CHAPTER 11 THE NIGHT MY FATHER TRIED TO KILL ME

The countdown continued.

71:59:42.

71:59:41.

71:59:40.

I stared at the screen, unable to understand what I was seeing.

MERIDIAN SUCCESSOR CONFIRMED.

MABEL HART.

SECOND SUCCESSOR: CLARA HART.

Then my grandfather spoke.

“Now you understand why everyone has been fighting over you.”

I turned toward him.

“No.”

My voice was barely audible.

“I don't understand anything.”

“You will.”

“Why does Clara inherit anything?”

“Because the bloodline has to continue.”

“What bloodline?”

“The Hart line.”

I shook my head.

“You said my father tried to kill me.”

“He did.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed killing you was the only way to prevent the trust from activating.”

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

“Is that true?”

She nodded.

I felt sick.

“What happened the night I was born?”

My grandfather's expression hardened.

“Your father discovered that you had been named the primary beneficiary of Meridian.”

“And?”

“He panicked.”

“Why?”

“Because he had already signed an agreement with Margaret.”

“What agreement?”

“To transfer control of Meridian to her.”

My blood ran cold.

“My father sold the trust?”

“He tried.”

“Why would he?”

“Because he needed money.”

“For what?”

My grandfather looked at Daniel.

“Ask him.”

I turned.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Your father had debts.”

“What kind?”

“Gambling.”

I stared.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Almost sixty million dollars.”

I couldn't believe it.

“He lost sixty million?”

“Over several years.”

“To whom?”

“Private lenders.”

“And Margaret paid them?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Richard Vance.”

My stomach tightened.

“Richard Vance?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted your father's shares.”

I suddenly understood.

The entire Vance Global empire had been built through debt.

My father had borrowed money.

Richard had purchased the debt.

And when my father couldn't pay—

Richard demanded control.

“But why did my father try to kill me?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Because your existence prevented the transfer.”

I stared.

“How?”

“You were the beneficiary.”

“And if I died?”

“The trust would transfer to Clara.”

I looked at my daughter.

“And if Clara died?”

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Then it would go to Margaret.”

My blood turned cold.

“So Margaret wanted both of us.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my grandfather.

“Then why did you let this happen?”

His expression hardened.

“Because I was trying to expose them.”

“You disappeared.”

“I went underground.”

“You let my father raise me.”

“Yes.”

“You let him lie to me.”

“Yes.”

“You let Flynn marry me.”

“I didn't know Flynn would.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone always says they didn't know.”

My grandfather stepped closer.

“But there is one thing you don't understand.”

“What?”

“Your father didn't try to kill you because he hated you.”

I stared at him.

“He did it because someone threatened him.”

“Who?”

“Richard Vance.”

I frowned.

“Richard was dead.”

“No.”

My grandfather shook his head.

“Richard died two years ago.”

“Then who threatened my father?”

My grandfather looked at me.

“His son.”

“Flynn?”

“Yes.”

I couldn't breathe.

“But Flynn was working for my father.”

“Exactly.”

I stared at the man I had once loved.

The man who had lied to me.

The man who had protected Clara.

The man who had been shot trying to save her.

Could Flynn really have threatened my father?

I remembered his face at the hospital.

His fear.

His confession.

His guilt.

Something didn't fit.

I turned toward my mother.

“Is Flynn dangerous?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

“But is he the one who tried to kill me?”

“No.”

I looked at my grandfather.

“Then why are you blaming him?”

He smiled faintly.

“Because he was there.”

“Where?”

“The night your father died.”

My heart pounded.

“What happened?”

My grandfather finally answered.

“Your father called Flynn.”

“Why?”

“To confess.”

“To confess what?”

“That he had stolen you from Eleanor.”

I froze.

“My father told Flynn the truth?”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“Flynn confronted him.”

“About me?”

“Yes.”

“What did Flynn do?”

“He demanded that your father return you to your mother.”

I stared.

“Then why didn't he?”

