CHAPTER 5 – THE EVIDENCE THAT COULD DESTROY THEM ALL

The phone remained against my ear long after Brooke stopped speaking.

I didn’t know if the call had ended.

I didn’t know if she was still there.

I only knew one thing.

The sentence she left me with kept repeating inside my head.

“You’re not the first woman he tried to destroy.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

The hospital room was dark except for the soft glow of the machines beside my bed.

My baby was sleeping peacefully inside me.

A life that had no idea how much danger surrounded us.

A life that deserved better than the world Ryan was trying to create.

“Emily?”

Diane’s voice pulled me back.

I looked over.

She was standing near the window.

She had been awake too.

Maybe she had heard enough to understand.

“Who was that?”

I stared at the phone.

“Brooke.”

Diane’s expression changed.

“She called you?”

I nodded.

“She said Ryan has done this before.”

For a moment, Diane said nothing.

And that silence told me more than words could.

“You knew.”

Her face fell.

“Not everything.”

“But you knew something.”

Diane sat down slowly.

“Yes.”

I looked away.

Another secret.

Another thing someone knew except me.

It felt like my entire marriage had been a room full of locked doors.

And I was the only person without the keys.

“What happened before me?”

Diane took a deep breath.

“Before you met Ryan…”

She stopped.

“Ryan was engaged.”

I looked back at her.

“He never told me that.”

“Of course he didn’t.”

The sadness in her voice was worse than anger.

“Who was she?”

Diane hesitated.

“Her name was Rachel.”

The next morning, Detective Morgan returned.

I told him about Brooke’s call.

He immediately requested her contact information.

“She may be an important witness.”

I looked at him.

“She was his affair partner.”

Morgan nodded.

“That doesn’t mean she cannot also be a victim.”

Those words stayed with me.

Because I realized something difficult.

Ryan had created a world where everyone around him became damaged.

Me.

Diane.

Brooke.

Maybe even himself.

But understanding someone’s pain did not erase what they did.

Brooke agreed to meet.

Not at the hospital.

Not anywhere connected to Ryan.

We chose a quiet café two blocks away.

I arrived early.

Part of me wanted to hate her.

I wanted her to be exactly what I imagined.

A woman who knowingly destroyed another woman’s marriage.

But when she walked in…

That image disappeared.

She looked exhausted.

Not confident.

Not proud.

Scared.

She sat across from me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Finally she whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

I looked at her.

“You knew he was married.”

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“You knew I was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised me.

“I’m not going to pretend I was innocent.”

Her voice shook.

“I made a terrible choice.”

I stayed silent.

“But Ryan lied to me too.”

I frowned.

“What did he tell you?”

“That he was trapped.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course he did.”

Brooke nodded.

“He told me you were unstable.”

My jaw tightened.

“He said you were controlling.”

She looked ashamed.

“He said he was afraid of you.”

I stared at her.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Ryan had been telling another woman the same story he was now telling the police.

He had reversed everything.

He had made himself the victim.

Brooke continued.

“At first, I believed him.”

She looked at her hands.

“Because he was convincing.”

I knew exactly what she meant.

Ryan wasn’t cruel all the time.

That was what made him dangerous.

He could be charming.

He could be gentle.

He could make people forget the moments when he wasn’t.

“He started changing after I found out about the baby.”

My heart tightened.

“What do you mean?”

Brooke looked at me.

“He wasn’t angry that you were pregnant.”

She paused.

“He was angry because the baby gave him less control.”

I listened carefully.

“He told me after the birth, he would take the child and leave.”

My blood ran cold.

“The same thing he planned with me.”

Brooke nodded.

“Then I realized something.”

“What?”

“He didn’t love me.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He loved having someone who believed him.”

When I returned to the hospital, Diane was waiting.

She knew immediately something had changed.

“What did she tell you?”

I placed my bag down.

“She wasn’t the plan.”

Diane looked confused.

“What?”

“Ryan wasn’t building a future with Brooke.”

I looked at her.

“He was using her.”

Diane closed her eyes.

Because deep down, she already knew.

“He does that.”

Her voice was quiet.

“He makes people feel special.”

Then he makes them dependent.

Then he makes them afraid.

That afternoon, Detective Morgan discovered Rachel.

The first fiancée.

She was living in another state.

She agreed to speak.

The video call lasted less than twenty minutes.

But those twenty minutes changed everything.

Rachel looked at me through the screen.

“I knew this day would come.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened between you and Ryan?”

She took a breath.

“I left because I realized I was not his partner.”

“What were you?”

Her answer was immediate.

“An investment.”

The word shocked me.

Rachel explained.

Ryan had a pattern.

He chose women who were successful.

Independent.

Kind.

Women who had something he wanted.

Then slowly…

He changed the relationship.

He isolated them.

He made them question themselves.

He convinced them they needed him.

“Did he ever hurt you physically?”

Rachel looked down.

“Not like he hurt you.”

A pause.

“But he hurt me.”

She explained how Ryan controlled her finances.

How he threatened to ruin her reputation.

How he convinced her nobody would believe her.

Then she said something that made Diane freeze.

“His mother knew.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Diane.

Rachel continued.

“Diane found me after I left.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You knew about Rachel too?”

Diane looked devastated.

“I tried to help her.”

Rachel nodded.

“She did.”

“Then why didn’t you expose him?”

Diane looked away.

“Because I was afraid.”

That night, Detective Morgan called.

His voice was serious.

“We found something.”

I sat up.

“What?”

“A hidden account.”

“Ryan’s?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Morgan paused.

“It’s connected to a company that no longer exists.”

I waited.

“The company belonged to Michael Carter.”

I froze.

“Ryan’s father?”

“Yes.”

Diane stood immediately.

“What did you find?”

Morgan answered:

“Records.”

“What kind of records?”

His voice became lower.

“Payments.”

A pause.

“Payments made to women.”

My heart sank.

“How many?”

Another pause.

“Seven.”

The room went silent.

Seven women.

Seven stories.

Seven people who had been hurt.

And Ryan was connected to all of them.

The next morning, police searched Ryan’s office.

They found documents.

Emails.

Photos.

A hidden notebook.

And one page that made everyone stop.

A list.

Names.

Dates.

Notes.

The first name was Rachel.

The second was Brooke.

The third was mine.

Emily Carter.

Beside my name were three words.

“Final opportunity.”

I stared at the paper.

My hands went cold.

“What does that mean?”

Detective Morgan didn’t answer.

Because everyone already understood.

Ryan had not lost control that night.

He had reached the final stage of a plan.

A plan that started before I knew anything was wrong.

That evening, Ryan called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Emily.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“What do you want?”

A pause.

“I want to fix this.”

I almost smiled.

“Fix this?”

“Yes.”

“You tried to take my baby.”

“That’s not true.”

“You lied about me.”

“You’re emotional.”

There it was.

The word.

The excuse.

The way he always dismissed me.

But this time, I was ready.

“You know what’s different now, Ryan?”

Silence.

“I believe myself.”

He stopped talking.

For the first time…

He had no control over the conversation.

Then his voice changed.

“You think Diane can protect you?”

I looked at Diane.

Standing beside me.

“I think the truth can.”

Ryan laughed quietly.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.”

Then he whispered:

“But you will.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Because I finally understood.

Ryan was not trying to save our marriage.

He was trying to save himself.

And he was willing to destroy anyone standing in his way.

Including his own mother.

May you like

Including me.

Including our child.
