CHAPTER 8 THE MAN WHO STOOD BESIDE MY FATHER'S GRAVE

For several seconds, I couldn't look at Daniel.
The church was silent.
My mother stood behind me.
Jonathan was somewhere outside, trying to make sure no one had followed us.
And Daniel—
the man I had trusted for years—
was staring at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“You remember,” he said quietly.
I couldn't speak.
The memory had returned in fragments.
Rain falling against black umbrellas.
My father's coffin disappearing beneath the earth.
Flynn standing beside me.
Jonathan several feet away.
And a stranger placing a hand on my shoulder.
Your father would have wanted you to be strong.
That stranger was Daniel.
But Daniel had never told me he attended the funeral.
I took a step backward.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at my mother.
Then at me.
“Because your father asked me to be.”
My mother shook her head.
“No.”
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“Your father knew what was coming.”
“He knew he was going to die?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he knew you would try to stop him.”
I stared at Daniel.
“Stop him from what?”
“From protecting you.”
My mother's voice trembled.
“Daniel, you promised.”
He looked at her.
“I promised Richard.”
“Not him.”
I frowned.
“Who is Richard?”
My mother suddenly went pale.
Daniel answered.
“Your grandfather.”
My heart stopped.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“He's dead.”
“No.”
The word landed like a stone.
“No?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Your grandfather disappeared twenty-four years ago.”
My mother closed her eyes.
I looked at her.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you let me believe he was dead?”
“He had to disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because he discovered what Margaret had done.”
I felt a chill.
“Margaret.”
My stepmother.
My father's sister.
The woman who had supposedly died.
The woman who had taken Clara.
The woman who controlled the original fortune.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where is Margaret?”
He didn't answer.
“Where is she?”
“She has Clara.”
My heart tightened.
“Take me to her.”
“I can't.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret isn't alone.”
“Who is with her?”
Daniel looked toward the church doors.
Then whispered:
“Flynn.”
I froze.
“Flynn is with Margaret?”
“Yes.”
“But he was arrested.”
“He was released.”
“When?”
I felt sick.
“So the whole thing was planned.”
“Not entirely.”
“What wasn't planned?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Your reaction.”
I stared.
He continued.
“Flynn expected you to break.”
“He underestimated me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he never understood your father.”
I stepped closer.
“What did my father know about Flynn?”
Daniel's expression darkened.
“He knew Flynn wasn't after your money.”
I frowned.
“Then what does he want?”
“Control.”
“Of Vance Global?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Daniel looked at the drive in my hand.
“That.”
We left the church through the rear entrance.
My mother stayed close to me.
Daniel led us to an old black sedan.
I didn't ask where Jonathan was.
I couldn't trust anyone anymore.
We drove north along the coast.
The road was dark.
Rain continued to fall.
After ten minutes, my mother finally spoke.
“There is something I never told you.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“Your father didn't create the Hart Meridian trust.”
“Then who did?”
“Your grandfather.”
“When?”
“Before you were born.”
“Why?”
“To protect our family from Margaret.”
I frowned.
“Why would he need protection from his own daughter?”
“Because Margaret wanted the money.”
“How much?”
My mother looked at Daniel.
He answered.
“Approximately four billion dollars.”
I stared.
“Four billion?”
“That was the original value.”
“And now?”
“Much more.”
My chest tightened.
“So Margaret has been trying to get the trust for decades.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't my father stop her?”
“He did.”
“How?”
“He transferred the controlling interest to you.”
I looked at Daniel.
“When?”
“The day you were born.”
I couldn't believe it.
“My father gave me control of Vance Global before I could even walk.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because your father wanted you to grow up without knowing.”
“So Flynn knew.”
“Yes.”
“And married me anyway.”
Daniel didn't answer.
I looked out the window.
Three years of my life suddenly felt like a carefully designed trap.
Then another thought struck me.
“Why did Flynn give me only $1,800 a month?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Because he wanted you to believe you were financially dependent.”
“That part I know.”
“No.”
He paused.
“He also wanted to test whether you would ask questions.”
“What questions?”
“About your own money.”
I frowned.
“If I had asked for more?”
“He would have known you were becoming suspicious.”
I felt cold.
“And if I didn't?”
“He knew you were still trusting him.”
I closed my eyes.
Flynn had been studying me.
Measuring me.
Waiting.
“For three years.”
“Yes.”
I opened my eyes.
“Why did he cheat with Selina?”
Daniel looked away.