“Because your father refused.”

“What happened next?”

My grandfather looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Your father pulled a gun.”

My heart stopped.

“At Flynn?”

“No.”

“At Eleanor?”

“No.”

“At my mother?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“At you.”

I couldn't breathe.

“You were in the room?”

“No.”

“You were outside.”

“Yes.”

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

“And what did you do?”

“I shot him first.”

Silence.

I stared at Daniel.

“You killed my father.”

“Yes.”

My mother covered her face.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Your father ordered me to keep it secret.”

“You killed him to save me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did everyone say he died of a heart attack?”

“Because that was the only way to keep Margaret from knowing.”

I stepped backward.

“So my father didn't die naturally.”

“No.”

“He was murdered.”

“Yes.”

“And you killed him.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the drive.

“Then what is this?”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Evidence.”

“Of what?”

“Your father's final plan.”

My grandfather led us deeper into the facility.

A steel elevator descended beneath the building.

The walls became concrete.

No windows.

No cameras.

No sound.

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

A massive underground vault stretched ahead.

Hundreds of locked cabinets lined the walls.

My grandfather entered a code.

One cabinet opened.

Inside was a black box.

He handed it to me.

“This belonged to your father.”

I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

A wedding ring.

And a small handwritten notebook.

I opened the first page.

My father's handwriting.

Mabel,

If you ever find this, I'm already gone.

My hands shook.

I kept reading.

I have spent my entire life believing money could protect people.

I was wrong.

Money only makes people more desperate.

The next page:

I tried to protect you from Margaret.

Then from Richard.

Then from Flynn.

I froze.

Flynn.

My father's handwriting continued.

But I eventually realized the person I needed to protect you from most was myself.

My eyes filled with tears.

I turned the page.

I stole Mabel from Eleanor.

I stopped.

My mother gasped.

The next sentence:

I convinced myself it was necessary.

I told myself Eleanor was unstable.

I told myself Margaret would kill her.

I told myself Mabel would be safer with me.

Those were all lies.

I couldn't read anymore.

My father had stolen me.

Not to protect me.

But because he wanted control.

I turned another page.

The truth is that Mabel is not the heir because she is my daughter.

She is the heir because Eleanor made her the successor.

My heart stopped.

Eleanor.

My biological mother.

She had named me.

Why?

I looked toward her.

She was crying.

“Why did you make me the heir?”

She wiped her eyes.

“Because I wanted you to destroy Meridian.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew what it would become.”

I stared.

“What did you know?”

“That the people controlling it would eventually destroy each other.”

I looked at my grandfather.

“You created this.”

“Yes.”

“You gave Eleanor control.”

“Yes.”

“She named me successor.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did my father take me?”

My grandfather answered.

“Because he wanted the money.”

The simplicity of the answer was brutal.

My father had stolen his own daughter to control a fortune.

Flynn had married me because of the same fortune.

Margaret had kidnapped Clara because of the same fortune.

And everyone had called it love.

Protection.

Family.

It had all been greed.

I opened another file.

A bank statement.

A transfer.

$18,000,000

Recipient:

F.V.

Flynn Vance.

Date:

Three months before our wedding.

I stared.

“Flynn received eighteen million dollars?”

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

“Yes.”

“From whom?”

He checked the record.

“Richard Vance.”

“Why?”

“Debt settlement.”

My stomach tightened.

“Flynn owed Richard eighteen million?”

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Your father did.”

I frowned.

“Then why was the money sent to Flynn?”

“Because Flynn was acting as the intermediary.”

I remembered something.

Three months before our wedding, Flynn had suddenly become distant.

He had started talking about finances.

About protecting assets.

About how complicated my father's estate was.

I had thought he was stressed.

He had been preparing.

I opened another document.

TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION — HART MERIDIAN

My name.

My forged signature.

And beneath it:

WITNESS: SELINA SHAW.

I stared.

“Selina.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“Her real name is Selina Shaw.”

“You said she was Eleanor.”

