CHAPTER 12 THE MAN WHO HAD BEEN PROTECTING ME

The screen went black.
But Jonathan's face remained burned into my mind.
I'm sorry, Mabel.
I couldn't reconcile the man I'd known for years with the man standing beside my daughter.
My lawyer.
My father's most trusted associate.
The man who had told me to leave the parking garage.
The man who had warned me about Flynn.
The man who had repeatedly claimed he was protecting me.
Now he was standing beside Clara while Richard Vance watched.
I turned toward my grandfather.
“You said Jonathan has been protecting me for twenty years.”
“Yes.”
“Then why does he have Clara?”
“Because he isn't working for Richard.”
I stared.
“Then what is happening?”
My grandfather didn't answer.
Eleanor suddenly grabbed my hand.
“Don't make a decision until you hear Jonathan's explanation.”
“He has my daughter.”
“I know.”
“He betrayed me.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you defending him?”
“Because I know what he sacrificed.”
I pulled my hand away.
“Everyone keeps telling me someone sacrificed something for me.”
My voice broke.
“My father.”
“My mother.”
“You.”
“Jonathan.”
“Flynn.”
“But nobody ever asked me what I wanted.”
Silence.
I looked at the countdown.
59:43:06.
“I'm going to get Clara.”
My grandfather stepped forward.
“Not yet.”
I stared at him.
“You don't get to tell me what to do.”
“No.”
He looked at me calmly.
“But I can tell you what will happen if you walk into that building unprepared.”
“What?”
“Richard will kill Jonathan.”
My heart stopped.
“Why?”
“Because Jonathan knows where the original ledger is.”
I frowned.
“I thought I had the ledger.”
“You have a copy.”
“What?”
“The drive contains only the digital archive.”
“Then where is the original?”
My grandfather looked at Eleanor.
She answered.
“Jonathan has it.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Because your father gave it to him the night he died.”
My heart pounded.
“And Jonathan has kept it for twenty-three years.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't he give it to me?”
“Because he was waiting for the right moment.”
“What moment?”
My grandfather looked at the countdown.
“Now.”
I demanded the full story.
No more fragments.
No more half-truths.
No more carefully edited explanations.
My grandfather finally agreed.
We sat in the underground vault.
Eleanor beside me.
Daniel across from us.
The lights were dim.
The old documents surrounded us.
I felt as though I were sitting inside the grave of a family I had never truly known.
My grandfather began.
“Your father met Eleanor when they were both young.”
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
“They were business partners.”
“Were they lovers?”
She nodded.
“Yes.”
I looked at her.
“And Flynn?”
“He was their first child.”
I stared.
“Me?”
“You were their second.”
My chest tightened.
“Then why did Richard Vance raise Flynn?”
“Because your grandfather feared Eleanor.”
“Why?”
“Because she wanted to dismantle Meridian.”
I looked at Eleanor.
“Why?”
She took a breath.
“Because Meridian had changed.”
“How?”
“It started as a protection network.”
“For families.”
“Yes.”
“But gradually, powerful clients began using it to hide money.”
“Politicians.”
“Executives.”
“Foreign investors.”
“Criminal organizations.”
My grandfather interrupted.
“I tried to stop it.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You created it.”
“And I realized I had created something I couldn't control.”
I stared at them.
“So my father inherited a monster.”
“Yes.”
“And instead of destroying it…”
“He tried to control it.”
“And became part of it.”
My grandfather nodded.
“That was his mistake.”
I looked at the old photographs.
“Where does Margaret fit into all of this?”
My grandfather's expression hardened.
“Margaret was my daughter.”
“I know.”
“She wanted control.”
“Of Meridian.”
“Of everything.”
“She married your father to gain access.”
I frowned.
“My father married Margaret?”
“Yes.”
“And then he met Eleanor.”
“Yes.”
“That means my family…”
My voice trailed off.
My grandfather finished it.
“Was built on betrayal.”
I looked at Eleanor.
“Why didn't you leave?”
“Because I was pregnant.”
“With me?”
“With you.”
My heart broke.
“What happened after I was born?”
Eleanor looked at me.
“Your father took you.”
“Why?”
“He believed Margaret would kill you.”
“Did she try?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three weeks after you were born.”
I froze.
“What happened?”
“She entered the nursery.”
“And?”
“She tried to suffocate you.”
My stomach turned.
“Why?”
“Because your birth activated the trust.”
I stared.
“How?”
Eleanor explained.
“Your grandfather had established a succession clause.”
“What clause?”
“If I ever had a child, that child would become the primary beneficiary.”
“Why?”
“Because I was the only person he trusted to eventually destroy Meridian.”
I shook my head.
“Then why did my father take me?”
“Because he wanted to use the trust for himself.”
I looked at my grandfather.
“And you allowed it?”
“No.”
“What did you do?”
“I disappeared.”
“To protect yourself?”