“That was real.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“His relationship with Selina wasn't part of the original plan.”
“So he actually cheated on me.”
“Yes.”
I almost laughed.
Of all the lies, that one was somehow the easiest to believe.
Flynn had been manipulating me for years.
But apparently, somewhere along the way, he had also genuinely fallen for another woman.
Maybe that was why Selina had the necklace.
Maybe that was why he defended her.
Maybe that was why his face had changed when I confronted him.
For the first time, I felt something other than anger.
Disgust.
Not because he betrayed me.
Because I had once loved him.
And I had mistaken his ability to manipulate me for love.
The car stopped outside an abandoned mansion.
I recognized it.
My father had taken me there once when I was twelve.
He had called it an old family property.
It had been empty.
At least, that's what I thought.
Daniel turned off the engine.
“She's inside.”
“Margaret?”
“Yes.”
“Flynn?”
“Yes.”
“My daughter?”
“Yes.”
I opened the door.
Daniel grabbed my wrist.
“Wait.”
I looked at him.
“Don't go in yet.”
“Why?”
“Because Margaret wants the drive.”
“I know.”
“She also wants something else.”
“What?”
“You.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the trust won't fully activate until you authorize the final transfer.”
My blood ran cold.
“What transfer?”
“Your father created a contingency clause.”
“What clause?”
“If the family is threatened, the controlling assets automatically move into a protected entity.”
“Who controls it?”
“You.”
“And what does Margaret want?”
“To force you to transfer control voluntarily.”
I understood.
“She wants my signature.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she can't break the trust.”
“So she needs me to do it.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Daniel.
“And Flynn?”
“He is supposed to convince you.”
“By using Clara.”
“Yes.”
I opened the door.
Daniel said:
“Mabel.”
I turned.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
“If Flynn tells you he loves you…”
He paused.
“Don't believe him.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because he may be telling the truth.”
I froze.
Then I stepped out.
The mansion doors were unlocked.
I walked inside.
The hallway was dark.
“Clara?”
No answer.
I heard footsteps upstairs.
Then a child's voice.
“Mommy?”
My heart broke.
“Clara!”
I ran upstairs.
At the end of the hallway, Clara stood beside Flynn.
She wasn't crying.
She looked frightened.
But unharmed.
I rushed toward her.
Flynn stepped in front of me.
“Don't.”
“Move.”
“She's safe.”
“Let me see her.”
He looked at Clara.
“Go to the room.”
Clara ran toward a nearby bedroom.
I watched her disappear.
Then looked at Flynn.
“What are you doing?”
“I didn't take her.”
“You brought her here.”
“Yes.”
“You helped them.”
“I was trying to keep her alive.”
“By kidnapping her?”
“I knew Margaret was coming.”
“You could have called me.”
“She would have killed her.”
I stared.
“Margaret?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she thinks Clara is the key to the trust.”
“She's a child.”
“To Margaret, she's an inheritance.”
I looked at him.
“And you're what?”
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
“You've lied to me for three years.”
“Yes.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Yes.”
“You stole from my father's trust.”
“Yes.”
“You slept with Selina.”
His face tightened.
“Yes.”
“You humiliated me.”
“I know.”
“And now you want me to believe you're protecting me?”
“I don't expect you to believe me.”
“Good.”
I turned toward Clara.
Flynn caught my arm.
“Wait.”
I pulled away.
“What?”
“I need to tell you something.”
“What?”
He looked exhausted.
“I didn't marry you for your money.”
I laughed.
“You knew about the trust.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about my father's empire.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I controlled it.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you marry me?”
He stared at me.
“Because your father asked me to.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Your father came to me.”
“When?”
“Six months before your wedding.”
I couldn't speak.
“He told me someone was trying to kill you.”
“And he asked you to marry me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.”
“It wasn't supposed to.”
“What did he tell you?”
Flynn looked toward the staircase.
“He told me that if I married you, Margaret would believe I was trying to control the trust.”
“And that would protect me?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you treat me like garbage?”
His face tightened.
“Because Margaret was watching.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“She had people inside the company.”
“Selina?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
“Jonathan?”
Flynn hesitated.
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“Jonathan worked for your father.”
“Then who did Margaret have?”
Flynn looked at me.
“Your father.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“Your father had been compromised.”
My blood ran cold.
“By whom?”
Flynn whispered:
“Your mother.”
I turned.
My mother stood at the top of the staircase.
She was crying.
Flynn looked at her.
