CHAP 4 — THE MAN WHO MOVED THE MONEY

I met Miles in a hotel restaurant filled with enough people to make both of us uncomfortable.
Evelyn sat three tables away.
Miles noticed.
“You brought a lawyer?”
“I brought common sense.”
He looked terrible.
Wrinkled shirt.
Unshaven.
Eyes that kept checking the entrance.
“Did you contact my father?”
“No.”
“Did you leak the photograph?”
“No.”
“Then start talking.”
Miles rubbed both hands over his face.
“Vanessa and I were seeing each other.”
I had expected it.
Hearing it still felt absurd.
“How long?”
“Seven months.”
“While she was sleeping with Adrian?”
His silence answered.
“Does Adrian know?”
“No.”
“Is the child yours?”
“I don’t know.”
That was not the dramatic confession I expected.
“You don’t know?”
“She told me it was.”
“When?”
“Before she told Adrian.”
I leaned back.
“Then why tell Adrian it was his?”
“Because she changed her mind.”
“About biology?”
Miles looked ashamed.
“She said Adrian was going to leave you. She said being pregnant would force him to move faster.”
I stared.
“And you accepted that?”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
“I threatened to tell him.”
“And?”
“She threatened me.”
“With what?”
Miles looked toward Evelyn.
Then lowered his voice.
“The accounts.”
Everything inside me sharpened.
“What accounts?”
He swallowed.
“VMI Strategic Advisory.”
There it was.
The shell company.
“What is it?”
“A consulting entity.”
“For what?”
“Nothing.”
“How much money?”
“About sixty-three million.”
The number was almost exactly the gap in Vale Meridian’s reported reserves.
“Where did it go?”
“Not all of it is gone.”
“Where?”
“Offshore structures. Real estate vehicles. Private accounts.”
“Whose?”
His silence lasted too long.
“Adrian’s?”
Miles looked down.
“Yes.”
I felt something colder than heartbreak.
Financial fraud could destroy the company.
Destroy jobs.
Destroy pensions.
Destroy people who had nothing to do with our marriage.
“Why would Vanessa know?”
“She helped set up two of the entities.”
I stared at him.
“What does Vanessa actually do?”
“You thought she was a brand consultant.”
“That’s what Adrian said.”
“She was introduced through Blackthorn Advisory.”
I knew the name.
A boutique corporate consultancy.
“What was her role?”
Miles gave a humorless laugh.
“Fixer.”
“For whom?”
“Whoever paid her.”
My stomach turned.
“Did Adrian hire her?”
“At first.”
That stopped me.
“At first?”
“She was brought in eleven months ago to identify internal leaks and help restructure executive compensation.”
“Adrian hired the woman he later claimed he accidentally fell in love with?”
“Yes.”
“And you slept with her.”
“Yes.”
“You’re all astonishingly stupid.”
Miles actually nodded.
“Fair.”
I leaned closer.
“What does Vanessa have on you?”
“Authorization records.”
“For the transfers?”
“Yes.”
“You signed them.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Adrian told me the money was being moved into acquisition reserves.”
“You didn’t verify?”
“I trusted him.”
I almost laughed.
Trust.
The most expensive word in the story.
Miles continued.
“By the time I realized the accounts were personal, my signature was on everything.”
“And Vanessa knew.”
“Yes.”
“So she owned you.”
“Yes.”
“What about the pregnancy?”
Miles looked sick.
“She has messages from me saying I believed the baby was mine.”
“Which would destroy your friendship with Adrian.”
“That’s the least of it.”
“What else?”
He slid his phone across the table.
A message from Vanessa:
If Adrian finds out about us, you lose your wife, your job, and your freedom. Keep transferring what I tell you.
I read it twice.
“You have all these messages?”
“Some.”
“Why not go to the board?”
“Because Adrian knows what I did.”
“What did you do?”
His eyes filled with shame.
“I altered two quarterly reports.”
There it was.
Miles was not a whistleblower.
Not a victim.
He was involved.
Maybe coerced later.
But involved.
“Why are you telling me now?”
“Because Adrian is trying to move the remaining money tonight.”
I stood.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why are we sitting here?”
Miles reached for my arm.
I pulled away.
“Don’t.”
He let go.
“If he learns I told you—”
I looked at him.
“You came here because you want me to save you.”
Miles did not answer.
“I won’t.”
His face fell.
“But I might save the company.”
I walked toward Evelyn.
Behind me, Miles said:
“Claire.”
I stopped.
“Vanessa didn’t choose Adrian because she loved him.”
I looked back.
“Then why?”
“Because she learned who you were.”
Everything inside me went still.
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
Months before Adrian claimed their affair began.
May you like
Miles whispered:
“She knew Nathaniel Sinclair was your father before Adrian did.”