“To protect you.”
I didn't know whether to believe him.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Your grandfather didn't disappear because he was afraid.”
“Why?”
“Because he was hunted.”
“By whom?”
“Margaret.”
“And Richard?”
“Richard helped her.”
I looked at him.
“So they were working together.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did Richard pretend to be Margaret's enemy?”
“Because he wanted the company for himself.”
I understood.
Everyone had been competing for control.
Margaret wanted Meridian.
Richard wanted Vance Global.
My father wanted both.
Eleanor wanted to destroy everything.
My grandfather wanted to contain it.
And I—
I had been the inheritance.
I stood.
“Take me to Jonathan.”
Daniel shook his head.
“We don't know where he is.”
“I do.”
Everyone looked at me.
I held up my phone.
“When Richard called, I noticed something.”
“What?”
“The background.”
Daniel frowned.
“What about it?”
“There was a clock.”
He looked at me.
“So?”
“The Meridian facility doesn't have clocks.”
My grandfather stared.
“Where?”
“Vance Global's old executive building.”
Daniel immediately understood.
“The private boardroom.”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“That's where they are.”
My grandfather shook his head.
“It's a trap.”
“I know.”
“Then why go?”
“Because Clara is there.”
He looked at me.
“Then I'm coming.”
“No.”
“You need me.”
“I need someone who knows the building.”
Daniel raised his hand.
“I'll go.”
I looked at him.
“Fine.”
My mother stood.
“I’m coming too.”
“No.”
“I'm her grandmother.”
“She doesn't know you.”
“She will.”
I looked at Eleanor.
“You're staying.”
She nodded.
“I understand.”
Before we left, she grabbed my hand.
“Mabel.”
I looked at her.
“I spent twenty-three years believing I would never hold you.”
She started crying.
“I won't lose you now.”
I squeezed her hand.
“You won't.”
The Vance Global building was nearly empty.
It was after midnight.
The lobby lights were off.
The elevators were locked.
Daniel used an old security credential.
The elevator opened.
We went to the top floor.
The private boardroom doors were closed.
I could hear voices.
One was Jonathan.
The other was Richard.
Then Clara's voice.
“Mommy?”
My heart broke.
I opened the door.
“Clara!”
She ran toward me.
Jonathan caught her hand.
“Wait.”
I stopped.
Richard stood near the window.
He was holding a gun.
Jonathan stood beside Clara.
But something was wrong.
Jonathan wasn't pointing a weapon at her.
He was protecting her.
He was standing between her and Richard.
I looked at him.
“Jonathan.”
He looked exhausted.
“Mabel.”
“Let her go.”
“I will.”
“Now.”
Richard laughed.
“Not yet.”
I turned toward him.
“You wanted the drive.”
“Yes.”
“You have it.”
“No.”
I held it up.
“You wanted this.”
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Put it on the table.”
I did.
He stepped forward.
Jonathan grabbed Clara and moved backward.
Richard raised the gun.
“Give me the drive.”
I looked at Jonathan.
Then at Clara.
Then at Richard.
“You're not getting it.”
Richard smiled.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
“The drive doesn't contain the real information.”
I froze.
“What?”
“It contains a decoy.”
I looked at Jonathan.
He nodded.
“Your father created two ledgers.”
I felt sick.
“One digital.”
“One physical.”
“Jonathan has the physical one.”
Richard laughed.
“Exactly.”
I turned toward Jonathan.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was waiting for you to be ready.”
“Ready for what?”
“To know who your father really was.”
I stared at him.
“And who was he?”
Jonathan's eyes filled with regret.
“Your father was the person who ordered your kidnapping.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“He ordered me to take you from Eleanor.”
I looked at my mother through the glass doors.
She wasn't inside.
I felt betrayed all over again.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“You took me?”
“When you were a baby.”
“You stole me from my mother.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Your father believed Eleanor would destroy the trust.”
“She wanted to destroy Meridian.”
“Yes.”
“And he wanted to control it.”
“Yes.”
I couldn't breathe.
“You ruined my entire life.”
Jonathan lowered his eyes.
“I know.”
“You let me call another woman Mom.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me grow up.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me marry Flynn.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Flynn was my biological half-brother.”
“No.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I didn't know.”
“Then who knew?”
Jonathan looked at Richard.
“Richard.”
I turned.
Richard smiled.
“I knew everything.”
“Then why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I needed you married.”
“For what?”
“The trust.”
I understood.
“Flynn married me because you wanted him inside Meridian.”
“Yes.”
“And Selina?”
“Another piece.”
“Margaret?”
“Another.”
“Everyone.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Clara.
“And my daughter?”
Richard smiled.
“The final piece.”
My stomach turned.
“What does that mean?”
“The trust has one final requirement.”
“What?”
“Your biological heir must willingly assume control.”
I frowned.
“Clara.”
“Yes.”
“She's five.”