“You knew this day would come.”
My mother slowly descended.
“Yes.”
I stared at her.
“Mom?”
She looked at me.
“I didn't betray your father.”
Flynn interrupted.
“She didn't.”
“Then what happened?”
My mother reached the bottom step.
“Your father believed I had betrayed him.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then why did he think you did?”
“Because Margaret made him believe it.”
I felt dizzy.
“Margaret?”
My mother nodded.
“She forged letters.”
“What letters?”
“Letters between me and Richard Vance.”
“Why?”
“To make your father believe I was working with Richard.”
“And he believed her?”
“For a while.”
“What happened?”
“He discovered the truth.”
“When?”
“The night he died.”
I looked at Flynn.
“And you were there.”
“Yes.”
“What did my father tell you?”
Flynn closed his eyes.
“He told me to protect you.”
My voice broke.
“And did you?”
“I tried.”
“By cheating on me?”
He looked at the floor.
“No.”
That answer was honest.
It hurt more than a lie.
“Then why?”
“Because I was angry.”
“At me?”
“At your father.”
“Why?”
“Because he used you as a weapon.”
I stared.
“He made me marry you to protect the trust.”
“Yes.”
“He never told me.”
“No.”
“He made me believe I chose you.”
“Yes.”
“And you hated him for it.”
“Yes.”
“So you punished me.”
Flynn looked at me.
“Yes.”
I stepped backward.
At least now the cruelty had a name.
It wasn't love.
It wasn't protection.
It was revenge.
And I had paid the price for someone else's war.
Then a voice came from the doorway.
“Enough.”
We all turned.
Margaret stood there.
She was wearing a black coat.
In her hand was a gun.
Beside her stood Selina.
And behind them—
Clara.
My heart stopped.
Margaret smiled.
“Family reunion.”
She looked at me.
“Give me the drive.”
I tightened my grip.
“No.”
She lifted the gun.
“Then your daughter dies.”
Flynn moved immediately.
“Margaret!”
She aimed at him.
“You've disappointed me enough.”
Selina stepped forward.
“You were supposed to convince her.”
Flynn looked at Selina.
“You lied to me.”
Selina smiled.
“You were always easy to manipulate.”
Flynn stared at her.
Then at Margaret.
I suddenly understood.
Selina hadn't been Flynn's secret weapon.
She had been Margaret's.
The necklace.
The affair.
The video.
Everything.
Selina had deliberately exposed them.
She wanted the scandal.
She wanted Flynn removed.
She wanted me frightened.
She wanted control of the trust.
Margaret looked at me.
“You have ten seconds.”
I looked at Clara.
Then at Flynn.
Then at my mother.
My hand tightened around the drive.
But before I could speak—
the front doors exploded open.
Police stormed into the mansion.
“DROP THE WEAPON!”
Margaret turned.
Selina screamed.
Flynn grabbed Clara.
My mother pulled me down.
Gunfire erupted.
One shot.
Then another.
Margaret collapsed.
The gun slid across the floor.
Selina was arrested.
Clara ran into my arms.
I held her so tightly she could barely breathe.
“Mommy!”
“I'm here.”
I kissed her hair.
“I've got you.”
Then I looked toward Flynn.
He was standing across the room.
Blood covered his shirt.
He had been shot.
“Flynn!”
He dropped to one knee.
I ran toward him.
But he raised his hand.
“Don't.”
“You're bleeding.”
“I know.”
“Let me help you.”
He looked at me.
“Take care of Clara.”
“Flynn—”
He smiled faintly.
“For once…”
His eyes closed.
“…I did something right.”
The police rushed toward him.
I stood frozen.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
I opened the message.
MARGARET WAS ONLY THE FIRST.
Another message followed.
YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHO YOUR FATHER REALLY WAS.
Then a photograph.
A man standing beside my father.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Alive.
My hands began shaking.
It was the man Daniel had said was dead.
My grandfather.
And beneath the photograph was one final sentence:
HE WANTS TO MEET YOU.
I stared at the screen.
My mother saw the photograph.
Her face turned white.
“That's impossible.”
“Why?”
She whispered:
“Because your grandfather died twenty-four years ago.”
I looked at the photograph again.
Then at my mother.
And suddenly, the entire story changed.
Because if that man was really my grandfather—
then someone had spent twenty-four years pretending he was dead.
And if my grandfather was alive…
the secret behind Vance Global had never been buried.
May you like
It had been waiting.
For me.
