CHAPTER 9 – THE SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY DIANE

The message from Ryan stayed on my phone for hours.

“Ask your mother.”

Three words.

Three words designed to create doubt.

Because that was Ryan’s greatest talent.

He didn’t need to prove someone was guilty.

He only needed to make people question.

Question their memories.

Question their judgment.

Question the people standing beside them.

And for a moment…

It worked.

I looked at Diane differently.

Not because I believed Ryan.

But because I realized there was still a part of the story I didn’t know.

And secrets had already cost me too much.

The next morning, Diane knew she couldn’t hide anymore.

She made coffee.

Sat across from me.

And placed her hands flat on the table.

“I’m going to tell you everything.”

I looked at her.

“No more pieces.”

She nodded.

“No more pieces.”

For the first time, Diane looked less like a powerful woman who had protected her family for decades.

She looked like someone exhausted from carrying a weight too heavy for too long.

“I lied to the police.”

My heart tightened.

“About what?”

“The night Michael died.”

The room became silent.

“What did you lie about?”

Diane took a deep breath.

“I said I wasn’t home.”

I stared at her.

“But you were.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Ryan begged me.”

I felt cold.

“Begged you to lie?”

She nodded.

Diane explained what happened after Michael fell.

Ryan was seventeen.

Terrified.

Confused.

But not innocent.

“He knew his father was dangerous.”

Diane looked down.

“But he also knew what would happen if the truth came out.”

“What truth?”

“That he had access to the company accounts.”

I listened.

“Michael had been teaching him everything.”

The fraud.

The hidden money.

The manipulation.

Ryan knew more than anyone realized.

“And after Michael died…”

Diane continued.

“Ryan destroyed evidence.”

My stomach tightened.

“What evidence?”

“Financial records.”

“Emails.”

“Documents.”

Everything that connected Michael to the crimes.

“And you helped him?”

Diane closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

Not because I didn’t expect it.

Because I did.

But hearing her say it made it real.

“Why would you do that?”

My voice shook.

“You knew it was wrong.”

“Yes.”

“You knew people were hurt.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Ryan was learning that he could escape consequences.”

Diane nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

She looked at me.

“Because I was afraid of losing my son.”

I stared at her.

“And what about everyone else?”

Diane had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

Later that day, Detective Morgan arrived.

He had been reviewing the old case.

And he had discovered something important.

“Ryan’s father’s death wasn’t the only thing hidden.”

He placed a document on the table.

“What is that?”

“A transfer agreement.”

I looked at the paper.

The name at the top made me freeze.

Ryan.

“He received ownership rights?”

Morgan nodded.

“After Michael’s death.”

I looked at Diane.

“He inherited the company?”

“Not immediately.”

Morgan explained.

“Because Ryan was seventeen, a trust was created.”

“And who controlled the trust?”

Nobody answered.

But I already knew.

“Diane.”

She looked away.

“Yes.”

Everything connected.

The protection.

The silence.

The excuses.

Diane had not just been protecting Ryan emotionally.

She had been protecting his future.

That night, I received another call.

This time from Rachel.

Ryan’s first fiancée.

I answered immediately.

“Emily.”

Her voice sounded urgent.

“You found out about Michael, didn’t you?”

I froze.

“How do you know?”

“Because Ryan called me.”

My stomach tightened.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“What did he say?”

Rachel was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“He asked me if I still hated him.”

I frowned.

“That’s strange.”

“No.”

Her voice became serious.

“It means he knows he’s losing.”

I sat down.

“What did you tell him?”

“I told him the truth.”

“What truth?”

Rachel took a breath.

“That he was never like his father.”

A pause.

“He was worse.”

I stayed silent.

Rachel continued.

“Michael hurt people because he believed power mattered.”

“Ryan hurts people because he enjoys proving he can control them.”

Her words were painful.

But they matched everything I had seen.

“He used to apologize after he scared me.”

Rachel said.

“Not because he was sorry.”

“Because he wanted me to forgive him.”

I closed my eyes.

Ryan did that.

He always made me focus on the apology instead of the damage.

The next day, Laura called.

Her voice sounded different.

Serious.

“Emily, I need you to come to my office.”

“What happened?”

“We found something in Ryan’s custody filing.”

I arrived thirty minutes later.

Laura placed a document in front of me.

A psychological report.

My name was written at the top.

I read the first line.

Patient demonstrates unstable emotional behavior following pregnancy-related stress.

I looked up.

“This is fake.”

Laura nodded.

“We believe so.”

“Who wrote it?”

She hesitated.

“Ryan’s attorney submitted it.”

I looked at the signature.

Then I froze.

Because I recognized the name.

The doctor who signed it.

Was the same doctor Ryan insisted I see during my pregnancy.

The doctor he recommended.

The doctor who always asked me if I felt overwhelmed.

The doctor who always seemed to agree with Ryan.

“He was building this from the beginning.”

Laura nodded.

“Yes.”

The realization was terrifying.

The pregnancy.

The custody plan.

The recordings.

The doctor.

The affair.

Everything connected.

Ryan had not reacted to problems.

He had created them.

That evening, I returned home.

Diane was sitting on the couch.

She looked exhausted.

“I know what you’re going to ask.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Why I stayed silent after Michael.”

I didn’t answer.

She continued.

“Because I thought if I controlled Ryan…”

She looked at me.

“I could prevent him from becoming his father.”

A tear fell.

“But I was wrong.”

I sat across from her.

“What happened to Michael’s company?”

Diane looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I think Ryan didn’t just inherit his father’s money.”

I paused.

“I think he inherited his unfinished plans.”

Diane’s face changed.

Because she understood.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Morgan.

I answered.

“Emily.”

His voice was urgent.

“We found something in Ryan’s private storage.”

My heart started racing.

“What?”

A pause.

Then:

“Videos.”

“What kind of videos?”

Morgan’s voice became quieter.

“Videos of women.”

I felt sick.

“How many?”

Another pause.

“Twenty-three.”

The room went silent.

Diane covered her mouth.

Morgan continued:

“And Emily…”

“Yes?”

“One of the videos was recorded before you ever met Ryan.”

I gripped the phone.

“Who was in it?”

Morgan answered:

“Your husband.”

A pause.

“And another woman.”

I closed my eyes.

“Who?”

Morgan said the name.

And my entire body went cold.

Because it was someone I knew.

May you like

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been in my life the entire time.
