CHAPTER 10 – THE PERSON RYAN USED TO CONTROL EVERYTHING

The name Detective Morgan said over the phone kept echoing in my mind.
A name I knew.
A name that should not have been connected to Ryan.
A name that made every piece of my life feel like it had been carefully arranged by someone else.
“Who is it?”
My voice barely came out.
Detective Morgan paused.
Then he answered.
“Laura Bennett.”
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
My attorney.
The woman who had stood beside me.
The woman who promised to fight for me.
The woman who told me she believed me.
“No.”
The word escaped before I could stop it.
“That’s impossible.”
Morgan remained silent.
And that silence frightened me more than his words.
Because he wasn’t guessing.
He had evidence.
“Emily, we need you to come in.”
I looked at Diane.
She had heard the name.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“You know her?”
I asked.
Diane didn’t answer.
That was the worst possible answer.
The next hour felt unreal.
I sat in Detective Morgan’s office staring at photographs spread across the table.
Documents.
Messages.
Records.
Proof.
Every time I looked at something new, another part of my reality collapsed.
The first photograph showed Ryan.
Years earlier.
Standing outside a law office.
Beside him was Laura.
They were younger.
Smiling.
The second photograph showed something worse.
Ryan and Laura together at a private event.
Not as strangers.
Not as professional contacts.
As something more.
I looked away.
My stomach turned.
“How long?”
Morgan looked at the file.
“We don’t know everything yet.”
“But they knew each other.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
He opened another document.
“Laura worked for Michael Carter’s company before becoming an attorney.”
I froze.
“Ryan’s father?”
Morgan nodded.
“She was part of the legal team handling the company’s financial problems.”
Everything became clear.
The connection.
The access.
The timing.
Laura had not appeared in my life by accident.
When I returned to Diane’s house, I didn’t speak.
I couldn’t.
Too many thoughts were fighting inside my head.
Diane watched me carefully.
Finally she said:
“You know now.”
I looked at her.
“You knew.”
She nodded slowly.
“I suspected.”
“SUSPECTED?”
My voice rose.
“You knew Ryan had connections to her.”
“Yes.”
“You knew she worked with his father.”
“Yes.”
“And you still let her represent me?”
Diane looked devastated.
“I didn’t know she was involved with Ryan now.”
“But you knew there was a history.”
“Yes.”
I stood up.
“Everyone knew something except me.”
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Ryan.
Diane.
Laura.
Everyone had pieces of the story.
I had only the consequences.
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
I sat in the nursery.
The room we created before everything fell apart.
Tiny clothes.
A small crib.
A rocking chair.
A place that should have been filled with happiness.
Instead, it was where I finally understood something.
Ryan never saw me as his wife.
Not completely.
He saw me as part of a plan.
A role.
A piece on a board.
And I hated that I had ignored the signs.
The late nights.
The secret phone.
The sudden interest in finances.
The questions about my family’s assets.
The way he always asked:
“What happens if something happens to you?”
At the time, I thought he was worried.
Now I knew.
He was preparing.
The next morning, Detective Morgan called.
“We found more information about Laura.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
“She wasn’t just connected to Michael’s company.”
I waited.
“She helped create some of the legal structures Ryan is using now.”
My hands tightened.
“What legal structures?”
“The custody plan.”
The room became silent.
“The financial trust.”
“The emergency documents.”
My stomach dropped.
“So she helped him.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she pretend to help me?”
Morgan answered:
“Because being close to you gave her access.”
Access.
That word hurt.
Because it meant I wasn’t just betrayed.
I was studied.
Later that day, Ryan contacted me.
Not by phone.
Through a message.
We need to talk.
I ignored it.
Another message came.
You don’t understand what’s happening.
I stared at the screen.
Then another.
Diane is lying to you.
I almost deleted the message.
Almost.
Then:
She didn’t save you that night. She saved herself.
I looked at Diane.
Because now I knew one thing about Ryan.
He mixed truth with lies.
That was how he controlled people.
He didn’t create fake stories.
He twisted real ones.
I asked Diane directly.
“Did you know Laura?”
She didn’t pretend.
“Yes.”
“How well?”
Diane looked away.
“Very well.”
“How?”
A long silence.
Then:
“She helped me years ago.”
“With what?”
Diane’s eyes filled with regret.
“The Michael case.”
I froze.
“The case you covered up?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
“So Laura knew everything.”
“Yes.”
“And Ryan knew she knew.”
“Yes.”
The pieces connected.
Ryan had chosen Laura because she was not just an attorney.
She was someone who understood the family secrets.
Someone who knew where the bodies were buried.
That evening, Detective Morgan found the final piece.
A hidden recording.
From Ryan’s office.
The date was three months before my pregnancy.
Before the custody plan.
Before the hospital incident.
Before everything.
The recording started.
Ryan’s voice.
“Emily is perfect.”
My blood ran cold.
A woman answered.
Laura.
“What about her?”
Ryan laughed.
“She trusts people too easily.”
Silence.
Then Laura asked:
“And the baby?”
Ryan answered:
“That’s the reason she’s valuable.”
I covered my mouth.
The recording continued.
Laura asked:
“Are you sure this will work?”
Ryan replied:
“My father taught me something.”
A pause.
“People don’t fight when they think they’re loved.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because there it was.
The truth.
Ryan had never been building a family.
He had been building a trap.
That night, something unexpected happened.
Diane received a letter.
No return address.
No signature.
Only one sentence on the front.
“You failed to protect him.”
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Ryan as a teenager.
Standing beside his father.
But behind them was something else.
A newspaper article.
The headline:
“Teen Witness Disappears Before Corporate Fraud Trial.”
Diane stared at it.
Then whispered:
“No.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
Her hands started shaking.
“That girl.”
“What girl?”
Diane pointed at the photograph.
A young woman standing in the background.
The same woman from the old documents.
The same woman connected to Michael’s company.
The same woman who knew Ryan before I did.
Diane whispered:
“She’s alive.”
I felt a chill.
“Who?”
Diane looked at me.
And said a name I had never heard before.
“Michael’s daughter.”
The room went silent.
Because suddenly we realized something.
Ryan wasn’t the only person carrying his father’s secrets.
Someone else had been waiting.
May you like
Someone else wanted revenge.
And someone else had been watching us from the beginning.