“I am Eleanor.”

I frowned.

“Then who is Selina?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“My daughter.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Selina is my daughter.”

I stared at her.

“My half-sister?”

“Yes.”

I couldn't speak.

Everything was becoming absurd.

Eleanor continued:

“She was born after you.”

“Who is her father?”

“Richard Vance.”

My blood ran cold.

“Selina is Richard's daughter?”

“Yes.”

“So she infiltrated Vance Global.”

“To destroy it.”

“Then why was she sleeping with Flynn?”

“To manipulate him.”

“But Flynn loved her.”

“I know.”

I shook my head.

“So she used him.”

“Yes.”

“And Margaret?”

“Margaret used Selina.”

I closed my eyes.

It was an endless chain.

Everyone using everyone.

No one trusting anyone.

No one loving anyone.

Then I noticed something.

A photograph inside the box.

It showed my father holding baby Flynn.

On the back was written:

THE SON WHO NEVER KNEW WHO HE WAS.

I stared.

Then I saw another photograph.

My father.

Eleanor.

And another baby.

Me.

Two children.

One father.

One mother.

Flynn.

And me.

Except Flynn wasn't my brother.

He was my father's son by Eleanor.

Which meant Eleanor had given birth to both of us.

I looked at her.

“You're Flynn's mother too.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

My heart pounded.

“Then why didn't Flynn know?”

“Because Richard took him.”

“Why?”

“To use him against your father.”

I finally understood.

Flynn had spent his entire life being manipulated by men who knew his identity.

He wasn't merely an accomplice.

He was another victim.

That didn't erase what he'd done.

But it explained the cracks in his story.

Suddenly, an alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at the security monitor.

“Someone entered the building.”

“Who?”

He zoomed in.

A black SUV.

Then another.

My grandfather's expression changed.

“Margaret.”

I stared.

“She escaped?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Someone else.”

The camera switched.

A man stepped out.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

I recognized him.

Richard Vance.

My grandfather's face hardened.

“Impossible.”

Richard looked directly into the camera.

Then smiled.

He lifted a phone.

The screen connected.

His face appeared on the monitor.

“Hello, Richard.”

My grandfather stared.

“You should be dead.”

Richard laughed.

“You should know better than anyone.”

I stepped forward.

“Richard.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“Mabel.”

“You took Clara.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“I did.”

I felt cold.

“You just said you didn't.”

“I said I didn't personally.”

“Where is she?”

Richard smiled.

“Safe.”

“Give her back.”

“I will.”

“When?”

“When you give me the drive.”

I tightened my grip.

“You want Meridian.”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

He looked at me.

“I want what your father stole from me.”

“What?”

“Your mother.”

Eleanor froze.

Richard's expression changed.

“Twenty-three years ago, Richard Hart took Eleanor away from me.”

I looked at my mother.

“He loved her.”

Richard laughed.

“He stole her.”

Eleanor stepped forward.

“You never loved me.”

Richard's smile vanished.

“I loved you enough to destroy everyone who stood between us.”

I felt sick.

“Where is Clara?”

Richard looked at me.

“She's with someone you trust.”

“Who?”

He smiled.

Then the monitor changed.

A live video appeared.

Clara was sitting in a room.

Beside her stood Jonathan.

My blood froze.

Jonathan looked into the camera.

And said:

“I'm sorry, Mabel.”

The screen went black.

I stared.

Jonathan.

The man who had protected my father's secrets.

The man I had trusted.

The man who had warned me about Flynn.

He was standing beside my daughter.

And Richard had just called him—

one of my trusted people.

My grandfather turned toward me.

“Now you know.”

I looked at him.

“Know what?”

“That the person who betrayed your father…”

He pointed toward the dark monitor.

“…has been protecting you for twenty years.”

I couldn't breathe.

“Jonathan?”

My grandfather nodded.

“And tomorrow, Mabel…”

He looked at the countdown.

May you like

59:47:18

“…he is going to tell you why.”