“Exactly.”
He smiled.
“She can be manipulated.”
I stepped between him and my daughter.
“You'll never touch her.”
Richard raised the gun.
“Then give me the ledger.”
Jonathan stepped forward.
“No.”
Richard shot him.
The sound exploded through the room.
Jonathan collapsed.
“Jonathan!”
Clara screamed.
I ran toward him.
Blood spread across his shirt.
Richard grabbed Clara.
I turned.
“Let her go!”
He pressed the gun against her head.
“Ledger.”
I reached into my bag.
Then stopped.
Because I saw something.
Jonathan was conscious.
His eyes met mine.
He subtly shook his head.
No.
Don't give it to him.
Then he moved his hand.
A tiny flash drive fell from his palm.
It landed beneath the table.
I understood.
The physical ledger wasn't with Jonathan.
He had hidden it.
And the flash drive was the key.
I kicked it toward myself.
Richard didn't notice.
I picked it up.
Then looked at him.
“Fine.”
I held out the drive.
“Take it.”
He grabbed it.
He looked down.
Then laughed.
“You really are your father's daughter.”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you're lying.”
He pulled out his phone.
The drive was already connected.
His smile disappeared.
“What is this?”
I smiled.
“The wrong drive.”
Richard looked at me.
“What?”
“You wanted the ledger.”
I stepped backward.
“You got the decoy.”
His face turned furious.
“Where is the real one?”
I looked at Jonathan.
He smiled weakly.
“Too late.”
The doors burst open.
Federal agents stormed the room.
Richard tried to grab Clara.
I pulled her away.
Agents tackled him.
He screamed.
“You don't understand!”
“I understand perfectly.”
He was handcuffed.
I ran to Jonathan.
He was still conscious.
Barely.
I knelt beside him.
“Why did you do this?”
He looked at me.
“Because your father asked me to.”
I shook my head.
“Again?”
He smiled faintly.
“This time…”
He coughed.
“…it was worth it.”
I held his hand.
“You should have told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“That you would hate me.”
I looked at him.
“I do.”
He smiled.
“I deserve that.”
The paramedics arrived.
As they carried him away, he grabbed my wrist.
“Mabel.”
“What?”
“Your grandfather is lying.”
I froze.
“About what?”
Jonathan's eyes filled with fear.
“Your grandfather didn't create Meridian.”
My blood went cold.
“Then who did?”
He looked toward Richard.
Then whispered:
“Eleanor.”
I turned.
My mother stood at the doorway.
Eleanor.
My biological mother.
The woman who had claimed she wanted to destroy Meridian.
Jonathan continued:
“She created it.”
I stared at Eleanor.
Her expression didn't change.
Jonathan's voice became weaker.
“And she didn't create it to protect children.”
He looked at me.
“She created it to control governments.”
The room went silent.
My mother stepped forward.
“Mabel…”
I stood.
“Don't.”
She stopped.
Jonathan was taken away.
Richard was dragged out.
Clara was safe.
But my world had just collapsed again.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Is it true?”
She didn't answer.
“Mom.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
“You built Meridian.”
“Yes.”
“To control governments.”
“Yes.”
“And my grandfather took it from you.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“He tried.”
I stared.
“Then what happened?”
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Your grandfather didn't steal Meridian from me.”
She whispered:
“He stole it from your father.”
I froze.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
She looked at Clara.
“And now…”
Her voice trembled.
“…it's coming back to you.”
I stared at the countdown on the wall.
41:12:08.
Then every screen in the room suddenly switched on.
A red warning appeared.
SUCCESSION PROTOCOL INITIATED.
PRIMARY HEIR: MABEL HART.
SECONDARY HEIR: CLARA HART.
Then another line appeared.
FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
I stared.
“What authorization?”
Eleanor looked at me.
“Yours.”
I felt my stomach drop.
“For what?”
“To activate Meridian.”
I stepped backward.
“No.”
Eleanor's face changed.
“Mabel…”
“I won't.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
She stepped toward me.
“If you don't activate it…”
“What?”
She looked at Clara.
“…the trust will automatically transfer to the person holding the original biometric key.”
I froze.
“Who has it?”
Eleanor looked at me.
Then at the door.
A shadow appeared.
A man entered.
He was older.
Gray-haired.
Calm.
He carried a small black case.
I recognized him.
My grandfather.
But he was supposed to be outside.
He smiled.
“I have the key.”
My blood turned cold.
And then he said:
“Now, Mabel, we can finally begin.”
I looked at Clara.
Then at my grandfather.
Then at my mother.
And realized the worst part wasn't that my family had lied to me.
It was that every lie had been designed to bring me here.
To this exact room.
At this exact moment.
With my daughter beside me.
And a choice I had never agreed to make.
Activate Meridian.
Or lose control of everything.
The countdown continued.
May you like
40:59:59.
And somewhere beneath Boston, another vault began to open.
