CHAP 3 — THE BABY AND THE CFO

Miles Carter had been Adrian’s best friend since college.
He was also the only man Adrian trusted with Vale Meridian’s money.
I had spent Christmases with him.
Birthdays.
Corporate retreats.
He had toasted our marriage.
And six weeks before Vanessa announced she was carrying Adrian’s child, someone had photographed her leaving a fertility clinic beside him.
The picture proved nothing by itself.
That was exactly why I did not send it to Adrian.
The old version of me would have.
The woman who believed every truth had to be immediately shared with her husband.
That woman had spent enough time on the marble floor.
Instead, I sent the photograph to Evelyn.
“Verify it.”
She called twenty minutes later.
“The clinic is real.”
“Anything else?”
“Miles’s wife filed for divorce four months ago.”
I sat up.
“Why?”
“Sealed filing.”
“Can we access it?”
“Not legally unless it becomes public.”
“Then don’t.”
Evelyn sounded almost pleased.
“You’re learning.”
“Apparently pain is educational.”
She went quiet.
“Claire.”
“I’m fine.”
“No, you’re functional.”
There was a difference.
That evening, Vanessa appeared on television.
I had expected Adrian.
Instead, his mistress stood outside a hotel in oversized sunglasses and a cream coat, surrounded by cameras.
She looked fragile.
Victimized.
Nothing like the woman who had smiled while I was on the floor.
“I don’t want to discuss private matters,” she told reporters, while discussing private matters. “But there has been tremendous misinformation.”
A reporter shouted, “Are you pregnant with Adrian Vale’s child?”
Vanessa touched her stomach.
“Yes.”
“Did Claire Vale attack you?”
I almost dropped the remote.
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I’m not ready to speak about everything that happened.”
It was brilliant.
She never said yes.
She let the silence say it.
Ten minutes later, social media exploded.
Photos appeared from our dinner earlier that evening.
Vanessa holding her wrist.
Me glaring at her across the table.
A cropped image made it look as if I were lunging toward her.
The full photograph would have shown me reaching for the wineglass she had knocked toward my lap.
But full photographs were less useful than cropped ones.
Adrian called a press conference the next morning.
I watched from my father’s office.
He wore a navy suit.
Perfect tie.
Controlled expression.
The Adrian everyone trusted was back.
“I deeply regret that a private family dispute has become a public spectacle.”
No mention of what he had done.
“I love my wife.”
I laughed aloud.
Dad looked over from his desk.
Adrian continued.
“But Claire has been under enormous emotional strain for some time.”
There it was.
He was going to make me unstable.
He spoke about my “difficulty adjusting to fertility struggles.”
My “increasing jealousy.”
My “fear of abandonment.”
Then:
“Last night, an argument escalated in ways I deeply regret.”
Not I assaulted her.
An argument escalated.
“Vanessa and I have developed feelings for each other, and we are expecting a child. I recognize that this has caused Claire tremendous pain.”
I turned off the television.
Dad said nothing.
I picked up the remote and turned it back on.
“No.”
“What?”
“I need to hear all of it.”
Adrian finished by implying my father had used his financial power to retaliate against Vale Meridian after our marital dispute.
That was smart.
Very smart.
Suddenly the story was not abusive husband versus wife.
It was billionaire weaponizes capital against daughter’s husband.
Investors hated uncertainty.
They hated family vendettas more.
Vale Meridian shares in a private secondary market dropped immediately.
Dad looked at me.
“What do you want to do?”
“Nothing.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“For how long?”
“Until he finishes lying.”
That afternoon, Evelyn delivered the mansion security footage to law enforcement.
The recording had no audio in portions of the entrance hall.
But it showed enough.
Adrian striking.
Me collapsing.
Vanessa watching.
The next morning, Adrian’s attorneys received notice that footage existed.
His press conference disappeared from his website within an hour.
But he did not surrender.
He changed strategy.
At noon, his attorneys filed for a protective order accusing my father of tortious interference with Vale Meridian’s lending relationships.
At 2:00 p.m., Adrian sued me.
Fraud.
Misrepresentation.
Concealment of material financial identity during marriage.
He claimed I had secretly manipulated his business through my father.
Vanessa posted one sentence online:
Truth always comes out.
I stared at it.
Then my phone rang.
Miles Carter.
The CFO.
I answered.
“Claire.”
He sounded terrified.
“We need to meet.”
“Why?”
“Not on the phone.”
“Give me one reason.”
A long pause.
May you like
Then:
“Because Vanessa’s pregnancy isn’t what Adrian thinks it is.”
