable.”
I said nothing.
“He said your father would eventually pay whatever Adrian demanded to make the scandal disappear.”
My fingers tightened.
Vanessa continued.
“And then he said something else.”
“What?”
“He said if humiliation wasn’t enough…”
She stopped.
“Say it.”
May you like
Vanessa swallowed.
“He would teach you obedience.”
